GILLIAN WRATT

Gillian Shirley Wratt (Motueka, 1954), better known as Gillian Wratyt, MNZM, was the first woman director of the New Zealand Antarctic Program (1992–1996). She is a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to Antarctica.

Wratt was born in Motueka and attended Motueka High School. She earned an honors degree in Botany (1972-1975) from Canterbury University in Christchurch, New Zealand. She joined the Plant Physiology Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) at Palmerston North in 1977 and in 1979 transferred to Wellington, where she worked for the Natural Research Advisory Council as secretary of the Primary Production Committee to be dealt with research programs and their funding. A DSIR Studies Award enabled him to earn a Master of Business Administration from the University of Sydney (1990).

Wratt was the first director of the New Zealand Antarctic Program from 1992-1996 and then executive director of the newly formed "New Zealand Antarctic Institute" (Antarctica, New Zealand) from 1996-2002

She has worked in a variety of scientific and environmental management roles, in addition to her roles in Antarctica, including that of environmental negotiator for New Zealand free trade agreements and that of coordinator of the establishment unit for the Research Institute. Crop and Food Research Institute. In particular, Wratt was executive director of the Cawthron Nonprofit Institute for the period 2006-2012.
