Oh, what fallacies men will resort to in order to carry out false theories. The Lord pronounced His blessing upon all who keep holy the Sabbath day. His commandments are given to a thousand generations, and when that period is ended the redeemed host shall be in the city of God and observed the Sabbath there, and especially come up to worship God from Sabbath to Sabbath and from one new moon to another. The Purpose of This Week’s Lesson

This week’s study seeks to awaken God’s people to the supreme test of loyalty and worship in the midst of the great spiritual war between truth and error. It aims to reveal that genuine worship is not merely ritual or profession, but an expression of wholehearted obedience, sanctification, and covenant faithfulness to God’s revealed law and appointed times.

Just as ancient Israel was circumcised anew and renewed the covenant before entering Canaan (Joshua 5), so must modern Israel undergo a spiritual renewal of heart, casting away self-dependence and false worship to receive the righteousness of Christ—the true Passover Lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7; Hebrews 9:11–12).

Through this study, we are reminded that ultimate loyalty is demonstrated in keeping holy God’s Sabbath—the divine sign between Him and His people (Exodus 31:16–17)—especially in a time when the world’s powers unite to exalt false worship. Our allegiance is tested not by mere words but by obedience “in spirit and in truth” (John 4:23), even amid opposition and crisis.

“The Sabbath is the sign of obedience... The keeping of the Sabbath is a sign of loyalty to the true God.”

These inspired words reveal that Sabbath observance, rooted in God’s eternal covenant, becomes the final seal of divine loyalty. The true worshippers will honor the Creator through obedience to His immutable law, while false worshippers follow human traditions.

Inspiration, further emphasizes that true worship in the time of conflict is a separating message—a refining act that distinguishes those who worship the Creator in spirit and truth from those who compromise with the traditions of men.

Summary Thought

This study calls every believer to examine their worship and allegiance. True loyalty to God is revealed in consistent obedience to His commandments—especially the Sabbath—as the sign of sanctification and kingdom citizenship. In the midst of spiritual warfare, those who seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness will stand unmoved, sealed for deliverance, and prepared to worship the Lamb in Mount Zion (Revelation 14:1–7; Isaiah 66:23).

Historical and Spiritual Background

After crossing the Jordan, Israel stood on the borders of Jericho, poised to enter the Promised Land. Yet before they could conquer, God commanded Joshua to renew the covenant through circumcision—a sacred act signifying consecration, obedience, and spiritual separation.

The generation born in the wilderness had not been circumcised. Thus, before claiming Canaan, they had to reaffirm their covenant relationship with God. The physical act of circumcision symbolized cutting away the filth of the flesh, preparing the heart for purity, loyalty, and service (Deut. 10:16; Rom. 2:28–29).

Covenant Renewal: The Prerequisite of Conquest

The renewal of the covenant was not a mere ritual. It was a divine requirement before victory. God could not lead an uncircumcised, unconsecrated people into battle for His kingdom.

“The uncircumcised in heart cannot serve the Lord.” — Ezekiel 44:7–9.

Circumcision, in the prophetic sense, denotes heart purification and spiritual reformation—a removal of unbelief, rebellion, and worldliness.

Ellen White states:

“Before God can use His people as a means of salvation, He desires that they shall be purified from every defilement of flesh and spirit.” — Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 330.

Thus, before the Israelites could fight the battles of Canaan, they must first conquer self. This reveals the divine order of redemption: the inward cleansing precedes outward conquest.

The “Sharp Knives” and Their Prophetic Meaning

“Make thee sharp knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel.” — Joshua 5:2.

The “sharp knives” symbolize the cutting edge of present truth—the living message that separates sin from the soul (Heb. 4:12). Just as Joshua used physical knives, so today, God’s servants are commanded to use the sword of the Spirit to remove spiritual uncleanness from His people.

In Shepherd’s Rod, Vol. 1, p. 110, applies this principle prophetically:

“The work of circumcision today is not of the flesh, but of the heart; it is the message of reformation which cuts away sin and unbelief from the heart of the church.”

In our time, the “second circumcision” signifies the final purification of the church before entering the heavenly Canaan—the kingdom of peace.

“Before the work is closed up and the sealing of God’s people is finished, we shall receive the outpouring of the Spirit of God.” — Early Writings, p. 85.

Thus, this circumcision points to the antitypical purification—the cutting off of the unfaithful in the church (Ezek. 9), making ready a people for translation.

The Reproach of Egypt Rolled Away

“And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you.” — Joshua 5:9.

Egypt represents bondage to sin and unbelief (Rev. 11:8). The “reproach of Egypt” signifies the shame of past disobedience, compromise, and worldliness. When Israel renewed the covenant, the reproach was removed—symbolizing divine forgiveness and restoration.

