Update-Shaffer
I am married with two grown children and am now retired and living in the eastern part of beautiful North Carolina. After PRHS and graduating from the Loomis School in Windsor, CT, I majored in Engineering at Ole Miss. I arrived early on campus several weeks before school started to join freshmen football practice. After playing football for part of my first semester, it was obvious that five afternoons of football practice conflicted too seriously with four afternoons of required engineering labs. I joined football again for spring training but again found that football plus school and working at the school grill were too much. I ended up in the infirmary with mono and had to remain at school an extra week to make up missed final exams. That was a sad time as I realized it was the end of my football career. After receiving a BS in Engineering from Ole Miss, I joined the Curtiss-Wright Corporation and worked on aircraft engines and the Wankel Rotary engine project for several years in Wood Ridge, NJ. While working full time I completed the MBA curriculum at Fairleigh Dickinson University in the evenings, commuting from as far away as Cranbury, NJ.
After leaving Curtiss-Wright I worked for a number of companies including Johnson & Johnson, Shell Chemicals, Abbott Labs, General Electric, Martin Marietta, Wang Laboratory, and Motorola. The responsibilities were varied and included Project Engineering, Program Management, Federal Procurement and computer related sales, marketing, and consulting. In 2004 I retired after over ten years of consulting to the Federal Government in the Washington, DC, area concentrating on Software Process Improvement. My wife, Sue, and I moved the next year to a community know as Cypress Landing in Chocowinity, NC, after spending 29 years residing in Rockville, MD. We had lived in the Princeton, NJ area (Cranbury, NJ) for about five years and then in the northern suburbs of Chicago (Libertyville, IL) also for about five years before relocating to Maryland.
Sue and I enjoy golfing, boating, social activities, traveling, and visiting our family in the San Francisco and Philadelphia areas. Our son completed a double major of electrical engineering and computer science at Vanderbilt University in Nashville and is a patent attorney in the Silicon Valley area with his wife and two children. Our daughter graduated from SMU in Dallas and works for the Philadelphia Zoo as the Director of Gifting. Her husband is the “Voice of the Phillies” on radio, enabling us to join them to watch the Phillies win the 2008 World Series, which was exciting and great fun. We particularly enjoy our family visits wherever they may be plus spending time with our two grandchildren.
The 50th Reunion of the 1958 Pearl River Pirates was a wonderful event, and it was great reminiscing and seeing old friends and classmates. We thank all those who worked so hard to coordinate it and make it such a success.
