14. All Things New (1Pet. 1:13-25)

Sabbath afternoon

Prayer Thought

In the prophetic words, "Behold, I make all things new" (Rev. 21:5), God warns that "all things" shall wax old. To understand correctly this prophecy, we must bear in mind the fact that for an old thing to be made new, it must first be disintegrated, -- reduced to the state of its component elements or parts in which it existed before they were integrated into a composite whole, -- then renovated, reprocessed, and finally reintegrated. While such a process, moreover, is in operation, the thing being renewed thereby cannot, of course, until finished, resume its function. During the period of renewal, it is out of commission and out of use. {TN9: 3.1}

Christ’s plan is the only safe one. He declares, “Behold, I make all things new.” Revelation 21:5. “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature.” 2 Corinthians 5:17. The Saviour gives no encouragement to any to think that He will accept a patchwork religion. Such a religion is of no value in His sight. There may at first seem to be some of self and some of Christ; but it soon seen that there is none of Christ. The patches of selfishness increase till the entire garment is covered with them. . . . {OFC 113.6}

A religion formed after the divine pattern is the only one that will endure. Only by striving to live the life of Christ here can we prepare ourselves to live with Him through the eternal ages. {OFC 113.7}

Memory Text

And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. {Revelation 21:5}

Sunday: God will Make All Things New - A New Heavens and a New Earth

Isa. 65:17-25; 66:22, 23; 2 Pet 3:13; Rev. 21:1-5; 1 Pet. 2:9; Matt. 28:18-20; Heb. 11:14-16

“For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; And the former shall not be remembered or come to mind.” (Isaiah 65:17)

That God will Make All Things New

The earth, restored to its pristine beauty, will become forever the abode of the saints of the Lord. The promise to Abraham, that through Christ he and his seed should possess the earth throughout the endless ages of eternity, will be fulfilled. The kingdom and dominion and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven will be given to the people of the saints of the Most High whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey Him. Christ, the Lord, will reign supreme and every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth, and such as are in the sea will ascribe blessing and honor and glory and power unto Him that sitteth upon the throne and unto the Lamb forever and ever. Gen. 13:14-17; Rom. 4:13; Heb. 11:8-16; Matt. 5:5; Isa. 35; Rev. 21:1-7; Dan. 7:27; Rev. 5:13." -- Year Book of the Seventh-day Adventist Denomination, 1940 Edition, pp. 5-8. {FB: 11.1}

The Inception of a Little Season - after a Thousand Years (Isa. 65:20 - Hundred years)

Accordingly, the scripture, "Behold, I make all things new," foreshadows a period of disintegration and renovation of all things -- a time in which Satan is bound as predicted in the prophecies concerning THE MILLENNIUM.

Since the doctrine of the millennium presents several vexed and mooted questions of vital importance to the salvation of every human being, and since the truth alone will set the soul free from deception and sin, and sanctify the heart, the need is imperative, therefore, that we discover the correct answer to every such question.

In his key vision, embracing the millennium, John "saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, and cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that, he must be loosed a little season. {TN9: 4.1-2}

The First Earth, the First heaven pass away and Replace with New One

Since the prophets and the Revelator, too, saw the first earth and the first heaven pass away and new ones replace them, anyone would be as foolish as he would be dishonest to gainsay and oppose this plain truth, thereby deceiving himself and confusing others. So the need is very urgent that all give careful consideration to the ensuing Further Reasons. {TN9: 20.2}

Were the earth not to be laid waste at the beginning of the millennium, what need would there be of making "all things new"? Rev. 21:5. If, furthermore, during the millennial age the saints were not to dwell in heaven, then there would be no need of having the "new Jerusalem" (Rev. 21:2, 10) there. And if, still further, the saints then live on earth, the Voice of Prophecy would not say they lived "with Christ," but rather that Christ lived with them. And finally, if they reign with Him on earth, where they are to live forever, prophecy would not say that they "reigned with Christ a thousand years," but rather that they reigned with Him forever. {TN9: 20.3}

Consider the Following

In heaven the redeemed shall reign with Christ only a thousand years, whereas on earth He shall reign with them forever and ever: for "the heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord's: but the earth hath He given to the children of men." Ps. 115:16. "For thus saith the Lord that created the heavens; God Himself that formed the earth and made it; He hath established it, He created it not in vain, He formed it to be inhabited: I am the Lord; and there is none else." Isa. 45: 18. {TN9: 21.2}

Isaiah 65:17-25 and 66:22-23 show God’s plan to gradually eradicate sin. Eventually, humans will live in a sinless world.

