SS25-Q3-L7-The Bread and Water of Life
August 9-15, 2025
Sabbath Afternoon–August 9, 2025
Scripture Reading for the Week:
Exod. 15:22-16:36; Gen. 3:1-6; Exod. 17:1-7; 1 Cor. 10:4; Exod. 18:1-27; 1 Cor. 10:11
Thought for Meditation
The Author of this spiritual life is unseen, and the exact method by which that life is imparted and sustained, it is beyond the power of human philosophy to explain. Yet the operations of the Spirit are always in harmony with the written word. As in the natural, so in the spiritual world. The natural life is preserved moment by moment by divine power; yet it is not sustained by a direct miracle, but through the use of blessings placed within our reach. So the spiritual life is sustained by the use of those means that Providence has supplied. If the follower of Christ would grow up "unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ" (Ephesians 4:13), he must eat of the bread of life and drink of the water of salvation. He must watch and pray and work, in all things giving heed to the instructions of God in His word. {AA 284.2}
Memory Verse
"And the LORD said to Moses, ‘How long do you refuse to keep My commandments and My laws? See! For the LORD has given you the Sabbath; therefore He gives you on the sixth day bread for two days. Let every man remain in his place; let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.’ So the people rested on the seventh day" (Exodus 16:28-30)
🔎 Purpose of the Lesson
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this comprehensive prophetic insight is to present a deeper, Bible-based and Spirit of Prophecy–supported understanding of the lesson theme “The Bread and Water of Life” as revealed in the experiences of ancient Israel and applied to God’s people today. This study aims to:
Reveal the Biblical Foundation – Drawing from Exodus 15–18, 1 Corinthians 10, Genesis 3, and related passages, the study will show that the bread and water provided to Israel in the wilderness were not merely physical necessities, but prophetic symbols of Christ as the true Bread from heaven and the Living Water, sustaining His people in their spiritual journey.
Highlight the Spiritual Lessons for Our Time – In harmony with 1 Corinthians 10:11, the wilderness experiences of Israel are “ensamples” for the final generation. The commentary will uncover how the tests of hunger, thirst, obedience, and Sabbath observance point to the closing work of God in preparing a purified, faith-filled people for the soon-coming Kingdom.
Integrate the Spirit of Prophecy Insight – Inspired commentary from Ellen G. White, such as Acts of the Apostles 284.2, will emphasize that spiritual life is sustained through divinely appointed means—daily communion with Christ, obedience to His Word, and reliance upon His Spirit—just as physical life is preserved by the bread and water God provides.
Apply the Prophetic Dimension – By linking the Exodus narrative to end-time prophetic truths, the study will call attention to the present truth message that God is again leading His people through a spiritual wilderness. The manna experience and the water from the Rock symbolize the refreshing of the Holy Spirit and the pure doctrine needed to survive the final test before entering the Promised Land.
In essence, this advanced commentary seeks to strengthen faith, inspire obedience, and deepen the believer’s appreciation of Christ as the unfailing source of life—both now and for eternity—while preparing the church for the fulfillment of God’s prophetic plan.
