SS25-Q2-L1-Some Principles of Prophecy
March 29-April 4, 2025
Sabbath Afternoon–March 29, 2025
Scripture Reading for the Week:
Jer. 29:23-24; Ps. 139:1-6; Dan. 12:4; Rev. 22:10; 2 Tim. 3:15-17; Heb. 4:12
Thought for Meditation
The Bible is the great educator; for it is not possible prayerfully to study its sacred pages without having the intellect disciplined, ennobled, purified, and refined. "Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: but let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord. Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will punish all them which are circumcised with the uncircumcised." [Jeremiah 9:23, 24.] {CE 103.1}
Memory Verse
But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I [am] the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these [things] I delight, saith the LORD. {Jeremiah 9:24}

The study on “Some Principles of Prophecy” aims to:
Deepen Understanding of Prophecy – To recognize that prophecy is not merely about predicting future events but about revealing God's character, His will, and His plan for humanity.
Emphasize the Progressive Nature of Truth – To understand that divine revelation unfolds in stages, and God grants deeper prophetic insight to His people in the last days.
Strengthen Faith in God’s Word – To affirm that the Scriptures are the foundation of all truth, sufficient for salvation, and the ultimate authority in interpreting prophecy.
Prepare for the Final Crisis – To realize that true prophecy calls for revival and reformation, urging God’s people to examine their hearts and fully surrender to His will.
Apply Prophetic Truth Practically – To move beyond intellectual study and allow prophecy to transform character, leading to greater obedience, mission work, and readiness for Christ’s soon return.
📌 Appeal:
🔹 Are you willing to submit to the prophetic guidance of God’s Word and let it shape your life?
🔹 Will you embrace the call to reformation, preparing for the sealing and the final events?

Prophetic Insights: Whosoever Reads, Let Him Understand
Principle #1: Read with the Right Attitude
Key Texts: Matthew 24:15; Revelation 1:3; Matthew 11:29; Jeremiah 9:23-24.
“Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near. (Revelation 1:3)
The Word of God calls for a solemn and reverent approach to its study. In Matthew 24:15, Christ Himself admonished, "Whoso readeth, let him understand." This is not a mere call to casual reading but an earnest plea to seek divine wisdom and comprehension, for the words of prophecy carry life-saving truths. The apostle John, in Revelation 1:3, further emphasizes the blessing pronounced upon those who read, hear, and take to heart the messages of prophecy, because "the time is near."
Reverence and Humility (Matthew 11:29) Christ invites us to take His yoke and learn from Him, for He is meek and lowly in heart. A teachable spirit is essential in understanding divine revelations. The proud and self-sufficient heart will not discern the deep things of God. Inspiration warns:
"It is the first and highest duty of every rational being to learn from the Scriptures what is truth, and then to walk in the light and encourage others to follow his example. We should day by day study the Bible diligently, weighing every thought and comparing scripture with scripture. With divine help we are to form our opinions for ourselves as we are to answer for ourselves before God." {GC 598.2}
"The truths most plainly revealed in the Bible have been involved in doubt and darkness by learned men, who, with a pretense of great wisdom, teach that the Scriptures have a mystical, a secret, spiritual meaning not apparent in the language employed. These men are false teachers. It was to such a class that Jesus declared: "Ye know not the Scriptures, neither the power of God." Mark 12:24. The language of the Bible should be explained according to its obvious meaning, unless a symbol or figure is employed. Christ has given the promise: "If any man will do His will, he shall know of the doctrine." John 7:17. If men would but take the Bible as it reads, if there were no false teachers to mislead and confuse their minds, a work would be accomplished that would make angels glad and that would bring into the fold of Christ thousands upon thousands who are now wandering in error." {GC 598.3} (Great Controversy, p. 598).
Spiritual Discernment Over Intellectual Pride (Jeremiah 9:23-24) True wisdom is not found in human intellect, strength, or riches but in understanding and knowing the Lord. Those who approach prophecy with preconceived opinions and theological biases often miss the light that is shining from the pages of Scripture.
"The last great delusion is soon to open before us. Antichrist is to perform his marvelous works in our sight. So closely will the counterfeit resemble the true that it will be impossible to distinguish between them except by the Holy Scriptures. By their testimony every statement and every miracle must be tested." {GC 593.1}
"Those who endeavor to obey all the commandments of God will be opposed and derided. They can stand only in God. In order to endure the trial before them, they must understand the will of God as revealed in His word; they can honor Him only as they have a right conception of His character, government, and purposes, and act in accordance with them. None but those who have fortified the mind with the truths of the Bible will stand through the last great conflict. To every soul will come the searching test: Shall I obey God rather than men? The decisive hour is even now at hand. Are our feet planted on the rock of God's immutable word? Are we prepared to stand firm in defense of the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus?" {GC 593.2} (Great Controversy, p. 593).
Reading with a Sense of Urgency (Revelation 1:3) The book of Revelation opens with a solemn blessing to those who read, hear, and keep the words of prophecy, for "the time is near." Understanding prophecy is not for curiosity’s sake but for preparation. The Shepherd’s Rod literature expounds on this principle:
"The closer we come to the time of the end, the more urgent becomes the need for a correct understanding of prophecy." (Timely Greetings, Vol. 2, No. 39, p. 4).

