RACHEL CARSON

Rachel Louise Carson was born on May 27th, 1907 and died on April 14th, 1964. She was a marine biologist and an American conservationist. She wrote books and documents and contributed to the initiation of environmental awareness.

She wrote three books about the life in the oceans, these books were highly praised and bestsellers.

Carson had special attention for the conservation, especially to the problems caused by the synthetic pesticides. The result of her investigation was her book Silent Spring (1962) that raised awareness in the American society about the consequences of some chemicals. There was a change in national policy about pesticides and she got a ban on some of these. Finally she inspired the creation of the environmental protection agency of The United States and she was posthumously awarded the presidential Medal of Freedom.

Carson's work had a powerful impact on the environmental movement.

She was also influential on the rise of eco-feminism and on many feminist scientists.
