SS25-Q1-L13: Love is the Fulfillment of the Law

March 22-28, 2025

Sabbath Afternoon–March 22, 2025

Scripture Reading for the Week:

Exod. 20:1-17; Rom. 6:1-3; Rom. 7:7-12; Jer. 31:31-34; Matt. 23:23-24; James 2:1-9

Thought for Meditation

Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. Romans 13:10.

The attribute that Christ appreciates most in man is charity (love) out of a pure heart. This is the fruit borne upon the Christian tree. "Every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God" (1 John 4:7). The Lord Jesus has said, "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another" (John 13:34, 35).  {TDG 365.2}

Memory Verse

Owe no man anything, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. {Rom. 13:8}

Purpose of the Study

This lesson aims to deepen our understanding of the inseparable connection between love and justice, as revealed in God’s law. It highlights how the two greatest commandments—to love God and love our neighbor—are the foundation of true obedience. By studying these principles, we will see how love fulfills the law and how justice ensures fairness and righteousness in our relationships with God and others. Ultimately, this lesson seeks to inspire a life of Christlike love, reflecting God's character in both mercy and justice.

Introduction

The law of God is often seen as a set of rigid rules, but at its core, it is a revelation of divine love. Jesus summarized the entire law in two commandments—love for God and love for our fellow man. This week's study explores the harmony between love and justice, showing that true love is not mere sentiment but an active principle that guides our actions in righteousness.

Many believe that grace replaces the law, but the Scriptures affirm that love is the fulfilling of the law, not its abolishment. Love does not negate justice; rather, it ensures that justice is exercised with compassion. Christ rebuked the religious leaders of His time for neglecting "the weightier matters of the law—judgment, mercy, and faith" (Matt. 23:23). This lesson invites us to examine how love and justice work together, shaping our lives into a reflection of God's character.

As we study, let us ask ourselves: How do we demonstrate love and justice in our daily interactions? Are we fulfilling the law by loving as Christ loved? May this lesson lead us to a deeper, more practical experience of God’s love in action.
