Success Comes When the Will Is Yielded to God.-- Every human being possessed of reason has power to choose the right. In every experience of life God's word to us is, "Choose you this day whom ye will serve." Joshua 24:15. Everyone may place his will on the side of the will of God, may choose to obey Him, and by thus linking himself with divine agencies, he may stand where nothing can force him to do evil. In every youth, every child, lies the power, by the help of God, to form a character of integrity and to live a life of usefulness. {CG 209.3}

Memory Text: Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. {1 Corinthians 10:11}

This week’s Sabbath School lesson, The True Joshua, aims to deepen our understanding of Christ as the greater Joshua—the One who leads His people into the final spiritual conquest and true rest. Prophetic Insight: The Divine Pattern in Types and Antitypes

Understanding Typology — Heaven’s Language of Prophecy

Biblical typology is a God-designed prophetic pattern in which persons, events, and institutions in the Old Testament become types—living symbols—of greater, future realities called antitypes. The type is the shadow; the antitype is the substance (Heb. 8:5). Through these shadows, God teaches the plan of salvation, reveals the work of Christ, and unfolds the final movements of earth’s history.

Typology as Heaven’s Teaching Method

The Scriptures show that types were not human inventions, but divinely ordained teaching tools:
Adam as a type of Christ—"Adam… is the figure of Him that was to come” (Rom. 5:14).
Israel’s Exodus is a prophetic blueprint for the end-time deliverance (1 Cor. 10:1–13).
The sanctuary and its services are “copies and shadows of heavenly things” (Heb. 8:5).
Historical events become prophetic instruction for the last generation (1 Cor. 10:11).

Typology is therefore prophecy in historical form—God writing the future through the past.

Christ the Center of All Biblical Typology

The Psalms and prophets describe specific events in Christ’s life centuries before they occurred:

David’s Experience Foreshadowing the Crucified Messiah

Psalm 22 contains vivid imagery of Christ:
“My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?” (Ps. 22:1; cf. Matt. 27:46)
“They pierced My hands and My feet” (Ps. 22:16)
“They part My garments… cast lots upon My vesture” (Ps. 22:18; cf. John 19:24)

David lived these experiences as type, but Christ lived them as antitype—the full reality.

The Promised Shoot and Righteous Branch

Jeremiah and Isaiah reveal the prophetic identity of Christ:
“A righteous Branch” raised to reign as King (Jer. 23:5)
“A Child… a Son… the government shall be upon His shoulder” (Isa. 9:6)
“A rod out of the stem of Jesse… the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him” (Isa. 11:1–5)

These prophecies form the messianic typological chain, showing that every Old Testament deliverer prefigured the One True Deliverer.

Christ’s atonement
His heavenly priesthood

Israel’s History Is Our Prophetic Mirror

“The experience of Israel… will be repeated by the people of God in these last days.” (RH, Feb. 18, 1890)
This aligns with Paul’s declaration that their history is an example for those “upon whom the ends of the world are come” (1 Cor. 10:11).

Thus, the end-time church must study Israel’s journey to understand:
the dangers of unbelief
the meaning of spiritual warfare
the nature of divine discipline
the pathway to victory

Typology and the Purification of God’s People

The Shepherd's Rod places typology at the heart of prophetic interpretation:

The Old Testament as a Blueprint for the Final Work

“Every episode in ancient Israel’s history was typical and therefore applicable to the church today.” (2SR 10–11)

For inspiration, types reveal the sequence and nature of last-day events, especially concerning:
The purification of the church (Ezek. 9)
The establishment of the kingdom (typified by Israel’s settlement in Canaan)
The restoration of God’s power among His people
The Loud Cry and final gathering

The Exodus as a Type of the Final Deliverance

“The Exodus movement, the Passover, the wilderness journey, and the settlement in the land are a perfect typology of the church’s journey from deliverance to restoration.” (1TG 8:24)

Just as ancient Israel was delivered from Egypt, the last-day church will be delivered from:
bondage to sin
spiritual confusion
oppression in the final crisis

And as Israel entered Canaan under Joshua, God’s people today will enter the antitypical kingdom experience under the True Joshua—Christ.

