"Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?"
— Matthew 24:45
The First and Second Epistles to the Corinthians were written to a church greatly blessed with spiritual gifts, yet troubled by divisions, carnality, false teachings, moral compromise, disorder in worship, and a misunderstanding of the gospel. Although written nearly two thousand years ago, these inspired letters contain timely instruction for God's remnant church living immediately before the close of probation.
The apostle Paul reminds us that these experiences were preserved especially for the last generation:
"Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come."
(1 Corinthians 10:11)
Likewise, he exhorts believers:
"Study to shew thyself approved unto God... rightly dividing the word of truth."
(2 Timothy 2:15)
The prophet Isaiah foresaw that God's people would be nourished by increasing spiritual light:
"Whom shall He teach knowledge?... them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts... For precept must be upon precept, line upon line... here a little, and there a little."
(Isaiah 28:9–10)
The apostle Paul also distinguishes between elementary instruction and deeper spiritual understanding:
"For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness... But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age."
(Hebrews 5:13–14)
This commentary therefore seeks to present not merely devotional thoughts but "meat in due season"—a careful comparison of Scripture with Scripture, illuminated by the prophetic gift and God's unfolding present truth for the final generation.
The foundation of every lesson in this commentary is the Holy Scriptures.
"To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them."
(Isaiah 8:20)
"Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy word is truth."
(John 17:17)
"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine..."
(2 Timothy 3:16–17)
Every prophetic insight presented herein must harmonize completely with the Bible, for the Scriptures alone remain the final standard of faith and doctrine.
God promised that the prophetic gift would continue in His remnant church.
"The dragon... went to make war with the remnant... which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ."
(Revelation 12:17)
"The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy."
(Revelation 19:10)
Ellen G. White clearly defined the role of her writings:
"Little heed is given to the Bible, and the Lord has given a lesser light to lead men and women to the greater light."
— Colporteur Ministry, p. 125.
She also warned against assuming that God has revealed all available truth:
"There is no excuse for anyone in taking the position that there is no more truth to be revealed... We have many lessons to learn, and many, many to unlearn."
— Counsels to Writers and Editors, pp. 35–37.
Again she wrote:
"Whenever the people of God are growing in grace, they will be constantly obtaining a clearer understanding of His word."
— Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 5, p. 706.
Therefore, every generation must continue searching the Scriptures with humility, allowing God to reveal additional light while never contradicting truths already established.
Peter wrote:
"I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth."
(2 Peter 1:12)
The Shepherd's Rod message repeatedly emphasizes that God has always sent present truth to meet the needs of His people in each generation.
Victor T. Houteff wrote:
"Present Truth is just as important as ever was Present Truth. The truth that saves today is present truth."
— The Shepherd's Rod, Vol. 1, p. 32.
Again he explains:
"Truth is progressive. The path of the just is as a shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day."
— The Shepherd's Rod, Vol. 1 (see discussion on Proverbs 4:18).
Speaking of the purpose of the Rod message, Houteff states:
"The primary purpose of The Shepherd's Rod message is to effect the sealing of the servants of God—to call for revival and reformation among God's people."
— The Shepherd's Rod, Vol. 1; see also Testimony to the Laodiceans.
These statements emphasize that God's last-day message is designed not to replace Scripture, but to awaken the church to deeper repentance, revival, reformation, and preparation for the sealing work foretold in Ezekiel 9 and Revelation 7.
This commentary is therefore designed to examine every Sabbath School lesson from four complementary perspectives:
Biblical Exposition — careful verse-by-verse study of Scripture.
Spirit of Prophecy Commentary — inspired counsel from Ellen G. White that magnifies biblical truth.
Prophetic Insights from the Shepherd's Rod — present-truth applications relating to the purification of the church, the Loud Cry, the sealing of the 144,000, and the establishment of God's Kingdom.
Practical Christian Experience — applying these truths personally through repentance, sanctification, faithful service, and preparation for Christ's soon-coming kingdom.
As we journey through First and Second Corinthians, we shall discover that Paul's counsel to the Corinthian church is equally applicable to the final remnant church. The same Christ who corrected Corinth is still calling His people today to unity, holiness, orderly worship, faithfulness in stewardship, spiritual maturity, and unwavering loyalty to His truth.
May the Holy Spirit, the Author of all Scripture, guide every reader into a fuller understanding of God's Word and prepare us to receive the promised blessing upon those who faithfully receive His "meat in due season."
"Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing."
(Matthew 24:46)
