Sabbath Afternoon - January 13, 2024

Scripture Reading for the Week:
Psalms 8:1-9; 100:1-5; 97:1-12; 75:1-10; 105:7; 25:10; Galatians 3:26-29.

Thought for Meditation:
Transformation of character is to be the testimony to the world of the indwelling love of Christ. The Lord expects His people to show that the redeeming power of grace can work upon the faulty character and cause it to develop in symmetry and abundant fruitfulness. . . .  {AG 238.4}

When the grace of God reigns within, the soul will be surrounded with an atmosphere of faith and courage and Christlike love, an atmosphere invigorating to the spiritual life of all who inhale it. . . . Those who are humble in heart the Lord will use to reach souls whom the ordained ministers cannot approach. They will be moved to speak words which reveal the saving grace of Christ.  {AG 238.5}

And in blessing others they will themselves be blessed. God gives us the opportunity to impart grace, that He may refill us with increased grace. Hope and faith will strengthen as the agent for God works with the talents and facilities that God has provided. He will have a divine agency to work with him.  {AG 238.6}

Memory Text:

“The Lord reigns, he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength; indeed, the world is established, firm and secure” (Psalms 93:1).

This week's SSLesson will trace the origin of all things and describe how God will reign as the Creator and Redeemer. This includes the intrinsic relationship of the Lord to His created beings through His everlasting covenant.

Sunday - January 14, 2024

The Lord Has Made Us - The Creator (Ps. 8, 100)

Psalms 8:1-9; 100:1-5; 19:1; 97:6; 93:2; 102:25−27; 115:4115:7; 95:4-5; 29:1-11; 93:1-5; 104:1-35; 95:7; 147:4−9.

“When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained”    (Psalm 8:3)

The Depositories of His Law

The Lord has made us the depositaries of His law; He has committed to us sacred and eternal truth, which is to be given to others in faithful warnings, reproofs, and encouragement.--5T 381 (1885).  {LDE 45.1}

God had Made us Differ from One Another

Angels are waiting to see if we embrace opportunities within our reach of doing good--waiting to see if we will bless others, that they in their turn may bless us. The Lord Himself has made us to differ--some poor, some rich, some afflicted--that all may have an opportunity to develop character. The poor are purposely permitted to be thus of God, that we may be tested and proved and develop what is in our hearts.  {AH 447.2}

When the spirit of hospitality dies, the heart becomes palsied with selfishness.  {AH 447.3}

He has Made Us Stewards

So the Lord has imparted to us heaven's richest treasure in giving us, Jesus. With Him, He has given us all things richly to enjoy. The productions of the earth, the bountiful harvests, and the treasures of gold and silver are His gifts. Houses and lands, food and clothing, He has placed in the possession of men. He asks us to acknowledge Him as the Giver of all things; and for this reason, He says, Of all your possessions I reserve a tenth for Myself, besides gifts and offerings, which are to be brought into My storehouse. This is the provision God has made for carrying forward the work of the gospel. {CS 65.4}

He Entrusted His Property to Us for Investment

But not so does God regard the matter. The ability to write a book is, like every other talent, a gift from Him, for the improvement of which the possessor is accountable to God; and he is to invest the returns under His direction. Let it be borne in mind that it is not our own property which is entrusted to us for investment. If it were, we might claim discretionary power; we might shift our responsibility upon others, and leave our stewardship with them. But this cannot be, because the Lord has made us individually His stewards. We are responsible to invest this means ourselves. Our own hearts are to be sanctified; our hands are to have something to impart, as occasion demands, of the income that God entrusts to us.  {CW 163.3}

He Made Us Example of Faith, Confidence, and Love

Let us never forget that Jesus loves us. He died for us, and now he lives to make intercession in our behalf. And the Father also loves us, and desires our happiness. “He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?” [Romans 8:32.] Brethren, you should set an example of faith, confidence, and love, to the churches over which the Lord has made you overseers. Will you do your work with fidelity, in the fear of God? Will you feel that you must avail yourselves of every opportunity to obtain grace and power from on high, that you may render to God the very best service possible?  {GW92 423.2}

Consider the Following

Why is God the Lord of the entire Earth?

