How to install Mapsource on your windows PC
Mapsource is an outdated and unsupported program originally created by Garmin. But it works Awesome!
Mapsource when installed correctly is still one of the best Tracklog editors. This tool is important because it allows us to make great adventure rides! Most users like Mapsource way better then Base Camp. Most user are not able to make Base Camp work well for them.
Other: As mapsource is an old unsupported program it often crashes on the newer windows operating systems. This can be frustration, but if you get in the habit of saving you work often it really is no big deal, you just start the program again and open your current file. This has worked well for me.
Download Mapsource Here: It will come as a zipped folder and it is 2G of data So it takes a while
You will likely get a pop up that looks something like this:
Click on the Blue Download Arrow. Then you will get something like this:
Yes select download anyway,
You should get something like this:
Right Click on the Downloaded Zip File "Mapsource for PCs" and the choose Extract. ( it can take 30 minutes to do this)
Important when this unzip is done move this New Folder "Mapsource for PC's" to your Hard drive where you keep your gps files.
Note this is because if you leave it in your downloads folder it will get erased someday and then you Mapsource will not work

Important: Do these steps in order
1. Open Folder "Mapsource World Map" double click and run "Setup" and follow the directions.
2 Double Click and Run "Mapsource 6157" and follow directions (this is the up grade that you want) Don't do any mapsource upgrades after this one
3. Open "City Nav 2013 Unlocked for Mapsource" and run the install
Ok open Mapsource and it should work now.
Note there is a scroll down box to change between maps: Yours should look like this:
Ok now start making and sharing good rides.
Ok, below are added maps that you may like:
Be careful with TOPO Maps as they are often wrong and have too much old information, much of the stuff is not really there anymore. The standard city maps have great accurate back roads detail, yes even better then Topo.
Add Topo West (Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada)
Download it and unzip it and and move it to your hard drive as above and then open the folder and run the "Setup" Application
It is over 3G so it may take a while to download.
Add TOPO North Central (Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska and Iowa)
Download it and unzip it and and move it to your hard drive as above and then open the folder and run the "Setup" Application
It is over 4G so it may take a while to download.
Add TOPO Southwest (Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico)
Download it and unzip it and and move it to your hard drive as above and then open the folder and run the "Setup" Application
It is over 3G so it may take a while to download.
