The new development of Kampung Sinjan offers resident the new opportunity to generate alternative income for the community under this Urban Village Project (UVP). The planning to propose a urban village project to assist the resident of Kampung Sinjan and nearby local communities by revitalizing the Sarawak River's economy, for instances, through rising unemployment possibilities and the potential to seize economic opportunities through tourism. Besides, proposed site located at a very strategic location which is near to administrative center and tourism centre. The existing land use of Kampung Sinjan is primarily to residential. The proposed mater plan of this Urban Village are showing the proposed zoning in the site which including residential, commercial, public spaces and open spaces. To expand the site, 10m of reclamation land has been proposed and sheet piles is built along the river bank to ensure the site safety. Land use strategies is aim to revitalizing the livelihood of the community, improve the environment on the surrounding of land use, boost the economic by placing the commercial area with open spaces and residential close proximately. The open spaces promote the pedestrian friendly for community
In addition, this project focuses on the role of architecture and programmes to preserve and promoted the “Malay Culture” to the outsiders. The strategies on programme development and activities on site were not only focused on how the community generate alternative income but also focuses on social and culture, educational, economic and tourism in which involve local community and outsiders. The original name of Kampung Sinjan also to be preserve because it has a significant historical value as the site also surrounded by others historical building such as Kampung Heritage (Masjid Besar Kuching and Madrasah Orang Melayu Islam) and Historical Monument Heritage (Square Tower and Sarawak State Legislative Assembly Building). Urban Village Project (UVP) development cover 2891 metres square (7.15acres). UVP aims to improve the ability to design a complex of residential area in an urban village scheme as part of the proposed development. There are 80 unit building apartment which divided into 62 residential unit and 18 tourist unit integrated with Urban Farming and Open spaces. The masterplan also effectively shows the strong and important integration between residential apartment, urban farming area, commercial building, administrative offices, Jetty Kampung Surau and open spaces, It create social space for the community to interact and socialize in which to avoid failure interaction between neighbourhood
As the conclusion, this mini thesis focuses on the development of masterplan, redefine the proposed buildings, facilities and activities programme. The integration and relationship of every spaces is one of the crucial part in the design process. It is important to design a resident apartment that is more than simply a matter of providing shelter for household, but also emphasized in creating environment that corresponds to the need for human dignity and the facilities and enriches the daily practices of human life. Besides, the level of society can be classify into two main category which is middle- upper income and lower income. This element also been take as priority key in the design procecss because the targeted end-user (client) for this thesis is the local resident from Kampung Sinjan. The idea on how the local resident can generate their own income is one of the anchor objective and goal in this mini thesis project besides to preserve and promoting the “Malay Culture” to the tourist. The proposed program also not only support in term of economics but also for social development and edecutational purposes for the community. In addition, the overall design of this project also shows and emphasized on the identity of Malay traditonal house and the behaviour and lifestyle of Melayu people such as exhange food with neighbour (Bertukar lauk), staying overnight (Berambeh) and etc.
