SS25-Q3-L11-Apostasy and Intercession
September 6-12, 2025
Sabbath Afternoon–September 6, 2025
Scripture Reading for the Week:
Exod. 32:1-6; Ps. 115:4-8; Isa. 44:9-10; Rom. 1:22-27; Exod. 32:7-32; Isa. 53:4
Thought for Meditation
"And it came to pass on the morrow that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin, and now I will go up unto the Lord, peradventure I shall make an atonement for your sin. And Moses returned unto the Lord, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold. Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written. And the Lord said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book. Therefore now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee. Behold, mine Angel shall go before thee. Nevertheless, in the day when I visit, I will visit their sin upon them. And the Lord plagued the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron made." {3SG 284.1}
Memory Verse
"Then Moses returned to the LORD and said, ‘Oh, these people have committed a great sin, and have made for themselves a god of gold! Yet now, if You will forgive their sin—but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which You have written’" {Exodus 32:31-32}
🔎 Purpose of the Lesson
The purpose of this week’s lesson is to understand the deep issues of apostasy and the divine principle of intercession, as revealed in the golden calf incident. God’s people must see that idolatry is not merely bowing to images of gold, but also exalting human ideas, traditions, and self above God (Ps. 115:4-8; Rom. 1:22-27). The lesson calls us to recognize the danger of departing from God’s truth and to appreciate the spirit of true intercession as exemplified in Moses—pointing us to Christ, the ultimate Mediator and Sin-bearer (Isa. 53:4).
From the Spirit of Prophecy we learn that “Idolatry exists in the church today as verily as it existed among ancient Israel, but it is not always in the form of bowing down to idols of wood and stone” (E.G. White, RH Dec. 17, 1889). This reveals that modern apostasy lies in exalting human opinion, pride, and self-dependence above God’s revealed Word.
From the Shepherd’s Rod we are shown that Moses’ burden for the people typifies the work of Christ and His faithful servants in the closing work:
“Moses’ willingness to have his name blotted out of the book for the sake of Israel, was but a faint type of Christ’s great sacrifice for mankind… and a lesson to His servants now, who must sigh and cry for the abominations in the church if they would be sealed” (SRod, Vol. 1, p. 44).
Thus, the prophetic insight for this week is clear: apostasy among God’s professed people invites divine judgment, but through faithful intercession God extends mercy and preserves a remnant. The call is for us to renounce every form of modern idolatry, to stand in the gap like Moses (Ezek. 22:30), and to cooperate with Christ in His closing mediatorial work before probation closes.
