- body very silvery (occasionally with dark indistinct patches); fins pale yellow
- Mouth small and low set; back rounded, belly almost flat
- Dark blotch on the upper corner of operculum (sometimes faded)

- Reef-associated
- Shoals shelter in caves/crevices/overhangs
- Enters estuaries and lagoons at sexual maturation
- Diurnal (?)
- Indifferent/Easily approached