Israel was meant to carry out God’s plan. They should’ve accepted the Messiah (Jesus of Nazareth) and be a light leading the entire world to God (Isaiah 11:6-12; 60:1-5). Then, nature would’ve gradually changed until being fully transformed.

However, Israel didn’t carry out their part. God’s promises were transferred to the Church and the plan was adapted.

Monday: Worship will be Perfect - In the Temple of God

Rev. 4:2-6; 5:13; 7:9-15; 15:5-8; 21:3, 22; Jer. 32:38; Ezek. 37:27; Zech. 8:8; Heb. 8:10

“He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God,” (Revelation 3:12)

Perfect Worship must Starts on Earth

"In His temple doth everyone speaks of His glory" (Psalm 29:9), and the song which the ransomed ones will sing--the song of their experience--will declare the glory of God: "Great and marvelous are Thy works, O Lord God, the Almighty; righteous and true are Thy ways, Thou King of the ages. Who shall not fear, O Lord, and glorify Thy name? for Thou only art holy." Revelation 15:3, 4, R.V. {Ed 308.5}

In our life here, earthly, sin-restricted though it is, the greatest joy and the highest education are in service. And in the future state, untrammeled by the limitations of sinful humanity, it is in service that our greatest joy and our highest education will be found--witnessing, and ever as we witness learning anew "the riches of the glory of this mystery;" "which is Christ in you, the hope of glory." Colossians 1:27. {Ed 309.1}

Sabbath Worship Originated in the Garden of Eden and It will be Restored

The sacrifice and religious worship of the two first born in the human family, reveals that the Saviour of the world had made known the divine plan of salvation to the family of Adam. Their system of worship being devised by the Creator Himself, was perfect, and able to save the sinner from his sin. Abel's careful religious observance, according to the instruction of the Diety whom he worshipped, shows that only such worship, honor and praise, can be acceptable to God.

The Sabbath originated in the garden of God. "And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had made; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made. And God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it: because that in it He had rested from all His work which God created and made." (Genesis 2:2, 3.) {SR2: 143.2}

God is Perfect and those who Worship Him must be Perfect

Selfishness has brought discord into the church, filling it with unholy ambition. . . . Selfishness destroys Christlikeness, filling man with self-love. It leads to continual departure from righteousness. Christ says, "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." But self-love is blind to the perfection which God requires. . . . {CS 24.3}

God gave rules of order, perfect and exact, to His ancient people.

  1. Has His character changed?

  2. Is He not the great and mighty God who rules in the heaven of heavens?

  3. Would it not be well for us often to read the directions given by God Himself to the Hebrews, that we who have the light of the glorious truth shining upon us may imitate their reverence for the house of God?

We have abundant reason to maintain a fervent, devoted spirit in the worship of God. We have reason even to be more thoughtful and reverential in our worship than had the Jews. But an enemy has been at work to destroy our faith in the sacredness of Christian worship. {5T 495.2}

His People (Church/ Kingdom) must be Glorious as they Glorified God Amidst them

God's Ideal for His Church - That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. Ephesians 5:27. {FLB 288.1}

And the nearer the people of God can approach to correct, harmonious singing, the more is He glorified, the church benefited, and unbelievers favorably affected. --Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 146. (1857) {Ev 508.2}

In Christ is gathered all the glory of the Father. In Him is all the fulness of the Godhead. He is the brightness of the Father's glory and the express image of His person. The glory of the attributes of God are expressed in His character. Every page of the New Testament Scriptures shines with His light. Every text is a diamond, touched and irradiated by the divine rays. The Gospel is Christ unfolded, and Christ is the Gospel embodied. We are not to worship the Gospel, but Christ, the Lord of the Gospel. The Gospel is glorious because it is made up of Christ's righteousness. Our Saviour is a perfect representation of God on the one hand, and a perfect representation of humanity on the other. Thus He has combined divinity and humanity. {ST, November 24, 1898 par. 1}

