OK WE THINK THIS IS THE FINAL CUT - CAN WE PUBLISH?

NOPE!

Every cut goes through two Quality Control (QC) reviews first:

1. R&C Review - for edit changes, typos, & Legal/Clearance concerns. This is done by a R&C QUALITY CONTROL COORDINATOR.
2. Technical Review - identify issues with picture and audio integrity. This is done by U.S. Post-Production & Web Dev. (See EDITORS POST-PRODUCTION site for technical QC guidelines)

R&C REVIEW PROCESS

**NON-US OFFICES - It is highly recommended that you assign someone to R&C QC coordinator role for your local productions**

R&C QC Coordinators are in charge of:

• Reviewing all videos before publishing (this includes trailers, cut-downs, long-form, short-form, social videos, editorial companions...ALL OF IT!)
• Confirming R&C deliverables are correct & complete prior to publishing
• Updating notes in the R&C section of VL2 entries so that we have an accurate, "at-a-glance" view of the rights associated with any video asset

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR DURING PRE-PUBLICATION R&C REVIEW

• WATCH THE VIDEO & NOTE ALL PERSONAL APPEARANCES, LOCATIONS, MATERIALS, ARCHIVAL & ON-SCREEN MUSIC

• THEN, MATCH THE RELEASES & LICENSES TO THE FOLLOWING:
  • Personal releases for anyone speaking on-camera
  • Wide-Area or “Blanket” Releases posted at any events
  • Location releases obtained for every place filmed
  • All music featured in the footage has been cleared / all music added to the footage is either from Jingle Punks & Audio Network or has been properly licensed.
  • All third-party archival has been licensed or released
  • Any featured materials are released
  • All subtitles / lower-thirds are spelled correctly
  • Any unreleased/unlicensed items must be noted by time-code & sent to Legal for review/approval

• IF YOU SEE THESE ITEMS IN THE VIDEO, FLAG THEM TO THE PRODUCTION TEAM - THESE MUST BE BLURRED OR APPROVED AS IS BY LEGAL:
  • License plates on vehicles belonging to subjects or crew
  • Addresses on private residences
  • MINORS who are unreleased (regardless of whether they are in a public location or private location)
  • Any brands being used in unintended ways (see Coca Cola example)
  • Any unreleased people in private places
  • Any unreleased doing drugs or drinking on camera
  • Any personal information (packaging, ID’s, email addresses shown on screens, etc.)
  • Programs playing on televisions / computer monitors shown in shots
  • Nudity (YouTube requires all nudity to be blurred - for VICE Video only check internally)
  • Faces of deceased or injured/sick people
  • Faces of everyone in a casino unless special permission was obtained

• Your R&C QC Coordinator is responsible for reviewing all of your videos before sending to Post and for final Technical QC
• This means that by the time a video is sent to Post for final Technical QC:
  • All lower thirds & credits are spelled properly / are consistent
  • All archival & music is confirmed as cleared
  • There are NO mistakes in the cut
• Post QC operators are looking for technical issues only; they will not know if your subject is credited incorrectly or if there is a spelling error!
  • Credits: Only YOU know what is in your piece & you are ultimately responsible for making sure the credits reflect all of the elements / people that worked on it. Anyone attached to the creation/inspiration of the piece gets credited.

R&C REVIEW - STEPS

1. Producer / AP sends the following to the R&C Coordinator 2 BUSINESS DAYS PRIOR TO SCHEDULED AIR DATE:
   • Preview link to video
   • All licenses/releases for video
   • Insider entry link for video
     • NOTE: WE NO LONGER USE INSIDER. LEARN MORE ABOUT VL2 HERE.
   • Link to Production Bible

2. R&C coordinator reviews & responds with notes - these can be general questions, edit changes, or items that require written Legal approval in order to include in your video.

3. AP & R&C coordinator work together until all points have been addressed

4. AP creates the R&C Deliverables & uploads to VL2 page

5. Video is sent through POST PROCESS & embed code is circled back around to R&C, who marks entry as Reviewed/Cleared & passes the embed code to the video team & vertical head.

POST QC REVIEW

Once your piece is PICTURE LOCKED and ready for final QC, email the info below to nycpost@vice.com & shelly.kamiel@vice.com with your editors/AEs on CC so they can address QC notes if any, immediately.

• If Shelly finds any quality control errors, she will respond on this chain so the editor can fix and re-export. Please give Shelly at minimum 24 hours to screen, and keep this necessary step in mind with tight delivery schedules.

• Once Shelly gives a PASS on the piece, the assets are given to nycpost to prepare encodes according to the submitted work order. Preparing the encodes can take up to an hour depending on the length of the piece and the number of platforms it is going to. Once encoding is complete, embed codes will be created.

• Once the embed codes have been created, nycpost will submit the codes to R&C for final approval and release. Nycpost never releases embed codes directly, they must always come from R&C, even if your piece is "pre-cleared". If you need your embed code to make a deadline, please speak with R&C directly.
