KATHRINE SWITZER

La K, pertenece a Kathrine Switzer (EEUU, 1947 - ) y es que está mujer revolucionó el mundo del deporte. Resulta que hace no mucho tiempo, se daba por sentado que una maratón era cosa de hombres y que las mujeres no podían participar porque no la podían acabar. Kathrine se inscribió sin decir que era mujer y empezó la carrera, hasta que uno de los organizadores se dio cuenta e intentó sacarla a la fuerza.

Pero otros corredores lo evitaron y dieron ánimos para que acabara la carrera y se convirtiera en la primera mujer en completar una maratón de forma oficial. Como resultado de su participación, la Unión Atletas Amateurs (AAU: Amateur Athletic Union) prohibió la participación de mujeres en carreras donde participasen hombres. No fue hasta 1972 que la Maratón de Boston estableció una carrera oficial de mujeres.

Kathrine Switzer (USA, 1947) is an American marathon runner, author, and television commentator.

In the year 1967 she became the first woman to run the Boston Marathon as an officially registered competitor. During her run, the race manager Jock Semple assaulted Switzer, trying to grab her bib number and thereby remove her from official competition. After knocking down Switzer's trainer and fellow runner, Arnie Briggs, when he tried to protect her, Semple was shoved to the ground by Switzer's boyfriend, Thomas Miller, who was running with her, and she completed the race.

As a result of her run, the AAU banned women from competing in races against men. It was not until 1972 that the Boston Marathon established an official women's race.

En 1967, elle est devenue la première femme à courir le marathon de Boston en tant que concurrente officiellement inscrite. Pendant sa course, le directeur de course Jock Semple a agressé Switzer, essayant de s'emparer de son numéro de dossard et de la retirer ainsi de la compétition officielle.
