Toyen, born Marie Čermínová, was a Czech painter, drafter and illustrator and a member of the surrealist movement. She left her family at sixteen and it has been speculated it was due to her sympathy towards anarchism. In 1923, she was reborn when her new name was given to her, in an attempt to de-gender her.