Reading with the right attitude means:
Seeking the Holy Spirit’s guidance in every study session (John 16:13).
Allowing the Scriptures to interpret themselves, comparing spiritual things with spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:13).
Being willing to reform our lives according to the light received (James 1:22).
Avoiding a hasty or careless approach, for prophecy is to be studied "precept upon precept" (Isaiah 28:10).
In conclusion, those who heed the divine instruction to read with the right attitude will be blessed with an understanding that leads to salvation and preparation for the final events. The warning in Matthew 24:15 is clear—whosoever reads, let him understand. The question remains: Will we read with humility, reverence, and obedience?
Consider the Following
Principle 1: Read with the right attitude.
❖ There is a blessing for those who read prophecy (Rev. 1:3a.) However, very few feel blessed by reading the prophecies contained in Revelation, Daniel, Isaiah, Zechariah, etc.
❖ Why does this happen? Because they don't read them with the right attitude. When Jesus said,
"Let the reader understand" (Matthew 24:15,) he was telling us that we are capable of
understanding them, but under certain conditions:
— Be willing to heed what prophecy teaches us (Rev. 1:3)
— Recognize that we do not have the knowledge necessary to understand them, but rather we depend on divine wisdom to do so (Mt. 11:25; Jer. 9:23)
❖ Reading prophecy to explain my perspective on how certain events will unfold, or without
perceiving God's voice in it, is not a correct approach.

Prophetic Insights: God Wants to Be Understood
Principle #2: Discover the Main Theme
Key Texts: Isa. 55:9; Ps. 139:1-6; Ps. 147:5; Rom. 11:33; 1 John 3:20; 2 Tim. 3:14-15; Col. 1:16; John 1:1-3.
And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. (2 Timothy 3:15)
The Scriptures reveal that God desires to be known and understood by His people. Although His wisdom and knowledge are infinitely higher than ours (Isaiah 55:9), He has made Himself known through His Word, creation, and most importantly, through Jesus Christ. As Paul wrote in 2 Timothy 3:15, the Holy Scriptures "are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus."
God’s Infinite Wisdom and Knowledge (Psalm 147:5; Romans 11:33) God’s understanding is beyond human measure, yet He condescends to reveal Himself to those who seek Him with a sincere heart. The Shepherd’s Rod literature affirms:
"Only through divine enlightenment can man begin to comprehend the mysteries of God’s wisdom." (Shepherd’s Rod, Vol. 1, p. 11).
God’s Desire for Relationship (Psalm 139:1-6; 1 John 3:20) The Bible assures us that God knows every detail about us, from our thoughts to our deepest struggles. His desire is not only to be understood intellectually but to have a personal relationship with His children.
Christ as the Center of the Scriptures (Colossians 1:16; John 1:1-3) Jesus Christ is the focal point of all Scripture. He is the Word made flesh, the Creator, the Redeemer, and the coming King. The Spirit of Prophecy states:
"The central theme of the Bible, the theme about which every other in the whole book clusters, is the redemption plan, the restoration in the human soul of the image of God. From the first intimation of hope in the sentence pronounced in Eden to that last glorious promise of the Revelation, "They shall see His face; and His name shall be in their foreheads" (Revelation 22:4), the burden of every book and every passage of the Bible is the unfolding of this wondrous theme,--man's uplifting,--the power of God, "which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." 1 Corinthians 15:57. {Ed 125.2} (Education, p. 125).
Approach Bible study with the belief that God wants to be understood.
Recognize Christ as the unifying theme of Scripture.
Study with the intent of applying biblical truths in daily life.
Depend on the Holy Spirit for illumination (John 16:13).

