The precedent study is based on a riverside/ boardwalk activity at an urban area in Malaysia or overseas. Students are to study in detail the space planning and design elements of the building/ linkages, discuss the interesting features of this development and demonstrate the understanding of architectural elements, environmental factors or the existing site context that contribute to the success/failure of the design.
The intention was to apply the concept of open shelter where emphasis was being put on convergence, permeability as well as retainment, much like how a regular place of shelter functions due to the proposed building being a transportation hub while also having the first floor serve as an exhibition space.
The programmes introduced within the proposed building are that of the transportation hub which does not only encourage the use of the Kuching Hydrogen buses along with the use of public transportation within the city, the hub also encourages users to support local boatmen residing within the area by utilising their boating services. The upper floor of the main massing however, offers tourists as well as users commuting to the site the local heritage and history of Petanak or Blacksmith Road with the offered programme of the first floor being that of an exhibition space.
Much thought was put into ensuring the final form of the building presents a sense of modernity into the dormant site in order to bring about and attract potential users. However, the incorporation of modern architectural features and elements were introduced along with a balance of local architecture with the use of the timber screening along the main massing.
Petanak in itself is a pioneer of industrialization, however so today, the site has reached a state of being dormant despite the regular commute of blue and white collar workers into the vicinity. The site itself lacks any sort of placemaking that could possibly attract more potential users, especially the youth, into the site.
This digital playscapes aims to provide users with a platform that offers digital programme spaces while still encouraging physical activities among family groups hence blurring the boundary line which usually separates activities intended for the youth and activities intended for the generation above, allowing families to come together and enjoy digital gaming as a group.
Following the concept of a regular jungle gym, users are given the chance to experience the traditional jungle gym through a series of digitized recreation where the interior planning of the centre with its semi transparent walls allows the users to identify a clear boundary of their space for a sense of privacy as well as public health security due to the current situation of the pandemic while also allowing users to gain a sense of playing together within the same structure.