The Final Application: Typology and the People Who Live at the End

Typology is not mere academic study—it is the divine lens for end-time preparation.

Adam, Israel, and the Sanctuary all point to the last generation.

Through these models we learn:
victory is possible through surrender of the will
spiritual warfare is real (2 Cor. 10:3–5)
divine leadership is essential
obedience is the condition of entering the final rest (Heb. 4:1–11)

The Final Generation Experiences the Antitype

We live in the age where the shadows meet the substance:
antitypical Day of Atonement
antitypical purification of the church
antitypical conquest under Christ
antitypical exodus to the restored kingdom
antitypical deliverance leading to glory
Typology unfolds the prophetic journey from Egypt to Canaan—from earth to the kingdom.

Consider the Following

— Paul – and other biblical authors – use the word “type” to refer to a historical figure or event

that represents something or someone from his own time and/or the future (called an

“antitype”).

— For example, Romans 5:14 speaks of Adam as a type [“figure” in NKJ] “of him who was to

come,” that is, of Jesus—the antitype.

— On many occasions, we find in the Old Testament an indication that specific characters or

events are types of something to come. Let's look at two examples:

We are the people “upon whom the ends of the world are come” (1 Cor. 10:11).
To us, the types speak with final force:
Surrender the will, follow the True Joshua, and prepare for the last great deliverance.

Typology Classes — The Structure of God’s Prophetic Blueprint

Typology appears in Scripture through three principal classes, each revealing deeper layers of prophetic truth:
1. PERSON Typology
Individuals whose lives prefigure Christ or His end-time people.
2. EVENT Typology
Historical events that foreshadow final movements.
3. INSTITUTIONAL / OBJECT Typology
The sanctuary, temple, sacrifices, priesthood—visible systems that portray the plan of redemption.
Together, these three categories form a comprehensive prophetic language, allowing God to speak through both history and symbolism.

The Antitype Fulfilled in Christ — “Out of Egypt Have I Called My Son”

Matthew 2:15 reveals the dual application of typology:
The type: Israel called out of Egypt (Hos. 11:1)
The antitype: Christ called out of Egypt after Herod’s death

Why this matters prophetically:
Israel’s national experience becomes the pattern for Christ, and Christ becomes the pattern for the end-time church (Gal. 6:16).
Thus, the Exodus is a threefold typology:
Israel the type
Christ the antitype
The church the final antitype (antitypical Israel)
Christ’s personal history recapitulates Israel’s national history, proving that God Himself interprets typology through Jesus.

SOP Insight — Christ, the True Temple, and the Spiritual Israel

Ellen White confirms these typological classes:
1. Christ as the True Temple
“Christ was the antitypical temple, the great center of the entire Jewish economy.” (DA 161)
Thus:
John 2:21 — “He spoke of the temple of His body”
Matt. 26:61 — “I am able to destroy the temple…”
The physical temple was the type; Christ was the antitype.

2. The Church as the Antitypical Temple
Paul extends the application:
“Ye are God’s temple” (1 Cor. 3:16–17)
“I will dwell in them” (2 Cor. 6:16)
The SOP identifies the church as:
“God’s fortress”
“The theater of His grace”
“The temple of the living God” (AA 11–12)
Therefore:
Literal temple → Christ → the church → the final overcomers
This is typology progressing toward its climax.

3. The Call Out of Spiritual Egypt
Revelation 18:4 echoes the Exodus:
“Come out of her, My people.”
Ellen White consistently applies this as:
A separation from false worship
A preparation for the sealing
A call before the final crisis (GC 604)
Christ coming out of Egypt is the pattern of His people coming out of spiritual Babylon at the end.