— He already existed before the Earth existed: “you have always existed” (Ps. 93:2)

— He will continue to exist when this Earth disappears (Ps. 102:25-27)

— He is superior to any god of the nations, who are human inventions (Ps. 115:2-4)

— Creation itself declares the glory of God (Ps. 8:1; 19:1)

— He has power over nature (Ps. 29:5-8)

— The world belongs to God, because He created it (Ps. 89:11)

Looking around us, we can think that humanity is great, that it has done great feats and wonders. But the psalmist confidently declares: “Know that the Lord is God; He made us, and not we ourselves” (Ps. 100:3).

❖ We are mere stewards of what God has created (Ps. 8:5-9). He alone deserves our supreme worship and loyalty.

The Lord Reigns - The King (Ps. 97)

Psalms 96:10; 97:1; 99:1; 45:6; 93:1-2; 103:19; 104:1; 97:1-12; 96:10; 97:1; 99:1; 145:11-13; 98:3; 99:4; 103:20; 148:1-14; 14:1; 74:3−22; 68:21; 73:17−20; Matthew 12:26; 1 Corinthians 15:20-28.

“The Lord reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof” (Psalm 97:1)

System and Order: Manifestation of God's Work

Light was given by His Spirit that there must be order and thorough discipline in the church--that organization was essential. System and order are manifest in all the works of God throughout the universe. Order is the law of heaven, and it should be the law of God's people on the earth.--TM 26 (1902).  {LDE 46.2}

Strengthening the Bonds of Unity

The Lord has made us His almoners. He places in our hands His gifts, so that we shall divide with those who are needy, and it is this practical giving that will be to us a sure panacea for all selfishness. By thus expressing love to those who need help, you will cause the hearts of the needy to give thanksgiving unto God because He has bestowed the grace of benevolence upon the brethren, and has caused them to relieve the necessities of the needy. {CS 343.3}

Our will has not Coincided with God’s Will

Jesus says of these, “I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one [this unity brings perfection of character]; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me” (John 17:23).  {Hvn 85.2}

The Lord has made every provision whereby man may have full and free salvation, and be complete in Him. God designs that His children shall have the bright beams of the Sun of Righteousness, that all may have the light of truth. God has provided salvation for the world at infinite cost, even through the gift of His only-begotten Son. The apostle asks, “He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?” (Romans 8:32). Then if we are not saved, the fault will not be on the part of God, but on our part, that we have failed to cooperate with the divine agencies. Our will has not coincided with God’s will.—RH November 1, 1892 quoted in 1SM 375.  {Hvn 85.3}

Consider the Following

Psalms shows God as a king clothed in honor, majesty, and strength (Ps. 93:1), covered with light (Ps. 104:2). According to Psalms, why is God proclaimed King?

— Because He is Creator (Ps. 149:2)

— Because He is Savior (Ps. 74:12)

— Because he establishes the world (Ps. 96:10)

— Because he is merciful (Ps. 98:3)

— Because it is right (Ps. 97:2)

— Because it unites Heaven and Earth in praise (Ps. 148)

His followers do delight in his righteous judgments (Ps. 97:8, 12). By faith, God's people rejoice in the establishment of God's Kingdom through the redemptive ministry of Christ and look forward to the consummation of the Kingdom (Dan. 2:44).

God is the Judge (Ps. 75)

Psalms 75:1-10; 99:7; 98:9; 97:2; 75:8; 96:13; 75:1-10; 75:8; 14:2; 146:9; 149:4; 50:4; 135:14; 7:8; 139:23-24; 67:4; 96:10; 98:4−9.Jeremiah 25:15; Revelation 14:10; 1 Corinthians 15:23−26; Genesis 6:5,8; Deuteronomy 32:36; 1 Peter 4:17

“You say, “I choose the appointed time, it is I who judge with equity” (Psalm 75:2)

The Judge who Weighs Action, and Unveils the Conscience

The heart not given entirely to the control of Jesus Christ has a door open for Satan to enter, and the archdeceiver weaves about the soul ingenious apologies in performing its hidden purposes of evil. All these excuses and pretensions are seen of God, and are as spiderwebs in the eyes of Him who never slumbers or sleeps. Oh, how readily will the human soul find poor and wretched excuses to deceive and cover up its own course of evil, which it pursues. There is an exact judge who weigheth actions. He cannot be deceived, neither can He be mocked. He will one day strike off the covering, unveil the conscience, and sweep away these excuses as smoke. {CTr 171.3}