Ellen White parallels this with the final purification of the church:

“In the time when His people are being purified, the work of separation will be done with care and in righteousness.” — Testimonies, Vol. 5, p. 80.

The rolling away of Egypt’s reproach marks the beginning of a new era—a purified people standing under the full favor of God, ready to conquer and inherit the kingdom.

Houteff further identifies this act as symbolic of the modern Israel’s purification before the Loud Cry:

“The church must be purified before the message of the Loud Cry can be proclaimed with power.” — Timely Greetings, Vol. 1, No. 9, p. 10.

Thus, as ancient Israel entered Canaan only after the “reproach of Egypt” was rolled away, so must spiritual Israel be cleansed before inheriting the kingdom of peace.

The Prophetic Parallel to Our Time

Ancient Type: The circumcision at Gilgal preceded the conquest of Jericho.
Modern Antitype: The spiritual circumcision—the purification of the church—precedes the fall of modern Babylon.

Just as Jericho’s walls fell not by human might but by divine power, so in our time, God’s people—renewed in covenant and purified in heart—will witness the fall of the spiritual Jericho, the confederacy of apostate religion and worldly power.

“Only those who have overcome by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony will be found faithful when the final test comes.” — The Great Controversy, p. 593.

Prophetic Lesson for the Remnant Church

Renewal before conquest — Reformation must precede revival. The heart must be purified before the Spirit can be poured out.
Separation before victory — The cutting away of sin (circumcision) is essential to divine success.
Obedience before possession — The covenant relationship must be renewed before the kingdom can be inherited.

The church stands today on the borders of the heavenly Canaan. The antitypical “Gilgal” moment has come—the time for the renewal of the covenant through obedience to the advancing light of truth.

Consider the Following

❖ The renewal of the covenant (Joshua 5:1-9)

— Although more than 40 years had passed since they left Egypt, Israel had not yet entered the Promised Land. Now, their feet were treading it. It was time to remove “the reproach of Egypt” and renew the covenant with God (Josh. 5:9).

— Before eating the first Passover, Israelite males were circumcised, for no uncircumcised person could partake of it (Ex. 12:48). But because they refused to enter Canaan the first time, the covenant was broken, and no Israelite was circumcised in the wilderness (Josh. 5:5).

— To renew the covenant, it was necessary to repeat that physical sign (Gen. 17:10). This act put what was important first. For us, it is an example to follow: “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Mt. 6:33).

The renewal of the covenant in Joshua’s time foreshadows God’s call today for His people to enter into a new experience of heart circumcision—the cutting away of pride, unbelief, and self-sufficiency.

Before the final victory and the fall of spiritual Jericho, the church must be cleansed, sealed, and consecrated.

“Only those who are living up to the light they have will receive greater light.” — 5T 705.
“The church that is to be purified will then go forth fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners.” — SRod, Vol. 2, p. 166.

Let us therefore yield our hearts to the divine Knife of Truth, that the reproach of Egypt may be rolled away from us, and that we may stand as a renewed covenant people—ready to conquer and possess the land.

Prophetic Theme Summary:

The Prophetic Setting — The Covenant People Restored

After forty years of wilderness wandering, Israel finally celebrated their first Passover in Canaan. This was more than a memorial meal—it was the seal of renewal of their covenant with God, following their circumcision at Gilgal (Joshua 5:2–9).

The Passover, instituted in Egypt (Exodus 12), symbolized redemption by the blood of the Lamb, deliverance from bondage, and consecration to divine service. In Canaan, it took on a new prophetic significance: the transition from wilderness wandering to kingdom settlement, from promise to fulfillment.

Ellen G. White beautifully links these events:

“Before the children of Israel could receive the promise, they must renew their covenant with God. The rite of circumcision and the celebration of the Passover testified to their separation from the nations around them, and to their consecration to the Lord.” — Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 485.

Thus, before Israel could partake of the fruits of the land, they must first remember the Blood that redeemed them and renew their spiritual allegiance to their Redeemer.

The Typology of the Passover

The Passover lamb was a shadow of Christ’s sacrifice, the true “Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world” (John 1:29, 36).

Paul affirms this prophetic fulfillment:

“For even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.” — 1 Corinthians 5:7.

In Egypt, the blood on the doorposts signified protection from destruction. In Canaan, it signified victory through obedience. Thus, the Passover spans from deliverance (Egypt) to inheritance (Canaan)—from justification to glorification.

This twofold meaning reveals the progressive nature of redemption:

In Egypt, the blood delivered them from death.
In Canaan, the blood prepared them for victory.