Typology and the Final Gathering of Israel

The Rod emphasizes typology as the key to understanding prophecies for the last days:
1. The Church in the Time of the Harvest

Inspiration teaches that:
Old Testament Israel → type
The SDA Church → antitype
The purified church → final antitype
“The Exodus movement was a type of the church in the time of the Loud Cry.” (1TG 8:24)
Thus, “Out of Egypt” in Matthew 2:15 becomes a prophetic marker:
Christ called out
The church called out of spiritual Babylon
The 144,000 delivered (Rev. 7:4–8; 14)

2. The True Temple in the Antitype

Inspiration emphasizes the final application:
The temple of Revelation 11:19 (heavenly)
The temple in Revelation 3:12 (victorious saints)
The temple in Revelation 21:22 (“the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple”)
He teaches a progression:
Earthly temple → Christ → Church → Overcomers → God’s eternal dwelling

This supports Paul’s typology:
“You are the temple… God dwells in you.”
The final antitype is the kingdom church, sealed and empowered.

3. Separation Through Typology
The Rod interprets:
2 Cor. 6:17 — “Come out from among them”
Rev. 18:4 — “Come out of her, My people”

as applying to the purification of the church (Ezek. 9) before the loud cry.
Typology shows:

Israel → Christ → Church → purified remnant

Typology points toward a distinct, end-time body of believers who follow the “True Joshua” into the promised land.

The Culmination of All Types — God Dwelling With His People

John 1:14 says:
“The Word became flesh and dwelt (tabernacled) among us.”
This is the ultimate typology:
The tabernacle → a type
Christ dwelling among men → antitype
God dwelling eternally with the redeemed → final antitype (Rev. 21:3)

In Revelation 21:22:
“There is no temple… for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple.”

Typology reaches its everlasting fulfillment when:
God
His Christ
His people
His kingdom
are unified forever.

Typology is therefore the prophetic map of salvation—a divine pattern unfolding from Genesis to Revelation, from type to antitype, from shadow to substance.

“The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him.” (Deuteronomy 18:15)

JOSHUA AS A TYPE — THE DIVINE PATTERN OF A DELIVERER

The Bible positions Joshua not merely as a military leader but as a prophetic type of Christ, the One who would complete the work Moses began.
Joshua’s name in Hebrew, Yehoshua, means “Yahweh saves.”
Its Greek form is Iēsous — Jesus.

Thus the typology is embedded in the very name God chose for Israel’s deliverer.

Joshua’s work, character, and mission prefigure Christ’s end-time leadership, revealing how God brings His people from bondage into the promised inheritance.

THE BURNING BUSH AND HOLY GROUND — CHRIST REVEALED IN TYPE

1. The Angel of the LORD Appears (Exod. 3:1–2)
The “Angel of the LORD” is identified in Scripture and SOP as Christ Himself:
“Christ was the Angel of the covenant.” (PP 366)
“It was Christ who spoke to Moses from the burning bush.” (DA 24)
Joshua meets this same Being:

2. The Captain of the Lord’s Host (Josh. 5:15)
The command “Take off your sandals… the place is holy” mirrors Exod. 3:5 exactly.
Thus the One speaking to Joshua at Jericho is the pre-incarnate Christ, confirming that:
The Joshua-Christ typology is Christ-centered from the beginning.
Christ appears with Joshua, showing that the type points forward to the victorious, conquering Messiah.

THE TRANSITION OF LEADERSHIP — FROM MOSES TO JOSHUA, FROM LAW TO GRACE

Moses represents the law; Joshua represents Christ.
Moses brought Israel to the border.
Joshua brought them into the land.
Likewise:
The law reveals sin (Rom. 3:20).
Christ brings victory and entrance into the promised rest (Heb. 4:8–11).

Thus:

Moses → conviction
Joshua → salvation and conquest
This pattern is foundational to the plan of redemption.

