Equipment & Carnets

Find out what you're expected to own (ex: winter boots, ) and what VICE can provide for you (fishing waders, bulletproof vests, etc). You should always have:

• Leatherman
• Headlamp
• Bad weather gear

Have a conversation with Producer and DP’s about what gear you’ll be using and whether it’s being rented or coming from our gear room. The gear room deals with 20+ shoots a day and can be amazing but they need a heads up about what gear you'll be using. Make sure you schedule a gear check out the day before you travel. If the crew misses a flight because you were checking microphones or someone had to get you SD cards last minute you’re in trouble.

Producers: give the gear room +48 hours heads up and have a call with your cam op before the checkout. The earlier you put in a request, the greater the chances we’ll have gear in house at no cost to your shoot.

• To send in a request, have your DP put together a gear list for your shoot, including any tripods, lenses, lighting, sound and grip equipment. Email the list along with your pick-up and return dates and your Project ID to equipmentops@vice.com.
• Once the equipment room receives the request, they’ll let you know what’s available in house and what needs to be rented. They’ll follow up with rental houses for a quote.
• Rental accounts should be set up by the equipment room team so they can properly set up a rental account and provide COIs as needed. They may have preferred vendors already set up.
• Plan and schedule a proper gear check out with your camera operator so you have enough time to troubleshoot any problems. Also plan how and when equipment will be returned after the shoot, most rental houses expect gear back by 10am on the return date.

CARNETS

If you are traveling internationally with gear from the US, you might need a carnet (think of it as a passport or customs manifest for your gear).

• List of countries that require a carnet can be found online here.
• To request a carnet, a complete list of gear with serial numbers must be emailed to sergio.noriega@vice.com two (2) days in advance of departure.
• It is very important that your carnet is stamped upon exit and entry back into the US.
• The final cost of the carnet is based on the equipment total of your gear list and this cost is billed to your project ID.