Consider the Following

From the sacredness that was attached to the earthly sanctuary among the children of Israel, Christians may learn how they should regard the place where the Lord meets with his people. God himself gave rules of order, perfect and exact, to be observed in his worship. But there has been a change, not for the better but for the worse, in habits in reference to religious worship. The spirit of reverence has largely passed away. {YI, October 8, 1896 par. 3}

Both in Israel’s time and nowadays, people worship God “in spirit” in places of worship, without Him being physically present (1 Kings 8:27-30; John 4:23-24).

This will be different in the New Earth. The redeemed will serve God in His temple, in the physical presence of the Lamb, Jesus (Revelation 7:15-17). Moreover, they will be “columns” of the temple, living in the New Jerusalem by the throne of God (Revelation 3:12; 22:3).

However, there’s no temple in the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:22). The presence of God makes the city itself a temple where we’ll worship God in His presence (Revelation 21:1-3). We will praise Jesus our Redeemer forever (Revelation 7:9-10; 5:13).

Tuesday: We will see God - In the Presence of God

1 Tim 6:16; John 1:18; 1 John 4:12; Matt. 5:8; 1 John 3:2, 3; Rev. 22:3, 4; John 1:18; 1 John 4:12; 1 John 3:2, 3; Rev. 22:3, 4; Matt. 5:8; 1 Cor. 13:12; 1 John 3:3; 1 Pet. 1;22

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” (Matthew 5:8)

The Necessity of Body-cleansing and heart-changing Experience Before Seeing God Face to Face

When does this take place? -- After God takes His saints "from among the heathen," "out of all countries," and brings them into their "own land," say the Scriptures. Thus shall they dwell in the land that God anciently gave to their fathers, and thus shall they be His people and He their God. Here you see that no one can meet God face to face and live with Him eternally without first having this body-cleansing and heart-changing experience. {2TG44: 45.3}

If we will come to God just as we are, and pray to Him in faith as did Daniel, we shall see of the salvation of God. We need to pray as we never prayed before.—Letter 59, 1896 (Manuscript Releases, vol. 18, pp. 14-16). {CTr 334.6}

In the varied gifts of God in nature we see but the faintest gleaming of his glory. It is written, "Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him." [1 Corinthians 2:9.] {CE 55.2}

We Shall See His Grace and Salvation - the Kingdom Established on Earth

The Lord is coming very soon, and we are entering into scenes of calamity. Satanic agencies, though unseen, are working to destroy human life. But if our life is hid with Christ in God, we shall see of His grace and salvation. Christ is coming to establish His kingdom on the earth. Let our tongues be sanctified and used to glorify Him. Let us work now as we have never worked before. We are exhorted to “be instant in season, out of season.” 2 Timothy 4:2. We are to make openings for the presentation of the truth. We are to improve every opportunity of drawing souls to Christ. {CEv 101.3}

Consider the Following

No one can see God because of sin (1 John 4:12; John 1:18). However, we’ve been promised that we will see God face to face once sin is removed (Revelation 22:4).

Both Jesus and John encouraged us to have a clean heart and purify ourselves because we will see God (Matthew 5:8; 1 John 3:2-3).

We must obey God’s Word today, letting the Holy Spirit lead us and mold us (Romans 8:1, 14; 2 Corinthians 3:18).

Wednesday: There will be no more Tears - No More Death and Tears

Isa. 25:8; Rev. 7:17; 21:1-5; 1 Cor. 15:54, 55; Isa. 65:17

“And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” (Revelation 21:4)

Victory had been Attained by Christ, SO His People Be

"He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of His people shall He take away from off all the earth: for the Lord hath spoken it. And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He will save us: this is the Lord; we have waited for Him, we will be glad and rejoice in His salvation." (Isa. 25:8, 9.)