JOSHUA COMMISSIONED (Josh. 1:1–3) — A TYPE OF CHRIST’S MISSION

God’s charge to Joshua mirrors the Father’s commission to Christ:
1. Lead God’s people
2. Conquer the enemy
3. Bring them into inheritance
Compare Christ’s own mission:
“The Son… came to seek and save” (Luke 19:10)
“I am the Way” (John 14:6) — the path into the heavenly Canaan
“All things have been delivered to Me by My Father” (Luke 10:22)
Joshua’s divine empowerment is a type of Christ’s anointing (Matt. 3:17; Isa. 42:1).

THE SPY MISSION (Num. 13; Josh. 2:1) — FAITH VS. FEAR AS A PROPHETIC SIGNAL

Joshua and Caleb stood for faith while the others represented unbelief.
This is prophetically repeated in the last days:
Faithful remnant (Rev. 7:4; 14:1–5)
Unbelieving majority (Rev. 3:14–17)
The INSPIRATION draws this parallel:
“As ancient Israel failed because of unbelief, so modern Israel will not enter the promised land unless purified.”

Joshua’s faith prefigures the 144,000, the spiritual leadership in the antitypical harvest.

DEUTERONOMY 18:15–19 — THE PROPHET LIKE UNTO MOSES

This prophecy, quoted in Acts 3:22–26 and Acts 7:37, points directly to Christ.
But Joshua stands in the intermediate role between Moses and Christ, representing:
A prophet
A leader
A deliverer
A commander
An entry-giver into the promised land
Joshua’s life is the shadow, Christ is the substance, and the end-time church is the final antitype.

This sequence reveals a multi-layered typology:

Moses (Law) → Joshua (Type of Christ) → Jesus (The Antitype) → End-Time Joshua-Movement (Final Application)

CHRIST, THE TRUE JOSHUA, REVEALED IN THE GOSPELS

1. “The Word became flesh” (John 1:14)
The One who appeared to Moses and Joshua now appears in human form.

2. “No one has seen God… the Son has revealed Him” (John 1:18)
Christ is the Revealer, as Joshua was to Israel.

3. “I am the Way” (John 14:6)
Joshua led Israel the way into Canaan; Jesus leads us the Way to eternal life.

4. “You teach the way of God truthfully” (Matt. 22:16)
The True Joshua perfectly displays the will and character of the Father.

SOP INSIGHT — JOSHUA AS A SHADOW OF CHRIST

Ellen White gives several profound connections:
“Joshua was a type of Christ, for he led the people into the earthly Canaan, as Christ will lead His people into the heavenly.”

Consider the Following
Joshua as a type

— Joshua partially fulfilled Moses' prophecy concerning a second prophet who would lead the people (Deut. 18:15-19).

— Like Moses, Joshua received direct messages from God; he celebrated Passover; he crossed the waters; he saw the Angel of the Lord; his outstretched hand brought victory; he invited the people to remain faithful after his death; etc.

— While the manna began to fall under Moses, it ceased under Joshua. Furthermore, Joshua carried out the instructions regarding the division of the land and the cities of refuge that Moses had given.

— But the people understood that Moses' prophecy extended beyond Joshua ( John 1:21). Thus, both Moses and Joshua become types of the true antitype who fully realized the prophecy given to Moses concerning "the Prophet": Jesus (Acts 3:22-26)

CONCLUSION — JOSHUA, CHRIST, AND THE END-TIME PEOPLE

Joshua’s life is a prophetic model of:

Divine leadership
Purification before conquest
Faith vs. fear
The promised inheritance
Christ’s work as the True Joshua
The final movement under Christ’s authority
Joshua stands as the connecting link between Moses and Christ, between type and antitype, between Canaan below and Canaan above.

His mission is fulfilled:
Historically in ancient Israel
Spiritually in Christ
Prophetically in the end-time church
Thus Joshua is not only a type of Christ—
He is a prophetic template for the final deliverance of God’s people.

