Scripture Reading for the Week:
Exod. 5:1-23; Rev. 11:8; Exod. 6:1-13; Ps. 73:23-26; 2 Cor. 6:16; Exod. 6:28-7:7
Thought for Meditation
At midnight "there was a great cry in Egypt: for there was not a house where there was not one dead." All the first-born in the land, "from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle" had been smitten by the destroyer. Throughout the vast realm of Egypt the pride of every household had been laid low. The shrieks and wails of the mourners filled the air. King and courtiers, with blanched faces and trembling limbs, stood aghast at the overmastering horror. Pharaoh remembered how he had once exclaimed, "Who is Jehovah, that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I know not Jehovah, neither will I let Israel go." Now, his heaven-daring pride humbled in the dust, he "called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, Rise up, and get you forth from among my people, both ye and the children of Israel; and go, serve the Lord, as ye have said. Also take your flocks and your herds, as ye have said. . . . And be gone; and bless me also." The royal counselors also and the people entreated the Israelites to depart "out of the land in haste; for they said, We be all dead men." {PP 279.4} Patriarchs and Prophets (1890)
Memory Verse
"Afterward Moses and Aaron went in and told Pharaoh, ‘Thus says the LORD God of Israel: "Let My people go, that they may hold a feast to Me in the wilderness." ’ And Pharaoh said, ‘Who is the LORD, that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, nor will I let Israel go’" (Exodus 5:1-2)
📖 WEEKLY THEME: Rough Start – God’s Providence Through Delay, Opposition, and Preparation
The account of Moses and Aaron's demand before Pharaoh is not just history—it is prophecy in type. Egypt symbolizes the world under Satan's dominion. Pharaoh represents the resisting power of spiritual Babylon. The cry, “Let My people go,” reverberates through time to our day, when God calls for the deliverance of His remnant from spiritual bondage.
“Who is the LORD, that I should obey His voice?” (Ex. 5:2) — This question forms the spiritual crisis of every age. The last conflict will again be about recognizing God’s authority and obeying His voice (Rev. 14:7–9).
🌿 Spirit of Prophecy Insight:
“The Hebrews had expected to obtain their liberty without any special trial of their faith or any suffering. But they were not yet prepared for deliverance. They had little faith in God...” – Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 260
🔥 Shepherd’s Rod Insight:
“The deliverance of ancient Israel from Egypt is a type of the deliverance of spiritual Israel from the modern confusion (Babylon).” – 1SR 64-65
📝 Purpose of the Study
To help us understand that although the deliverance of God’s people may not begin smoothly, and may appear as failure or delay at first, the Lord uses opposition, resistance, and human weakness to reveal His power, refine His leaders, and prepare His people for a greater deliverance. The experience of Moses in Egypt is a prophetic type of the end-time deliverance of spiritual Israel.