Inspiration clarifies this progression:

“The deliverance from Egypt was only a type of the greater deliverance from sin and sinners. The blood on the doorposts pointed forward to the blood of Christ, and the eating of the lamb signified partaking of His Word. Only such who are under the blood and who eat of the Lamb—believe and obey His Word—shall escape the destroying angels of Ezekiel 9.” — Shepherd’s Rod, Vol. 2, p. 187.

Thus, the first Passover in Canaan represents not merely a feast but a prophetic antitype of the final purification and establishment of God’s kingdom—a people wholly under the blood, feeding upon Christ’s truth, and ready for divine conquest.

The Manna Ceased — A Transition to a New Economy

“And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land.” — Joshua 5:12.

When Israel entered Canaan and ate of its fruits, the manna ceased—a sign that the period of divine forbearance and wandering had ended. The cessation of manna marked the end of the wilderness experience and the beginning of self-sustained divine order under the covenant promises.

Prophetically, this cessation represents the transition from the church militant to the church triumphant—from dependence on wilderness provision (symbolic of spiritual immaturity) to the full inheritance of the Promised Land (symbolic of the Kingdom).

Ellen White parallels this shift:

“When the church shall be purified and clothed with the garments of Christ’s righteousness, the time of her wilderness wandering will be ended.” — Prophets and Kings, p. 725.

And inspiration further interprets this prophetic moment:

“The cessation of the manna and the eating of the fruit of the land denote that the old spiritual diet—the limited light—has come to an end, and that a new, richer diet of truth is to be enjoyed in the Kingdom.” — Timely Greetings, Vol. 1, No. 17, p. 10.

Thus, just as Israel transitioned from manna to Canaan’s fruit, so spiritual Israel will soon partake of the rich truth and spiritual nourishment of the kingdom era, after the purification foretold in Ezekiel 9.

The Passover and the Cross — Its Eternal Significance

Jesus Christ, during His final Passover with the disciples, transferred the symbols of the lamb and the cup to the Lord’s Supper, declaring:

“This is my body… This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.” — Matthew 26:26–28.

Thus, the Passover became the Communion of the New Covenant, pointing both backward to Calvary and forward to the Marriage Supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:9).

Ellen White confirms:

“The symbols of bread and wine point to the great sacrifice that was made for the salvation of man. But they also point forward to the great banquet that Christ will prepare for His redeemed.” — Desire of Ages, p. 659.

The antitypical Passover will therefore reach its consummation in the Kingdom—when Christ, the true Joshua, shall again “drink it new” with His people (Matt. 26:29). This points prophetically to the 144,000, the firstfruits who will celebrate the final Passover—the marriage supper of the Lamb—as a redeemed, purified, and covenant-keeping people.

This parallel confirms that the Passover at Gilgal is a type of the final covenant renewal with spiritual Israel—God’s faithful remnant who, under the blood of Christ, shall enter the Kingdom and partake of the fruit of the land.

The Remnant’s Present Duty

The prophetic lesson calls the church today to renew its covenant through true spiritual participation in Christ’s sacrifice—not in form, but in power.
To “keep the Passover in Canaan” spiritually is to live under the atoning blood of Christ, walking in full obedience to advancing truth and preparing for the final deliverance.

Ellen White appeals:

“We are not only to look back to the Cross, but forward to the crown. The same Christ who gave Himself for us will soon return to take us to Himself.” — DA 659.

Inspiration emphasizes:

“Before the celebration of the great feast in the Kingdom, there must be a cleansing in the church—so that only those who have the mark of deliverance shall stand.” — SRod, Vol. 2, p. 252.

Thus, our preparation for the antitypical Passover requires circumcision of heart, faith in the Lamb, and loyalty to His advancing message.

Consider the Following
❖ The First Passover in Canaan (Joshua 5:10-12)

— From Egypt to Canaan, Israel followed a “ chiastic ” process, repeating the events in reverse order: Egypt => Circumcision and Passover => Crossing of the Red Sea => Desert => Crossing of the Jordan => Circumcision and Passover => Canaan .

— The first Passover was a symbol of the liberation from Egypt. The second Passover, celebrated by the new generation, was a symbol of their taking possession of the Promised Land.

— Shortly before his crucifixion, Jesus gave this rite a new meaning, with new symbols: the lamb became bread, and the blood became wine.

— They are now symbols of the body and blood of our Redeemer, who brings us out of Egypt. (that is, out of our sin), and brings us to the Promised Land (1 Cor. 11:23-26).