God is not a distant or mysterious deity who hides Himself from humanity. He has revealed Himself in His Word, and those who diligently seek Him will understand His purpose and plan. The question is: Will we make knowing Him our highest priority?
Consider the Following
Principle 2: Discover the main theme.
❖ The psalmist acknowledged that he could not comprehend God’s knowledge, for His knowledge is infinite (Ps. 139:6; 147:5.) Paul tells us that God’s actions are “unsearchable,”
that is, impossible to study and understand (Rom. 11:33.)
❖ It is as impossible for us to understand the thought of God as it is for us to touch the moon with our hand (Isa. 55:9.)
❖ Fortunately, God has made an effort to come down to our level and help us understand something of His thoughts. In the Bible, the Word of God, even the simplest mind can perceive God's love and the salvation He offers us (2 Tim. 3:15.)
❖ The Plan of Salvation is the main theme of the Bible and, of course, of the prophecies contained therein

Prophetic Insights: Daniel-Shut Up the Words
Principle #3: Leverage or Use of Science
Key Texts: Daniel 12:4; Rev. 22:10.
But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased. (Daniel 12:4)
The book of Daniel was sealed until "the time of the end," when knowledge would increase and many would "run to and fro" (Daniel 12:4). This prophecy points to both spiritual enlightenment and rapid advancements in knowledge, particularly in science and technology, which have played a role in fulfilling end-time prophecy.

Sabbath School - Meat In Due Season Advanced Commentary - 13. From Dust to Stars
An Explosion of Knowledge (Daniel 12:4) The vast increase in human understanding, particularly in biblical prophecy and technological advancements, is a sign of the last days. The Spirit of Prophecy states:
Investigation of Doctrine.--There is no excuse for anyone in taking the position that there is no more truth to be revealed, and that all our expositions of Scripture are without an error. The fact that certain doctrines have been held as truth for many years by our people, is not a proof that our ideas are infallible. Age will not make error into truth, and truth can afford to be fair. No true doctrine will lose anything by close investigation. {CW 35.2}
"There are wonderful truths yet to be revealed to the people in this time of peril." (Counsels to Writers and Editors, p. 35).
Unlocking the Sealed Book (Revelation 22:10) The sealing of the book in Daniel’s time signified that full understanding of prophetic events would be reserved for the last generation. The Shepherd’s Rod literature confirms:
"The unsealing of the book of Daniel signifies the increase of knowledge in the things of God and the unfolding of end-time events." (Timely Greetings, Vol. 1, No. 21, p. 3).
Recognize technological advancements as part of God's providence.
Use modern tools to spread the gospel (Matthew 24:14).
Avoid reliance on human wisdom over divine revelation (1 Corinthians 1:25).
Science and prophecy align to confirm that we are living in the final days. Will we use this knowledge to draw closer to God and prepare for His soon return?
Consider the Following
Principle 3: Leverage science.
❖ Along with the command to seal the book—to hide its contents—until the time of the end, Daniel was told of an increase in the search for knowledge—the knowledge necessary—to understand it (Dan. 12:4.)
❖ When Jesus became incarnate, this seal began to be broken. Some of Daniel's prophecies could now be understood (Matthew 24:15.) Later, they were supplemented by other prophecies written in an "unsealed" book: Revelation (Revelation 22:10.)
❖ In 1798, when Napoleon ended the papal hegemony that had maintained its iron grip for centuries, many saw this as the fulfillment of Daniel's prophecies. God had completely opened the book of Daniel, offering the knowledge necessary to understand it.
❖ Not only were the prophecies better understood since then, but other topics (the Sabbath, or the state of the dead, for example) were also correctly understood again.
❖ Let us ask the Author of prophecy to give us the necessary science to understand it.

