Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi (19 November 1917 – 31 October 1984)

She married Feroze Gandhi from whom she took the last name.

She was the first and, to date, the only female Prime Minister of India.

She was leader of the Congress Party from 1959 to 1984, and actively participated in the fight for the independence of India.

She said “To liberate herself, women must feel free, not to rival men, but free in their abilities and personality”.

During her rule she developed an economic policy oriented to industrialize the country and supported the independence of Bangladesh.

During her second term in office she repressed Sikh nationalism, this movement wanted a confessional state and to make Panjab independent.

On October 31, going to an interview, she was assassinated by her own bodyguards who were part of the Sikh minority.
