Bicycle Trip in Europe
The "Affiliation Club" was the extracurricular activity at PRHS devoted to international relations. Besides hosting exchange students and partnering with schools in Africa and France, the club decided in 1957-58 to make a bicycle trip in Europe and stay in youth hostels.
From the 1958 Yearbook: "With preparatory trips and special training classes forming a major part of the organization's program, the Hostelers planned diligently for the summer's bicycle trip through France, Germany, Holland and Belgium."
Al Fischbein, whose photos you see here, has this recollection:
The trip started at Le Harve, France, and we biked down into the Loire Valley. I think our first night we stayed at the 'dog houses' at Mt. St. Michele, and then at a really crummy hostel in Rennes. We visited some huge chateaux, and then went north
to Paris. From Paris we took a train to Strasbourg on the German border. We then biked through the Black Forest and then through the Rhine Valley. After Germany we biked through Holland and Belgium, and visited the Brussels' World's Fair. We then either biked or took some other transportation to Le Harve.
Some high-lites (low-lites) were Joan Noonan crashing her bike and breaking her leg while going down a mountain. Mrs. Wood
along with a few others of us getting 'very' tipsy at the Red Ox in Heidelberg. Bob Stokstad playing in the band on the ship coming over. The beautiful hostels in Germany compared to the lousy ones in France. If I remember right there was almost no hot water in most of our hostels, and we washed our clothes and showered with cold water.
I remember how modern and beautiful the World's Fair was in 1958.
I also remember how tough it was biking in Holland, it seemed we were always going into the wind. It was amazing how we could carry all our supplies, minus food, for two months, on our bikes.Captioned Photo Gallery from the trip.
