R&C RISK ASSESSMENT
If you are planning to assess your local content for R&C concerns without the oversight of US R&C, please keep the following in mind:
HIGH-RISK - These are things that *must* be licensed/released in order for a video to be clear!

- Anything under copyright - we cannot clear a video containing unlicensed archival & music
- THERE’S LEVELS TO THIS:
- Unlicensed archival footage from ABC = high risk;
- Unreleased family photographs from a person who is featured in a video = lower risk
- The latter would not be a big deal, the former would jeopardize a huge vendor agreement VICE has with ABC
- THERE’S LEVELS TO THIS:
- MINORS / people doing drugs or anything illegal or embarrassing/defamatory on-camera (CONTEXT IS EVERYTHING) - we must have personal releases on file for these instances, or else written approval from Legal counsel!
- If your video is sponsored, branded, or partnered at all - EVERYTHING / EVERYONE MUST HAVE A RELEASE
- Think about it like this - we are assigning someone’s likeness to a brand in these instances; would you want your face associated with a brand or company without your consent?
- Using products in a way other than their intended use - drinking a Pepsi on camera is fine, but making a bong out of a Pepsi can is not fine (this is where we advise edit changes like blurring)
MEDIUM-RISK - If you don't have releases/licenses for these things, they require Legal approval:

- Personal releases for main contributors - there’s no reason why we shouldn't have releases for main contributors
- Unlicensed local music / on-screen music (EX: karaoke scenes *depending on the song*)
LOW-RISK - absence of these would not hold up clearance on a video

- Missing location releases (dependent on context but not usually an issue)
- Missing personal releases for public officials/military/people in public spaces that aren't doing embarrassing or defamatory things
**Best practice = get Legal approval on Low-Risk items as well**
