Schooling characteristics:

  • Solitary

Colors & patterns: the tip of the nose is slightly convex and lips are moderately prominent (less upward facing than in Labrus merula).

The forehead is almost straight.

The body is a bit more slender than in other labrids, but the nose is less pointed. The head is longer than the body height.

Colors are very variable, and adults are only rarely green! Body is usually speckled with numerous white spots.

  • Females - often display contrasting mottling pattern.
  • Males - large males are usually more uniform in color, and more reddish than females.
  • Juveniles - green with white longitudinal line, typical for young living in sea grass.