God will Avenge His Elect

"And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith. And shall not God avenge His elect, which cry day and night unto him, though He bear long with them? I tell you that He will avenge them speedily." Christ here draws a sharp contrast between the unjust judge and God. The judge yielded to the widow's request merely through selfishness, that he might be relieved of her importunity. He felt for her no pity or compassion; her misery was nothing to him. How different is the attitude of God toward those who seek Him? The appeals of the needy and distressed are considered by Him with infinite compassion.  {COL 165.1}

Not to Judge or Rule

It is dangerous work to invest men with authority to judge and rule their fellow men.  Not to you nor any other man has been given the power to control the actions of God's people, and the effort to do this must be no longer continued . . . . God has been dishonored by the education that has been given to the churches in Southern California in looking to one man as conscience and judgment for them.  God has never authorized any man to exercise a ruling power over his fellow workers, and those who have allowed a dictatorial spirit to come into their official work need to experience the converting power of God upon their hearts.  They have placed man where God should be.--Letter 290, 1907, pp. 2, 3 (Aug. 29, 1907). {ChL 33.4}

Realization Greater Than Expectation

Christ accepted humanity, and lived on this earth a pure, sanctified life. For this reason He has received the appointment of judge. He who occupies the position of judge is God manifest in the flesh. What a joy it will be to recognize in Him our Teacher and Redeemer, bearing still the marks of the crucifixion, from which shine beams of glory, giving additional value to the crowns which the redeemed receive from His hands, the very hands outstretched in blessing over His disciples as He ascended. The very voice which said, "Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world," bids His ransomed ones welcome to His presence.  {CS 349.1}

Consider the Following

As sovereign King, God is also Lawgiver and Judge (Ps. 99:7; 7:11). Psalm 75 vividly describes the work of the Judge and the process and culmination of his judgment:

— The Judge has appointed a time when he will begin to judge (Ps. 75:2)

— Judgment will be held and executed before humanity itself destroys the Earth (Ps.75:3)

— Before judging each case, God warns and gives opportunity to the wicked to repent (Ps. 75:4-7)

— At the end of the judgment, God will pour out the plagues of the cup of wrath, full of mixed wine, on the wicked (Ps. 75:8)

— At that time, there will be a faithful remnant on Earth who will praise God (Ps. 75:9)

— Finally, all unrepentant sinners will be destroyed forever; and the righteous will live forever (Ps. 75:10)

Why, before speaking of judgment, does the psalmist give thanks to God (Ps. 75:1)?

For we who trust in the love of God have nothing to fear from judgment (James 2:13; 1Jn. 2:1).

Ever Mindful of His Covenant - The Covenant (Ps. 7, 105)

Psalms 94:14; 105:7; 76:1-2; 94:14; 105:8-10; 103:3; 25:8; 29:11; 94:8-15; 105:1-45; 98:3; 105:42-44;  78:5; 105:45; Daniel 7:22; Genesis 8:1; 1 Samuel 1:19; Galatians 3:26-29.

“Arise, O Lord, in Your anger; Lift Yourself up because of the rage of my enemies; Rise up me to the judgment You have commanded!” (Psalm 7:6)

Our Great High Priest Who Remembers His Covenant

Like Aaron, who symbolized Christ, our Saviour bears the names of all His people on His heart in the holy place. Our great High Priest remembers all the words by which He has encouraged us to trust. He is ever mindful of His covenant.  {COL 148.2}

All who seek of Him shall find. All who knock will have the door opened to them. The excuse will not be made, Trouble Me not; the door is closed; I do not wish to open it. Never will one be told, I cannot help you. Those who beg at midnight for loaves to feed the hungry souls will be successful.  {COL 148.3}

Unbreakable Promises of God through His Only Begotten Son

Promises are estimated by the truth of the one who makes them. Many men make promises only to break them, to mock the heart that trusted in them. Those who lean upon such men lean upon broken reeds. But God is behind the promises he makes. He is ever mindful of his covenant, and his truth endures to all generations. "Blessed be the Lord, that hath given rest unto his people Israel, according to all that he promised: there hath not failed one word of all his good promise, which he promised by the hand of Moses his servant."  {YI, February 15, 1900 par. 9}

The gift of God's dear Son makes the promises ours of a surety. Christ clothed his divinity with humanity, and paid the ransom for man, and he desires that man shall rightly estimate the life thus provided. Man is to understand, by an experimental knowledge, the tender love of God for his creatures. God expressed his love in a wonderful way.

