Sinéad O'Connor

Sinéad O´Connor was born in Dublin on December 8, 1966.

She became famous for her extraordinary voice and compositions.

Her parents had big marital problems and they separated when Sinéad was eight years old. They had five children and she was the third.

In 1979, Sinéad left her mother and went to live with her father. However, when she was 15 years old she was admitted in a special school, run by nuns, for her bad school behavior.

Afterward, in 1983, her father sent her to Newtown School in Waterford which it had a more permissive atmosphere. There, with the encouragement of her language teacher she recorded some songs that she composed herself.

She began her musical career as a singer in the musical band Ton Ton Macoute, which she formed in 1984.

The musical industry was fixed on her and her first album was called “The Lion and the Cobra”. She was not successful despite her good voice.

Her fame came in 1989 with her success “Nothing compares 2U”. It was a version of a song written by Prince. Then she recorded the song “Do not want what I haven´t got” that it had got several platinum records. After that, she went on to many others.

She has been also known for her ease in creating controversy. In 1992 for example she broke a photo of Pope John Paul II on a television programme in the United States.

With the advent of digital media, this tendency has widened. She has attacked other artists for different reasons and has aired her personal problems.

She has had four husbands and she is mother of five children.

Since the 90s her most well- known look has been with her head totally shaved.

Sinéad O´Connor was also named best Iris woman. She has played several musical genres, such as alternative rock, pop rock, folk rock, reggae and others.

She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2003. She has recently converted to Islam.