God's Glory will be wrought amidst His Pure Church

Therefore, in the time of the "Loud Cry," miracles are wrought -- the sick will be healed, the eyes of the blind shall be opened, the deaf shall hear, the tongue of the dumb loosed, and the lame shall leap for joy! What a glorious sight! Those who have never seen light, to behold the glory of the Lord! They who have never heard a sound, now listening to the glorious melodies of the angels' harps, and the singing of the saints! What a thrill! What bliss! "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away." (Rev. 21:4.) {SR2: 263.1}

Living Saints Witness a Glorious Resurrection of the Dead Saints of All Ages

As the living saints witness the dead of all ages rising from their dusty beds, it will bring joy indescribable. Then to behold friends and loved ones as they meet each other, clothed in glorious incorruptible bodies, marching through space via sinless planets, and finally into the Heaven of Heavens! What a glorious train of immortal beings -- saints and angels, and the King of kings, the Lord of lords, "the everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace," in the midst of them! Swiftly flying from the sin-cursed earth to the Center of centers in but "seven" days, while it would take "light" millions of years to make a trip of such incomprehensible distance! Can you perceive of an object moving with such tremendous velocity? God forbid that we should rob ourselves of glory like this. An hour's time lived in heaven, without sin, pain or tears, fear or death is worth more than a thousand years in tents of wickedness. {SR2: 263.3}

Makes Jerusalem a Praise in the Earth

"Therefore, are they before the throne of God and serve Him day and night in His temple: and He that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sunlight on them, nor any heat. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes." Rev. 7:15-17.

Even now, says the Lord, "I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their Peace Day nor night: ye that make mention of the Lord, keep not silence, and give Him no rest, till He establishes, and till He makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth. {1TG28: 18.1-2}

Consider the Following

Pain cannot exist in the atmosphere of Heaven - His Everlasting Kingdom established in the days of these kings (Dan. 2:44) Typologically speaking, There will be no more tears, no funeral trains, no badges of mourning. “There shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, . . . for the former things are passed away.” [Revelation 21:4, 11, 24, 3.] “The inhabitant shall not say, I am sick; the people that dwell therein shall be forgiven their iniquity.” [Isaiah 11:6, 9; 33:24; 62:3; 65:19.] {GC88 676.1}

God cares about our sufferings and tears. He’s willing to comfort us (Psalm 56:8; 116:8). However, some tears will not be wiped in this life, but in the future (Revelation 21:4).

The tears for our loved beings will be wiped at the resurrection.

The tears for injustice and everything we don’t currently understand will be wiped at God’s judgment during the millennium.

Finally, “The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind.” (Isaiah 65:17)

A Heavenly Atmosphere

THE CHRISTIAN’S SUMMER.—This earth is the place of preparation for heaven. The time spent here is the Christian’s winter. Here the chilly winds of affliction blow upon us, and the waves of trouble roll against us. But in the near future, when Christ comes, sorrow and sighing will be forever ended. Then will be the Christian’s summer. All trials will be over, and there will be no more sickness or death. “God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying . . . : for the former things are passed away.”Ms 28, 1886 quoted in 7BC 988. {Hvn 60.1}

Thursday: We will be There - His Name on Their Foreheads

Rev. 22:3-5; Eph 1:3, 4; 2 Tim. 1:9; Titus 1:2; Rev. 13:8; Rom. 4:2, 3

“And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads.” (Revelation 22:3-4)

The 11th Hour Servants of God

Thousands Converted in a Day - Thousands in the eleventh hour will see and acknowledge the truth. . . . These conversions to truth will be made with a rapidity that will surprise the church, and God's name alone will be glorified.--2SM 16 (1890). {LDE 212.1}

There will be thousands converted to the truth in a day who at the eleventh hour see and acknowledge the truth and the movements of the Spirit of God.--EGW'88 755 (1890). {LDE 212.2}

The time is coming when there will be as many converted in a day as there were on the Day of Pentecost after the disciples had received the Holy Spirit.--Ev 692 (1905). {LDE 212.3}

"The tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God." Revelation 21:3. {Ed 302.4}

"These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve Him day and night in His temple. . . . They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters." Revelation 7:14-17.

"Now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:" now we know in part; but then shall we know even as also we are known. 1 Corinthians 13:12.

