SO MANY magical things happened today!!! First, the driveway was paved. It's a small thing...well...not really - I mean, I wish I could say I have working showers, stoves, and a livable master bedroom, but just look at what this crew did for our property! Michael Luizzi Contracting Corp was AMAZING. Professional, courteous, knowledgeable - from their youngest crew members to the owner. (I LOVE any organization that hires people who will answer Finn's countless questions about their machines and materials - not to mention doing an incredible job.)

Now: Now there's a kind of pea stone/sand mixture. They also leveled out a parking spot on the right side of the driveway.

Oh! When the Luizzi guys were clearing out the garage, we encountered a groundhog. I didn't get my phone in time, so this is stock photo. The one in the garage was super cute and the crew was great about directing the guy safely out of the garage and into the woods.

Disclaimer - they emailed the day before AND texted - but my life has been so crazy, I missed both. Also, if you don't know, the Puccio's bought the house in 1979 and did major renovations. They came with all kinds of gifts - architect plans, books, pictures from the past and STORIES.

It was WONDERFUL walking around the house and grounds with people who put so much love and thought into this old, old house. I know we will bring our own touch to the Butter Firkin, but I love having pieces of the past to refer to and learn from.

We learned that the little barn on the property was used as a corn crib at one time. Also, it housed possibly hundreds of bats at one point. I shamelessly took the corn crib info from Wikipedia - it's basically a librarian sacrilege - forgive me.

This information confirms the information given to me by the great, great granddaughter of the house's original owner. In her email, she told me both her grandfather and great uncle were born in the house!

She also shared a wonderful story about the barn. Her grandfather would tell her about the Blizzard of 1888 and how the snow was over his head (he was six at the time) and he had to dig his way to the barn and feed the animals.

Guys - this is INCREDIBLE. BUT, other magical things happened today and I still want to sort through all the information I am getting before I write it down.

So, this also happened. Everyone helped. The kids have begged for years...and there was a dangerous, broken one on the property they kept playing on. When you are spending your summer up to your elbows in bleach, you make yourself feel better by spending money you don't really have on a trampoline...because this is America, people! It's what we do. Also...they're so happy...

Um...no, Cookie did not help. In fact, she SLEPT right next to us as we built the trampoline in the humid, sticky evening sun. Photo creds to Finn on this one.

Look at my little pool...yesterday it was so hot and humid, the boys and I went to the creek and played...shaped this little dam. I literally spent every summer doing this in the mountain creek behind my Mormor's house in Norway with my brother, Chuckie.

My boys weren't that impressed, but I was filled with joy with this simple act. They couldn't understand why I was so happy throwing rocks around a creek...but there's nothing quite like getting in touch with your inner child.
