Common size: 15-18 cm (Europe and Mediterranean Marine Fish)

Habitat:

  • Hard - rocky, coral, artificial

  • Back- greenish - yellow
  • Background color - blue- gray
  • Sides- 5 vertical black bars becoming thinner towards the belly
  • Six band my appeared, on caudal fin base, as a dark bar or as two dots
  • Mating males- becoming dark bluish, black bars becoming less conspicuous

Behavior: (Fishbase)

  • Reef-associated - related to sites it inhabits
  • Juveniles-common in tide pools
  • Adults are found over shallow reef tops

Approach:

  • Easily approached
  • Bald

Breeding:

  • Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding
  • Eggs are demersal and attached to the substrate

Feeding characteristic - small planktonic or benthic animals
