Wide-Area or “Blanket” Releases
A wide-area or "blanket" release is something you hang up that gives notification to people in a large area that they may be filmed.
SOME GUIDELINES ON WIDE-AREA RELEASES:
- If you're filming at an event or non-private location - a wide area release MUST be posted at each entrance.
- When hanging a wide-area release, make sure it is:
- Highly visible
- If indoors - posted at the entry
- Translated to the local language(s) of where ever you are filming
- ONCE POSTED - You MUST take a picture of the blanket release! (You will need to submit this with your Release Binder on VL2)
PLEASE NOTE - Wide-Area or “Blanket” Releases do not cover everything!
They are posted to cover background people without having to get personal releases for everyone in a particular area
- In particular, wide-area releases DO NOT cover:
- Embarrassing behavior (example: a girl taking her shirt off at a concert, or people who are visibly intoxicated)
- Anyone under the age of 18
- People outside of or nearby a location where a wide-area release is posted
- Main/featured/prominent subjects (anyone speaking to the camera should always sign a personal release!)
