We have three general types of podcasts:

1) "Roundtable Discussions" - 2 or more people in conversation on a focussed subject. Usually all VICE employees but sometimes with an outside guest example: Waypoint Radio, Biscuits, The Thump Podcast

2) "Interviews" - hosts interviewing a special guest in each episode with a focus on the guests activities and projects example: Radio Motherboard, Rave Curious

3) "Highly produced storytelling/informational podcasts" - hosts narrow in on a niche topic for podcasts that involve intricate editing with layered sfx/music. Can involve more than one interview. example: pluspluspodcast, Science Solved It

Development

1) Information necessary for a new podcast to enter production includes:

• Podcast Title [Cannot Already Exist On iTunes]
• Podcast description/one liner
• Estimated Episode Length
• Recording Location/Recording Dates
• Release Day ( If Recurring)
• Podcast Logo
• Podcast Music
• Episode Structure: Genre, Topics Covered, Order Of Segments
• Number Of Guests
• Hosts

2) Podcasts are under the control of Vertical heads. Meaning budgeting, and green-lighting new podcasts are their responsibility.

3) Podcast is tested out with a pilot episode that Vertical listen to and decide whether to green-light or adjust for another pilot run.

Production

For Roundtable Discussions, send Tim information on:

• How many microphones to set up.
• Length of recording session
• Recording location
• If any guests will be calling through phone/skype

For Interviews:

• How many microphones to set up.
• Length of recording session
• Recording location
• If any guests will be calling through phone/skype

For Highly Produced Podcasts:

• How many microphones to set up for each recording
• Length of recording session(s)
• Recording location(s)
• If any guests will be calling through phone/skype
• VO script

For post production, Tim will need to know or have access to:

• Roundtable Discussions/Interviews
  • If the host/producer/vertical head needs to review an edit before release.
  • Moments from conversation to cut or adjust.
  • Audio from interviewee/guest [if recording via skype or phone]
    • Editing includes: Syncing Audio, Separating tracks, removing coughs or sounds of hesitation ("like" "umm"), Intro/Outro Music
• For Highly Produced Podcasts:
  • Script including time stamps from pre-recorded audio.
    • Editing includes: SFX/Music, Separating tracks, removing coughs or sounds of hesitation ("like" "umm"), Intro/Outro Music