Prophetic Summary

As Israel’s manna ceased, so the old forms and shadows of religion must cease. The Gilgal experience calls each believer to enter a new spiritual economy—where truth, purity, and obedience prepare the soul for the eternal banquet.

“Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb.” — Revelation 19:9.
“Only those who have washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb will eat of that feast.” — SRod, Vol. 2, p. 251.

Let us therefore keep the feast—not with the old leaven of sin and worldliness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth (1 Cor. 5:8), for the Passover in the Kingdom is near at hand.

🕊️ Prophetic Insight: Worship Among Mountains — Altars of Renewal

The Setting: Worship Between Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim

After Israel’s victory over Ai, Joshua led the people to Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim as commanded in Deuteronomy 27. Between these two mountains, one representing blessing (Gerizim) and the other cursing (Ebal), the nation was called to renew its covenant and worship the God of Israel through sacrifice and the reading of the Law.

This solemn assembly signified that before Israel could continue its conquest of Canaan, it must first reaffirm its loyalty to the divine covenant that secured their victory and prosperity.

Ellen White writes:

“It was God’s purpose that the law should be impressed upon the minds of all Israel. Every command was to be distinctly heard, and its blessings and curses to be understood, that none might be ignorant of the conditions upon which they were entering Canaan.” — Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 500.

Thus, the building of the altar on Mount Ebal was not merely ritual; it was an act of national consecration—a visible renewal of their commitment to God’s covenant Word.

The Symbolism of the Mountains — Blessing and Cursing

The two mountains stood side by side in the land of promise, facing each other like divine witnesses—one verdant and fertile (Gerizim), the other barren and rocky (Ebal). Their contrasting appearance symbolized the two paths of destiny that lay before Israel: obedience and blessing, or disobedience and curse (Deut. 11:26–28).

“Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse.” — Deuteronomy 11:26.

Prophetically, these mountains represent the great division in the church between those who receive the blessings of truth and those who reject it. As inspiration explains:

“The mountains of blessing and cursing typify two classes in the church—the faithful and the unfaithful. The faithful stand upon Mount Gerizim, rejoicing in obedience, while the unfaithful stand upon Mount Ebal, bearing the reproach of disobedience.” — Shepherd’s Rod, Vol. 1, p. 176.

Thus, this event is a prophetic shadow of the final separation within spiritual Israel—when the law and truth will again be proclaimed clearly in the hearing of all, and each believer will take their stand either for or against the covenant of God.

The Altar on Mount Ebal — Worship in the Midst of Judgment

“Then Joshua built an altar unto the Lord God of Israel in Mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of the Lord commanded.” — Joshua 8:30–31.

Significantly, the altar was built not on Mount Gerizim, the mountain of blessing, but on Mount Ebal, the mountain of cursing. Why? Because worship and atonement must first address the curse of sin before the blessing can be received.

Ellen White notes:

“Only through the shedding of blood could there be remission of sin. The altar on Mount Ebal pointed forward to Christ’s sacrifice, by which the curse was lifted and the sinner reconciled to God.” — Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 501.

Theologically, this teaches that the path to blessing passes through repentance and sacrifice. Before one can ascend to Gerizim (blessing), he must first approach Ebal (atonement).

Inspiration interprets this altar as a type of the altar of reformation in the end time:

“The altar built on Mount Ebal typifies the re-establishment of true worship after apostasy—when the curse of sin is rolled away through the truth of reformation.” — Timely Greetings, Vol. 1, No. 18, p. 14.

Thus, Mount Ebal symbolizes the place where the curse of disobedience meets the mercy of God, foreshadowing the purification and renewal of the church before the Loud Cry.

The Altar of Unhewn Stones — Purity of Worship

“An altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up any iron.” — Joshua 8:31.

The altar was to be built of unhewn stones, untouched by human tools. This signifies that human wisdom, works, or inventions have no part in divine worship. True worship must rest upon what God Himself provides—upon His unaltered Word and plan.

Ellen White emphasizes:

“God would have no display of human skill or device in His service. The simplicity and purity of worship were to distinguish His people from the idolaters around them.” — PP 501.

Likewise, inspiration interprets the unhewn stones as the unmixed and uncorrupted truths of God:

“The altar of whole stones symbolizes the pure truth, unaltered by human interpretation or denominational tradition.” — SRod, Vol. 1, p. 182.

Final Thought:

The entire experience from Gilgal to Shiloh is a prophetic miniature of the last generation’s journey—from spiritual renewal to kingdom establishment. As ancient Israel found rest when God’s presence filled the tabernacle at Shiloh, so will modern Israel find peace and glory when Christ, the true Shiloh, dwells visibly among His purified people in the soon-coming Kingdom of God.
