An Unsettling Journey in My Life
By: John Kazerooni
Embarking on a journey to Mazandaran during my seventh- grade year was meant to be an exciting adventure, a vivid introduction to the breathtaking landscapes of northern Iran.
However, it became one of the most unsettling and life-changing experiences of my life. The verdant beauty of the region, with its winding streams and lush greenery stretching as far as the eye could see, was a stark contrast to the turmoil that would soon unfold.
My father's company had provided us with a beachfront house overlooking the serene waters of the Caspian Sea in Ramsar City. It was an idyllic retreat where my father, usually busy at his clinic, had a rare chance to relax. The peaceful days by the sea became my sanctuary. I spent mornings on the porch listening to the symphony of crashing waves or wandering the shore collecting seashells. It was a tranquil escape, a momentary reprieve from the routines of daily life.
But the serenity didn't last.
One morning, I stepped into the house and immediately sensed something was wrong. ...

This experience taught me that life's challenges often come without warning, and that empathy, understanding, and communication are crucial. It underscored the importance of paying attention-not just to what is spoken, but to what remains unsaid. The scars from that journey remain, but they also remind me of the strength it takes to face the unspoken and to find hope in the midst of despair.
