NOTE: For every video that goes on Youtube, we need to have a corresponding short form cut, no exceptions.
SHORT FORM: A DIFFERENT ANIMAL
Short Form Overview
Short form pieces are either originals or cutdown versions of longer documentaries.
They tend to be series that each episode structure matches the pilot.
They vary widely depending on the vertical and the show.
When starting a short form piece, reach out to the short form team to see if there’s already a style guide that will include all shooting style specifications and equipment needs.
If it’s a new series and the pitch is approved, speak with me about style and we’ll get something formalized that is easily replicable.
Pre-vis is important in short form!
For short form, we work in three different aspect ratios: 1.78:1, 1:1 and 0.53:1 (vertical) - each shoot should have footage that is safe for all three aspects.
RULES OF THUMB
Most short form is aired in square or vertical format (for Snapchat).
Shoot wider than normal. Minimize use of close ups and stick to wide or medium shots - EVEN FOR INSERT SHOTS!!
Subjects in short form usually address camera directly instead of looking at an off-screen interviewer.
Short form is quite often shot in the studio using a plain background and good lighting.
ALWAYS think about motion graphics when shooting for short form — leave plenty of negative space (usually on frame left).
Whenever a host is a central, driving figure, SHOOT WITH GRAPHICS IN MIND!!
Many cameras allow for custom aspect ratio markers - practice shooting with a 1:1 or greater aspect ratio — this will insure that the frame is useful for socials.
Even if you’re not doing a short form piece, it’s helpful to think about shooting for mobile.
FOR PRODUCERS: shoot with your phone while on location. Use both horizontal and vertical - we can usually use any media you return with.