Prophetic Insights: Studying the Word
Principle #4: Holistic and Contextual
Key Texts: Daniel 8:14; Matthew 5:18; 2 Timothy 3:15-17; Luke 24:27.
“And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself” (Luke 24:27)
The study of Scripture must be approached holistically and in its proper context. Jesus demonstrated this principle in Luke 24:27, where He expounded on all the Scriptures concerning Himself, showing that the entire Bible is a connected revelation of truth.
Understanding Prophetic Timelines (Daniel 8:14) The 2300-day prophecy is an example of the need for contextual study. Misinterpretation arises when passages are taken out of their prophetic framework.

Prophetic Insights on the Present Truth - 23. Why is 1844 significant concerning the Sanctuary?
Prophetic Insights on the Present Truth - 24. What is the Significance of the 1844?
The Enduring Nature of Scripture (Matthew 5:18) Jesus affirmed that not one jot or tittle of the law would pass away, emphasizing the importance of understanding the full context of God’s Word.
All Scripture is Profitable (2 Timothy 3:15-17) Every part of the Bible contributes to our understanding of truth, guiding us in righteousness.
By applying these principles, we ensure that our study leads to a clearer, more faithful interpretation of God’s Word. Will we commit to studying Scripture in the way Christ Himself taught?
Consider the Following
Principle 4: Holistic and contextual.
❖ Reading prophecies in isolation will only lead to fantastic interpretations, far removed from their true meaning.
❖ Jesus taught us to study the Bible holistically, that is, seen as a whole (Luke 24:27.)
❖ Taking only one part (for example, a prophecy) and drawing conclusions based solely on that part is a flawed way to study God's Word. The correct approach is to compare these texts with others that address the same topic in various parts of the Bible.
❖ Another point to consider is the context, that is, the context surrounding the text being studied. What do the texts before and after it say? Who wrote it, when, and why?
❖ Taking a passage out of context can make it say whatever you want, but not the truth it wants to teach us.

Prophetic Insights: Figurative or Literal?
Principle #5: Meaning of Symbols
Key Texts: Dan. 7:7, Dan. 8:3, Dan. 7:24; Rev. 1:16, Eph. 6:17, Heb. 4:12; Rev. 12:1; Rev. 21:2; Eph. 5:31-32; Jer. 6:2; 1 Peter 5:13
“The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the seven golden lampstands is this: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches” (Revelation 1:20)
The Bible is rich with symbolic language, and understanding the difference between literal and figurative expressions is essential for proper interpretation. Revelation 1:20 provides a clear example: "The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the seven golden lampstands is this: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches."
Prophetic Insights on the Present Truth - 2. Prophetic Insight on Chapter 1
Symbols Have Biblical Definitions (Daniel 7:7, Daniel 8:3, Daniel 7:24)
Beasts represent kingdoms (Daniel 7:17).
Horns symbolize kings or rulers (Daniel 7:24).
Context Determines Meaning (Ephesians 6:17, Hebrews 4:12)
The "sword" represents the Word of God, not a literal blade.
Prophetic Symbols Must Be Compared with Scripture (Jeremiah 6:2, Revelation 12:1, Revelation 21:2)
A woman symbolizes the church.
By correctly distinguishing between literal and figurative meanings, we avoid misinterpretation and gain a deeper understanding of prophecy.
Consider the Following
Principle 5: Meaning of symbols.
❖ Biblical prophecies are replete with symbols and images. In a few cases, the prophecy itself tells us its meaning (Dan. 8:20; Rev. 1:20.) However, in most cases, its meaning is not explained.
❖ Trying to take these images literally is absurd. Jesus does not have a sharp, two-edged sword coming out of his mouth (Rev. 1:16.)
❖ To understand these symbols, we must turn to other parts of the Bible where similar ideas or symbols are used. Let's look at some examples:
— What do the horns of the dread beast in Daniel 7:7-8 mean?
They are kings, and the kingdoms they represent (Dan. 7:24; 8:21)
— What does the sword coming out of Jesus' mouth in Revelation 1:16 mean?
The Bible (Eph. 6:17; Heb. 4:12)
— Who is the woman in Revelation 12:1?
God's Faithful People (Eph. 5:31-32; 2 Cor. 11:2)
❖ God has made sure that whoever searches the prophecies is able to understand them.