Thus saith the LORD, In an acceptable time have I heard thee, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee: and I will preserve thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to inherit the desolate heritages. {Isaiah 49:8}

CHRIST – THE GREAT ANTITYPICAL JOSHUA

In the divine plan of salvation, the Old Testament figure Joshua stands as one of the clearest prophetic types of Christ. As Joshua led Israel into the earthly Canaan, Christ—the “True Joshua”—leads spiritual Israel into the heavenly rest and the final antitypical Kingdom.

1. Isaiah’s Servant Prophecy and the Mission of Christ

Isaiah 49:8 declares that the Servant—the Messiah—is given “as a covenant for the people”, to restore, preserve, and reestablish the inheritance. This is precisely the mission that Joshua foreshadowed but never fulfilled completely (Heb. 4:8).

The antitypical Joshua does not merely lead into land;
He leads into salvation, restoration, inheritance, and eternal dominion.

2. New Testament Confirmation

Hebrews 3–4 identifies Jesus as the One who brings what Joshua could not:
the final spiritual rest, the perfected Sabbath rest, the Kingdom Rest of the redeemed.

THE BAPTISM, TEMPTATION, AND VICTORY OF THE TRUE JOSHUA

1. The Anointing at the Jordan

When Jesus was baptized (Matt. 3:13–17), the Father authenticated Him with the words:
“This is My beloved Son”—echoing Psalm 2:7 and Isaiah 42:1.

Here, Christ begins His public ministry just as Joshua began his leadership after Moses’ work closed (Josh. 1:1–3).

2. The Wilderness Victory

Where ancient Israel fell in the wilderness (1 Cor. 10:1–13), Christ overcame (Matt. 4:1–11).
Joshua’s first work was to overcome hostile Canaanite powers;
Christ’s first work was to conquer the spiritual powers of darkness.

His victory in the wilderness guaranteed victory for His people.

THE TRUE JOSHUA AND THE POST-RESURRECTION COMMISSION

After His resurrection, Christ appears for 40 days (Acts 1:3)—mirroring Israel’s 40 years and Joshua’s preparatory leadership.
He ascends as the victorious Captain (Eph. 4:8),
entering the heavenly sanctuary as our High Priest and Mediator (Heb. 9:15).

Christ is thus:
Prophet like Moses (Acts 3:22–26)
Captain like Joshua
Priest like Melchizedek
King in David’s line (Ps. 2:7)

He embodies all roles, all types, all shadows.

SOP — CHRIST AS THE ANTITYPICAL LEADER OF THE FINAL GENERATION

Ellen White consistently identifies Christ as the One who leads His people into the final inheritance:
“Christ is the Captain of our salvation.” (DA 785)
He leads *“step by step into the heavenly Canaan.” (PP 578)
“All the typical offerings pointed to Christ.” (GC 418)
“The types and shadows met their antitype in Him.” (DA 165)

The same divine Presence that guided Joshua now guides the remnant Church in the final conflict.

JOSHUA AS A LIVING TYPE OF THE FUTURE KINGDOM

Inspiration further expands this typological framework:

1. Joshua and the Purification of the Church

The SROD presents Joshua as a type of leadership during the purification and reorganization of God’s Church (Zech. 3; SRod, Vol. 1, pp. 46–48).
The True Joshua—Christ Himself—is the One who:
removes the filthy garments
rebukes Satan
restores purity
reestablishes the sanctified ministry

2. Joshua as a Type of the Kingdom Movement

In the final application, Christ as the antitypical Joshua leads the purified church into the antitypical promised land—the restored Kingdom before the close of probation (Ezek. 37:14, 25; Micah 4:1–3; Isa. 2:1–4).

3. The Antitypical Conquest

Just as ancient Joshua overthrew the Canaanite system, the True Joshua overthrows spiritual Babylon and leads His people to victory (Rev. 18:4; Isa. 49:8).

