More Information:
Oleksandr Kulyk has been engaged in philosophical research since 1999, primarily focusing on the history of philosophy. His methodological approach involves investigating the genesis, development, and content of various philosophical concepts, comparing theories from different philosophical schools, and analysing how biographical factors influence philosophers’ ideas. This approach is evident in both of his dissertations, successfully defended in 2005 and 2015; in his monograph Evolution of Philosophical Strategies for Interacting with Chaos (2014); in articles such as Chaos in Heinrich Rickert’s Philosophy (2019); and in his educational publications, including the comprehensive 700-page textbook Philosophy (2013) and the concise A Brief Introduction to Analytic Philosophy (2019).
Another distinctive feature of Oleksandr Kulyk’s research is his exploration of concepts and theories that address challenges to rationality and propose ways of preserving it under difficult conditions. For instance, his second dissertation (Doctor of Sciences) examined the possibility of maintaining rationality in the face of chaotic phenomena, while his first dissertation (Candidate of Sciences) focused on challenges to rationality, such as distorted social communication. His articles have also explored tools for enhancing rational thinking, including critical thinking, philosophical research methodology, and the role of philosophy in university education.
Since 2004, Oleksandr Kulyk has taught at Ukrainian universities, and in 2015, he became a full professor in the Department of Philosophy at Oles Honchar Dnipro National University, Ukraine. Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, his city, Dnipro, came under regular missile attacks. He and his wife decided to move their three young children to safety, choosing Ireland as a secure place to live. In Ireland, Oleksandr Kulyk taught the course Current Ukrainian Thought at Maynooth University during the autumn semester of 2022, and since September 2023, he has been a visiting professor at University College Cork.
Since the summer of 2022, Oleksandr Kulyk has been conducting research on contemporary Ukrainian philosophers’ perspectives on the nature of the Russo-Ukrainian war. As part of this research, he has published articles such as The Will to Freedom: A Ukrainian Perspective on the Issue of Will (2025), The Issue of Evil in the Context of Russia’s War Against Ukraine (2023) and How to Think About the War in Ukraine? (2022). Furthermore, he contributes to the development of Ukrainian philosophy as a field of scholarly inquiry, as demonstrated in his article What Is Ukrainian Philosophy? (2022).