"They shall see His face; and His name shall be in their foreheads." Revelation 22:4. {Ed 303.1-3}

There, when the veil that darkens our vision shall be removed, and our eyes shall behold that world of beauty of which we now catch glimpses through the microscope; when we look on the glories of the heavens, now scanned afar through the telescope; when, the blight of sin removed, the whole earth shall appear in "the beauty of the Lord our God," what a field will be open to our study! There the student of science may read the records of creation and discern no reminders of the law of evil. He may listen to the music of nature's voices and detect no note of wailing or undertone of sorrow. In all created things he may trace one handwriting--in the vast universe behold "God's name writ large," and not in earth or sea or sky one sign of ill remaining. {Ed 303.4}

There the Eden life will be lived, the life in garden and field. "They shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them. They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree are the days of My people, and Mine elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands." Isaiah 65:21, 22. {Ed 303.5}

There shall be nothing to "hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain, saith the Lord." Isaiah 65:25. There man will be restored to his lost kingship, and the lower order of beings will again recognize his sway; the fierce will become gentle, and the timid trustful. {Ed 304.1}

Consider the Following

“His name shall be on their foreheads” (Revelation 22:4) means that we will have the character of Jesus. Is that a requirement to be in the New Earth? Will we ever have it?

God promised a solution when Adam and Eve sinned. He used the sacrificial system to teach Israel that sin can be removed only by the death of the Innocent: the Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth.

He has done everything necessary to forgive us and transform us. We just have to accept Him by faith (Romans 5:1-2). If we do, we will be there!

Life on Earth is the Beginning of the Life in Heaven

"His servants shall serve Him." Revelation 22:3. The life on earth is the beginning of the life in heaven; education on earth is an initiation into the principles of heaven; the lifework here is a training for the lifework there. What we now are, in character and holy service, is the sure foreshadowing of what we shall be. {Ed 307.6}

"The Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister." Matthew 20:28. Christ's work below is His work above, and our reward for working with Him in this world will be the greater power and wider privilege of working with Him in the world to come. {Ed 308.1}

Friday: Further Study and Meditation

For what was the great controversy permitted to continue throughout the ages? Why was it that Satan's existence was not cut short at the outset of his rebellion? It was that the universe might be convinced of God's justice in His dealing with evil; that sin might receive eternal condemnation. In the plan of redemption there are heights and depths that eternity itself can never exhaust, marvels into which the angels desire to look. The redeemed only, of all created beings, have in their own experience known the actual conflict with sin; they have wrought with Christ, and, as even the angels could not do, have entered into the fellowship of His sufferings; will they have no testimony as to the science of redemption --nothing that will be of worth to unfallen beings? {Ed 308.3}

Even now, "unto the principalities and the powers in the heavenly places" is "made known through the church the manifold wisdom of God." And He "hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places: . . . that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us through Christ Jesus." Ephesians 3:10, R.V.; 2:6, 7. {Ed 308.4}

Questions to Ponder

1. Would it be possible that eternal life could be attained on earth as it was promised? When will it be fulfilled?

2. Why is it that God’s eternal kingdom should start in the days of these kings (Dan. 2:44, 45, 35)? Why have most of us SDAs misunderstood its establishment?

3. What’s the purpose of the Sanctuary in relation to the plan of salvation?

4. To whom does all the ancient promises in the Holy Writ will be accomplished? (PK 713, 19, 22). When will the perfect peace be realized?

5. What was the sole objective of obedience and purification in the church? Does it relate to the experience of God’s people in seeing God face to face?

6. When will the name of God be written in God’s people's foreheads? Is it an instant experience or a progressive one? Explain?

7. Based on the above statement, {Ed 308.3-4}, How do these passages relate to our experiences and the conflict that is going on with the SDA church? In what way that this truth will wake us from spiritual slumber?

From the Pen of Inspiration

“The great controversy is ended. Sin and sinners are no more. The entire universe is clean. One pulse of harmony and gladness beats through the vast creation. From Him who created all, flow life and light and gladness, throughout the realms of illimitable space. From the minutest atom to the greatest world, all things, animate and inanimate, in their unshadowed beauty and perfect joy, declare that God is love.” E. G. W. (The Great Controversy, cp. 42, p. 678)