Thus, the Rod shows that the Joshua typology extends to:
Christ as Chief Leader
The purified remnant as the army of the Lord
The coming Kingdom as the inheritance restored

THE ACCEPTABLE TIME — THE FINAL CALL

Isaiah 49:8 reveals an “acceptable time”—a prophetic moment when God works decisively for His people.

In the time of the end:
Christ is given as a covenant
He preserves a remnant
He leads them into restored heritage
He brings deliverance from spiritual Egypt and Babylon
He reveals Himself as the glorious Captain of salvation
This prophecy reaches its climactic fulfillment in the final generation— “upon whom the ends of the world are come” (1 Cor. 10:11).

The antitype of Joshua

— The objective of the wars led by Joshua was to establish the Israelites in the Promised Land. Isaiah presents the work of the Messiah as consisting of assigning the “desolate inheritances [to his people]” (Isa. 49:8, NIV), using the same terminology as the book of

Joshua.

— In what sense is the life and work of Joshua (as a type) reflected in the life and work of Jesus (the antitype)?

(1) After his baptism in the Jordan, Jesus fought against the forces of evil

(2) He began his work after 40 days in the desert

(3) He defeated the enemy on the cross

(4) He gives us victory over our spiritual enemies

(5) He gives us true rest

(6) He assigns us an incorruptible inheritance

🌟 Summary Thought

Joshua was only a shadow.
Christ is the Substance.
Joshua led Israel into Canaan.
Christ leads the Remnant into the final Kingdom Rest.

And the call of God still stands:
“Today, if you will hear His voice, harden not your hearts.”
(Heb. 3:7)

Let all who wait for the restoration of the Kingdom follow the True Joshua— our Captain, our High Priest, our King— into the inheritance prepared “from the foundation of the world.”

Joshua and Us

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:12)

JOSHUA’S EXPERIENCE IS A PROPHETIC PATTERN FOR THE FINAL GENERATION

Just as Joshua led Israel through warfare, purification, and inheritance, so the remnant in the last days are called to engage in a parallel spiritual conflict—a war not of swords and spears, but of truth versus deception, purity versus apostasy, allegiance versus rebellion.

Joshua’s record is not ancient history;
it is a prophetic mirror of our own spiritual journey—
a type of the Church under the leadership of the True Joshua, Christ.

THE WARFARE OF JOSHUA FORESHADOWS OUR SPIRITUAL WARFARE

1. The Christian Soldier’s Calling (1 Tim. 1:18; 2 Tim. 4:7)
Paul links the Christian life to a military commission:
Fight the good fight.”
“Endure hardness as a good soldier.”
“I have fought a good fight… I have kept the faith.”
As Joshua warred against earthly Canaanites,
we war against spiritual Canaanites—powers of darkness (Eph. 6:12; 2 Cor. 10:3–5).

2. Our Weapons Are Spiritual
Paul declares:
“The weapons of our warfare are not carnal…” (2 Cor. 10:4)
but mighty through God to:
pull down strongholds
cast down imaginations
bring every thought captive to Christ
Just as Joshua needed heavenly direction to conquer Jericho,
we need divine power to conquer the internal Jericho of pride, unbelief, and self-will.

ENTERING THE FINAL REST — THE ANTITYPICAL CANAAN

1. The Rest Still Remains (Heb. 4:9–11)
Joshua of old “did not give them rest” (Heb. 4:8).
The true rest—the Kingdom Rest—awaits the remnant.

Thus the call of Hebrews is urgent:
“Let us labor to enter that rest.”
No one enters casually.
Like ancient Israel, many delay (Josh. 18:3).

2. The Inheritance Reserved for Us (1 Pet. 1:4; Col. 3:24)

Peter calls it:
“an inheritance incorruptible… reserved in heaven.”
Colossians calls it:
the reward of the inheritance.”
Revelation shows the inheritance restored on earth (Rev. 21:3), the purified earth where God dwells with His people.