The Token of God's Love is Sufficient  for All

When trials come, do not give way to discouragement. Complaining and murmuring weaken the soul and dishonor God. Does it become us to be so ready with complaint? Are not the tokens of God's love sufficient to fill our hearts with thanksgiving and praise? Jesus desires us to trust in him, bearing patiently the delays we can not help. He remembers every word he has spoken to lead his children to trust in him. He is ever mindful of his covenant. His word will never fail. May the Lord increase our faith in our Intercessor.  {SW, March 13, 1902 par. 4}

We are under obligation to will to do the will of God. By striving to be like the Saviour, we are to prepare ourselves for service. He is working for us. We have an advocate in the heavenly courts, who is ever making intercession for us. The cry of the one ready to perish finds swift entrance to his ear. "He shall deliver the needy when he crieth, the poor also, and him that hath no helper." Shall we not work for Christ on the lines that he has marked out? Shall we not be advocates of those who are in need of help? "Having an high priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering."  {SW, March 13, 1902 par. 5}

Correct in Righteousness - When Tempted to Criticize and Judge Silence is Eloquence

When it becomes necessary for a minister to do a work of correction, he should be very careful to act righteously and wisely.  He is not to denounce the erring harshly before those who know not the truth.  The unconverted judge the servants of God by such actions, and conclude that this can not be the work of God.  Those who are not of our faith but who are convicted of the truth, when they see a lack of unity among the ministers who claim to be obeying the truth, close the door of their hearts, saying, We want none of these things.  Thus by the exercise of unsanctified speech, souls are turned from the truth, and an example given that opens the way for the things of truth and righteousness to be lowered in the dust.  Our workers, when tempted to speak hasty words of criticism and judgment, should remember that silence is golden.--Review and Herald, November 14, 1907. {ChL 62.2}

Precepts of the Decalogue - Pen of Fire

Says the prophet: "The heavens shall declare His righteousness: for God is judge Himself." Psalm 50:6. That holy law, God's righteousness, that amid thunder and flame was proclaimed from Sinai as the guide of life, is now revealed to men as the rule of judgment. The hand opens the tables, and there are seen the precepts of the Decalogue, traced as with a pen of fire. The words are so plain that all can read them. Memory is aroused, the darkness of superstition and heresy is swept from every mind, and God's ten words, brief, comprehensive, and authoritative, are presented to the view of all the inhabitants of the earth. {DD 48.2}

Consider the Following

The assurance that God's people have of being acquitted at judgment is based on the covenant that God has made with them (Ps. 105:7-8).

— He made the covenant with Abraham and Isaac (Ps. 105:9)

— He ratified it with Jacob, which is Israel (Ps. 105:10-11)

— Since they were few and weak, he protected them (Ps. 105:12-15)

— He saved Israel through Joseph (Ps. 105:16-24)

— When they were enslaved, he freed them (Ps. 105:25-38)

— He protected them in the desert (Ps. 105:39-43)

— He settled them in Canaan, the Promised Land (Ps. 105:44)

— As part of the covenant, the people were to keep the Law (Ps. 105:45)

God gives us his justice and protection; He delivers us from evil and saves us. Our part is to embrace his covenant and be willing to obey his laws. (Ps. 7).

We are called to proclaim the covenant among the nations, so that they too may praise God (Ps. 105:1-4)

Your Testimonies Are Very Sure - The Law (Ps. 25)

Psalms 19:7; 93:5; 119:165; 1:2,6; 18:30; 25:10; 18:7; 112:1,6-7; 119:165; 1:2-3,6; 119:105,110; Exodus 32:152 Samuel 7:16; 1 Chronicles 17:23Isaiah 24:18-21.

