In this Architecture Design Project, “Urban Village” is the theme. “Urban Village” - a combination of traditional Malay village and urban development, one of the main elements of the design project that needs to be considered is the way to convey information using abstract ideas in the process of designing a contemporary building while dealing with the fire safety requirement, technology, cultural context, sustainability and environmental impact. The urban village theme purposely required students to plan a master plan of the proposed site, including some other facility buildings and activities that will happen in the proposed site. It also needs students to design a residential building (apartment) as it is the fundamental part in the urban village.
The planning of the master plan and its programme is based on the concept of ‘rejuvenation’. Rejuvenation means the action or process of giving new energy or vigour to something. The proposed site originally houses the Malay village which still exists until the present day. Therefore, the planning is carefully thought through without forgetting its characteristics and traditions while designing a fresh and contemporary urban village.
As the elements of Malay houses are used as the concept of the apartments, thus it has been studied and made as a guidance to brainstorming ideas. A Malay house has its uniqueness in the aspect of art namely; the art of space layout and the art of adapting building components to the local climate.