Joshua’s land inheritance is only the shadow; the restored Kingdom is the final substance.

SOP — THE WORK OF THE FINAL GENERATION

Ellen White frequently applies Joshua’s experience to the remnant church:

1. The Spiritual Battle
“We are engaged in a warfare with the powers of darkness.” (RH, July 13, 1886)
“The strongholds of Satan will be overthrown.” (PK 587)
2. The Delay in Possessing the Promise
Joshua’s rebuke—“How long are ye slack to possess the land?” (Josh. 18:3)—mirrors EGW’s lament:

The final Joshua work includes:

Leading the purified remnant in the last-day conquest

2. The Antitype of the Land Division
Joshua dividing the land typifies the restoration of the Kingdom and the establishment of God’s people in their prophetic assignment (Ezek. 37:14, 25; Micah 4:1–3).

3. The Remnant Army
The purified church becomes the army of the Lord, prepared to give the loud cry (Rev. 18:1–4) and to stand on Mount Zion (Rev. 14:1).

4. The Last Conflict
Revelation 20:9 speaks of the final conflict against the saints surrounding the “beloved city”— the culmination of the great controversy.
Joshua’s victories prefigure the ultimate defeat of sin, Satan, and the enemies of truth.

THE FINAL CALL — THE ANTITYPICAL “POSSESS THE LAND!”

Joshua’s question echoes prophetically today:
“How long are ye slack to possess the land?” (Josh. 18:3)

For the final generation, this means:
How long will we delay full surrender?
How long until we put on the whole armor of God? (Eph. 6:10–12)
How long until the remnant reflects the glory of Christ? (2 Cor. 3:18)
How long until the gospel of the Kingdom is carried to all nations?

The call of God is urgent:
Stand in your lot. Take your inheritance. Follow the True Joshua.

Consider the Following
Joshua as a type of the Church

— JOSHUA AND THE CHURCH

(1) Today we have a battle to fight, in which we are led by our “Joshua”, who equips us with the necessary armor (Eph. 6:10-12).

(2) Furthermore, he already assigns us an inheritance, and fills us with spiritual blessings (Eph. 1:3, 11).

— JOSHUA AND THE END TIMES

(1) But the complete typological fulfillment of Joshua will be at the end, when all the hosts of evil are destroyed, and we take full possession of our inheritance: a land where we can live in confidence (Rev. 20:7-9; Ezek. 28:26).

(2) Until that time comes, let us grow in grace as Joshua did, allowing God to transform us to become a little more like Him each day.

We are the soldiers, the conquerors, the inheritors.
Christ is our Captain, leading us into the final rest and the eternal inheritance.

FURTHER PROPHETIC INSIGHTS AND STUDY

A Summary and Deepening of the Week’s Prophetic Themes

THE TRUE JOSHUA—THE CLIMAX OF BIBLICAL TYPOLOGY

All week we traced how Joshua, the successor of Moses, prefigures Christ—the Captain of our salvation
(Heb. 2:10; Heb. 4:8–11).

Every major act of Joshua—crossing the Jordan, conquering enemies, dividing the land, calling the tribes to decision—foreshadows the climactic work of Christ for the last generation, the people “upon whom the ends of the world are come” (1 Cor. 10:11).

Typology reaches its highest point when:
Joshua (type) brings Israel into Canaan
Christ (antitype) brings the remnant into the Kingdom
Joshua’s battles (type) represent the spiritual battles of the end-time church
Joshua’s land division (type) points to the restoration of God’s Kingdom (Isa. 2:1–4; Ezek. 37:25)
This final restoration is the prophetic center toward which all types converge.

THE TWO GREAT RESTS — EARTHLY CANAAN AND ETERNAL REST

Hebrews 3–4 clarifies that Joshua of old did not give the true rest (Heb. 4:8).
This means a greater rest remains for the people of God.

