Happenings in Pearl River today of interest to the Class of 1958

January 10, 2018

The Pearl River weekly newspaper Our Town had two articles in their December 27, 2017 issue that I think you’ll enjoy.  (I know this only because Tom O’Brien sent me clippings.)

The first is about a PRHS Senior, Ryan Slattery, “Scouting for a project, Eagle candidate restores long-forgotten cemetery” by Editor and Publisher, Arthur Aldrich.  You’ll come away with the feeling that the future of our country will be better with young folks like Ryan Slattery coming along.  Also,  there’s interesting family genealogy from the really early days of Pearl River.  (Now I know where Bogert Avenue got its name.) When I was going to school I’d walk past this cemetery daily, never knowing it was there.    Click here for the on-line issue of Our Town.

The second story is about a Pearl River woman, Aline Griffith, born in 1923 who went to the Central Avenue School and from there to some exciting parts of the world.  Although her home was in Madrid where she died this past year, she was proud to show her origins to the Spanish count she married.  “Countess, model, author, spy; Aline Griffith dies at 95” is by Staff Wrtier Suzanne Daycock."   It starts on Page 3.

April 12, 2017   Wanna buy a church?

Our man about town, Tom O'Brien, was out walking today and snapped this photo of 125 E. Central Avenue.

You'll recognize this as St. Stephen's Episcopal Church,  catty-corner across from Pearl River High School.

Here's the listing in the church pages from the Orangetown Telegram, October 30, 1958.

(This brings back memories as I took piano lessons from Mrs. Churchill for many years, all to no avail. Mrs. Churchill died in 2000 at age 92, 20 years after her husband, Ernest Churchill, who was once rector of St. Stephen's.)

In the late '60s the Episcopal Congregation moved to their present location on Earhardt Road.   For the last 48 years, 125 E. Central Avenue was the home of the Sitzmark Ski Shop.
