Habitat:

  • Hard - Intertidal areas, wave-battered rocky shores

Water column position:

  • Benthic

Colors & patterns:

  • Basic coloration mostly olive-greyish (dependent on colour of substrate)
  • 5-6 vertical bars from bases of dorsal fin onto side of body
  • Spawning males dark brownish
  • Lacks tentacle above the eyes

Behavior:

  • Cryptic - crevices and troughs in steep walls
  • Activity: Nocturnal, active during the day in the spawning season
  • Shy
  • Very inactive except during spawning
  • Breathe air when out of water under rocks or seaweeds

Schooling characteristics:

  • Solitary

Feeding characteristic: Omnivorous - they feed on mussels, other benthic invertebrates and algae