1. The Rest of Grace (Present Experience)

Found through:
Obedience
Trust
Victory over sin
A life yielded to the True Joshua

2. The Rest of the Kingdom (Future Reality)

Foretold by:
Isaiah 11:1–9

Ezekiel 36–37

This rest is not merely symbolic—it is the restoration of God’s dominion, the antitypical inheritance prefigured by Joshua.

Ellen White emphasizes both rests:

“To us is offered a rest similar to that which was offered to Israel.” (HP 67)

And the Rod harmonizes:

The “rest” will be realized when the purified church stands in the Kingdom to finish the Gospel work. (SRod, Vol. 1; Timely Greetings)

THE FINAL CONFLICT — THE TRUE JOSHUA LEADS HIS ARMY

The apostle declares our battle is not against flesh and blood (Eph. 6:12).
This final conflict is fought on three fronts:

1. Internal — the spiritual Jericho walls of pride, resistance, self-will (2 Cor. 10:3–5)
These must fall by divine power, not human force.

2. External — the spiritual Canaanites: deception, false worship, worldly allurements (Rev. 16–18)

3. Cosmic — the dragon’s war against the remnant (Rev. 12:17)

This is why Joshua’s charge is prophetic for the remnant:

“Be strong and of a good courage… for the Lord thy God is with thee.” (Josh. 1:9)

SOP — FINAL PREPARATION AND PURIFICATION

Ellen White connects Joshua’s leadership to the preparation for the sealing and the loud cry:
1. Purification
“A crisis is just before us, when the church will be sifted.” (5T 80)

2. Obedience
“Victory is not gained by idle words, but by resolute obedience.” (DA 667)

3. Whole Surrender
“When the will is surrendered to God, the rest follows naturally.” (MH 176)

This echoes the week’s meditation:
Success comes when the will is yielded to God.

The True Joshua cannot lead a people who are only half surrendered.

THE KINGDOM AND THE FINAL GATHERING

The cleansing of the church
The removal of the unfaithful
The standing up of the purified ministry

Just as ancient Joshua divided Canaan to the tribes, the antitypical Joshua (Christ) restores the inheritance to the tribes of spiritual Israel (Ezek. 47–48; SRod 1 & 2).

3. The Loud Cry and the Final Conquest

The purified remnant—God’s army under the True Joshua— proclaims the loud cry of Rev. 18:1–4, calling all who will hear to come out of Babylon.

The final result:
The gospel goes with power
The world is warned
The harvest is gathered
The controversy closes

HOW LONG WILL WE DELAY? — THE ECHO OF JOSHUA 18:3

Josh. 18:3 is God’s piercing question to the final generation:

“How long are ye slack to possess the land?”

This question is spiritual and prophetic:
How long until we fully surrender?
How long until we put on the whole armor of God?
How long until we unite with Christ in the finishing of the work?
How long until we allow Christ to remove every Jericho wall of resistance?
How long until we let the True Joshua lead completely?

FINAL APPEAL — FOLLOW THE TRUE JOSHUA INTO THE FINAL REST

The entire week’s study leads to this climax:

Christ is the True Joshua.
We are the final Israel.
The Kingdom Rest is near.
The battle is spiritual but victory is assured.
The inheritance awaits the yielded.

The same God who commanded Joshua says today:

“Be strong.”
“Be courageous.”
“Go forward.”
“Possess the land.”

Let the remnant arise and follow the True Joshua until we enter the everlasting rest,
the restored Kingdom,
and the presence of God forever.

“The Israel of God, journeying to the heavenly Canaan, have a Captain who needed no human teaching to prepare Him for His mission as a divine leader; yet He was made perfect through sufferings; and “in that He Himself hath suffered being tempted, He is able to succor them that are tempted.” Hebrews 2:10, 18.
