Habitat:

  • Hard - Under overhanging rocks, entrances of caves and other biotopes with reduced light. Adults inhabit shallow coastal waters with rocky substrate.

Colors & patterns:

  • Three dorsal fins, first ray of second dorsal fin very elongated.
  • Tentacle on eye thin and short.
  • Pale brown, rusty body color with four slightly oblique brown bars.
  • Females in breeding season - a darker blotch on caudal peduncle with a point extending backwards.
  • Breeding males - black head, entirely yellow body

Behavior:

  • Found only in the dark habitats (in the Mediterranean).

Feeding: Benthic invertebrates, harpacticoids, amphipods and other copepods.
