SS25-Q3-L4-The Plagues

July 19-25, 2025

Sabbath Afternoon–July 19, 2025

Scripture Reading for the Week:

Exod. 7:8-10:29; Num. 33:4; Rom. 1:24-32; Ps. 104:27-28; Isa. 28:2-12-17; Isa. 44:9-10; 12-17

Thought for Meditation

For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. Revelation 22:18, 19. {CSA 68.3}

And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead? To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. Isaiah 8:19, 20. {CSA 68.4}

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. Acts 17:11. {CSA 68.5}

The Lord has sent His people much instruction, line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little, and there a little. Little heed is given to the Bible, and the Lord has given a lesser light to lead men and women to the greater light. {CSA 68.6}

Memory Verse

"So the heart of Pharaoh was hard; neither would he let the children of Israel go, as the LORD had spoken by Moses" (Exodus 9:35)

🔎 Purpose of the Lesson:

To reveal how God’s judgments, expressed through the plagues upon Egypt, served to expose the folly of false worship, hardhearted rebellion, and the powerlessness of idolatry, while simultaneously affirming God's authority, justice, and His power to deliver His covenant people.

Supporting Elements for this Purpose:

This lesson calls attention to the spiritual dangers of resisting God's revealed will, the importance of obedience, and the certainty of divine justice. It also shows how judgment can coexist with mercy, as God sends warnings before executing punishment. The plagues are not just historical events, but prophetic types of the final judgments that will fall upon modern “spiritual Egypt” (see Revelation 16), emphasizing the need to heed God's message today.