“All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth, To such as keep His covenant and His testimonies” (Psalm 25:10)

Bible - The Life-Giving Principles of Heaven

To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. Isaiah 8:20. {OFC 250.1}

The Lord’s philosophy, plainly outlined in His Word, is to be our rule of life. The entire being is to be under the control of the One who knows the end from the beginning. The Bible, and the Bible only is to be our guide. We must follow and obey the life-giving principles of heaven, not only for our inclinations. The wisdom and the power of God, working upon the receptive heart, brings mind and character into harmony with the laws and rules of heaven. Individually we must have the guidance of the Holy Spirit, in order to communicate to the world the great facts of truth and righteousness. . . . {OFC 250.2}

The Theocratic Government of God in the Last Days

And "it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land." Zech. 13:2.  That is, at the time that this gospel-proclaiming kingdom is set up, it will be a church without guile -- free from all idolaters and false teachers.  And it shall be fed by "one shepherd...even My servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd.  And I the Lord will be their God, and My servant David a prince among them." Ezek. 34:23, 24.

When the Lord thus takes "the reigns in His own hands" (Testimonies to Ministers, p. 300), and again rules the church as a theocratic government (in the last days), "it shall come to pass," as says Isaiah, "...that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills, and all nations shall flow unto it.  And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and He will teach us of His ways, and we will walk in His paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.  And He shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more." Isa. 2:2-4.

The Christ's Everlasting Kingdom

So with the ushering in of this everlasting kingdom, and the consequent restitution of all things, there shall be on the one hand a great awakening among the nations; scrapping vast stores of war implements which they have for years been laying up, they shall seek to go up to and become subjects of the kingdom, and to join the armies of the Lord, allowing Him to fight for them; while on the other hand there shall be feverish war preparations among those who refuse to awaken: hurling all into a super armament program, they turn even their farm implements into weapons of war against the kingdom of Christ -- His church (Hos. 3:5; Joel 3:9-12; Zech. 12:3-8).

The Foundation of God Standeth Sure

My brother, tell them that however the professed followers of Christ may depart from his instructions, "Nevertheless, the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his." You ask if Sr. White's testimony from God does not reprove these things. I answer, It does. The Lord has given warning and reproof to prevent this very state of things. The testimonies of God's word and of his Spirit have alike been disregarded. This is why there is such backsliding among us,--so little of the life and power of true godliness.  {RH, March 28, 1882 par. 14}

Consider the Following

Intimately linked to the pact are the “testimonies.” The testimonies are the set of laws and ordinances that God has given to his people as the foundation of the government of his Kingdom.

All testimonies derive from a common source: the ten commandments. What do Psalms tell us about the Law or testimony?

Psalm 1:1-3. They make us happy and fruitful

Psalm 25:10. They guide us along paths of mercy and truth

Psalm 93:5. They give us security, because they are firm

Psalm 112:1-2. They are a blessing to our family.

Psalm 119:165. They give us peace

Psalm 119:110. They prevent us from falling into the enemy's traps.
The psalmists appeal to God, who is Creator, King, Judge, Covenant Sovereign, and Lawgiver. In the world we can be safe and secure, even in the midst of the turmoil of the great Controversy, because God is sovereign and faithful in all he does and says.

Insights and Further Study

The church has turned back from following Christ her Leader and is steadily retreating toward Egypt. Yet few are alarmed or astonished at their want of spiritual power. Doubt, and even disbelief of the testimonies of the Spirit of God, is leavening our churches everywhere. Satan would have it thus. Ministers who preach self instead of Christ would have it thus. The testimonies are unread and unappreciated. God has spoken to you. Light has been shining from His word and from the testimonies, and both have been slighted and disregarded. The result is apparent in the lack of purity and devotion and earnest faith among us.  {5T 217.2}

Questions to Ponder

From the Pen of Inspiration

“Our Creator justly claims the right to do as He chooses with the creatures of His hand. He has a right to govern as He will, and not as man chooses. But He is not a severe judge, a harsh, exacting creditor. He is the very fountain of love, the giver of blessings innumerable. [...] We do not deserve all His benefits; but they are continued to us, notwithstanding our unworthiness and cruel ingratitude.