Further study is encouraged through:
Spirit of Prophecy writings, particularly The Great Controversy and Education.
Shepherd’s Rod literature, especially Timely Greetings and Shepherd’s Rod, Vol. 1 & 2.
Prayerful meditation and application, ensuring that knowledge transforms our lives.
May we continue to seek deeper understanding, knowing that God rewards those who diligently study His Word (2 Timothy 2:15).
🔹 Theme: Understanding Prophecy as a Revelation of God’s Character and Purpose
📖 Jeremiah 9:23-24; Psalm 139:1-6
Prophetic Insight:
The Scriptures are given to educate God’s people in truth, discipline the mind, and purify the character. The Spirit of Prophecy affirms that divine wisdom is superior to human knowledge, and that true understanding is found in knowing God.
🔹 SOP Insight:
“A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education.” (FE 165.1)
“The only safety for the people is in making the Word of God their guide and counselor.” (5T 708.1)
📌 The wisdom of man fades in comparison to divine instruction. Understanding prophecy requires humility, a teachable spirit, and submission to God's leading.
🔹 SRod Insight:
"The Bible is its own interpreter, and only those who are led by the Spirit of Truth can truly understand its prophetic messages." (SRod, Vol. 2, p. 255)
📌 Prophetic understanding comes through divine illumination, not merely intellectual study.
📖 Daniel 12:4; Revelation 22:10
Prophetic Insight:
Daniel was instructed that prophetic truth would be "sealed" until the time of the end (Dan. 12:4), but John was told not to seal the prophecy, indicating its fulfillment in the last days. This progressive unfolding of truth confirms that God reveals His plans at the appointed time.
🔹 SOP Insight:
"New truth is not independent of the old, but an unfolding of it." (COL 127.4)
📌 Present Truth builds upon past revelations. The sealing of Daniel's prophecy points to a later, divinely appointed time for understanding.
🔹 SRod Insight:
"The unsealing of prophecy is the work of the Spirit of Truth in the last days, bringing an advanced understanding of God's plans for His people." (1TG 10:27)
📌 The final generation will receive greater light concerning prophecy than any before them.
📖 2 Timothy 3:15-17; Hebrews 4:12
Prophetic Insight:
The Bible is given not just for intellectual understanding but for transformation and preparation for eternal life. It is a living document, able to convict the heart and shape character.
🔹 SOP Insight:
“The Scriptures are the great agency in the transformation of character.” (COL 100.1)
📌 God's Word is not just to be studied but to be lived. The Bible prepares the faithful for the trials and events of the last days.
🔹 SRod Insight:
"Those who cling to the Word, allowing it to change their lives, will be part of the final remnant sealed for the Kingdom." (SRod, Vol. 1, p. 30)
📌 The remnant people of God will be identified by their full obedience to the truth revealed in the Scriptures.
📖 Jeremiah 9:24 (Memory Verse)
Prophetic Insight:
God delights in lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness—three foundational aspects of His character. True prophecy does not merely predict future events but reveals who God is and how He works in human history.
🔹 SOP Insight:
"The last great conflict between truth and error is but the final struggle of the long-standing controversy concerning the character of God." (GC 582.2)
📌 The ultimate purpose of prophecy is to vindicate God’s character and bring people into true worship.
🔹 SRod Insight:
"The understanding of God's character through prophecy is the key to preparing for the Kingdom." (2TG 24:19)
📌 Prophetic messages must lead to reformation, preparing God's people for the establishment of His Kingdom.
📖 Jeremiah 9:25-26
Prophetic Insight:
God warns that both the "circumcised" (professing believers) and the "uncircumcised" (unbelievers) will face judgment. This highlights the principle that mere outward profession of faith is insufficient—God requires heart transformation.
🔹 SOP Insight:
"Not one in twenty whose names are registered upon the church books are prepared to close their earthly history." (ChS 41.2)
📌 Many in the church are unready for judgment. Prophecy is meant to awaken the spiritually sleeping to their need for true conversion.
🔹 SRod Insight:
"Only those who are purified and reformed will be counted worthy to stand in the final crisis." (SRod, Vol. 2, p. 183)
📌 The prophetic message calls for a cleansing work among God's professed people, preparing them for the Loud Cry and the final events.
✅ Understanding prophecy is not merely about knowledge—it is about knowing God and being prepared for His Kingdom.
✅ The unsealing of prophecy is progressive and given to those who are spiritually ready to receive it.
✅ True prophetic understanding leads to reformation and obedience to God's revealed truth.
📢 Will you accept the call to deeper study and personal reformation through the prophetic Word?
