She is a New Zealand film director, screenwriter and producer.

She has mainly worked in Australia and the United States.

She was born on April 30th, 1954 in Wellington, New Zealand.

Her mother was an actress and her father a theatre and opera director. Campion grew up in the world of New Zealand theatre. Her parents founded the New Zealand Players theatre group.

In 1981 she began studying at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School, where she made several short films, and graduated in 1984.

Her first short film, Peel (1982) won the Palme D'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1986.

She co-wrote and directed her first film, Sweetie in 1989, and she won several international awards in the USA and Australia.

Another important film was An Angel At My Table (1990), which won seven prizes, including the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1990. It was also awarded prizes at the Toronto and Berlin Film Festivals.

Her acclaimed film The piano (1993) won the Palme D'Or for best director at Cannes Film Festival. She became the first woman in history to win the prestigious award.

Campion is the second of five women ever nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director which she received for directing The Piano, for which she also won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

She has continued directing films, short films, documentaries and miniseries for TV.

Campion's films tend to gravitate around themes of gender politics, such as seduction and female sexual power.

Some critics have said that she writes roles for beautiful women with soul, will and strength, not victims or objects.
