About the GPS files:

The GPS files are built using Track or Tracklogs. Tracks are the bread crumb trails from the actual ride. The tracks provide a complete description of the shape of the path including every turn and bend. There are two popular methods to use tracks with your gps.

1. The “Trackback” function. Using this method you will choose the desired track and select “trackback to end”. Then using the map page or the compass you will follow the path.

2. The “Display track on Screen” using this method the user selects the desired track and enables the “display track on screen” . Then the rider will simply follow the path in the screen.

The gps file offers two rides, each of which has 3 tracks to describe the ride. The rider will choose the desired ride then start with track 1 (B1 Bear Run or G1 Gorgonio Rim). After completing the first track the rider will choose the second with a choice of a hard or easy option.

For those GPS riders that like waypoints many are given, see the printed map for their locations.

Ride descriptions below: (same as the printable file above)

Bear Country Run:

This ride leads you from east to west through the historic Big Bear gold country known as Holcomb Valley. The route winds through Big Pine, Crab Flats and past Green Valley.

Ride length: 54 miles, or Optional Short Cut is 22 miles.

Ride Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

Detailed Description: The ride begins on pavement passing around Lake Baldwin and heading up hill before transitioning to dirt at 3N16 (Holcomb Valley Rd.). The route winds through the Holcomb Valley Gold Country. (For more detailed historical information stop by the Big Bear Discovery Center at 40971 North Shore Drive, Fawnskin, and also visit the website at http://bigbearcountry.com/holcomb.html#introduction )

At about the 11 mile mark riders can opt to turn south on 2N09 as a shortcut back to Highway 38 (waypoint B3 EZ Way). The main route continues west through the hills toward Big Pine campground. Then the route tends down hill towards Holcomb Creek where you will find a small water crossing. The crossing is paved and will probably contain a couple of inches of water. The route starts uphill again and follows the valley towards Crab Flats Campground. At Crab Flats the route is paved for a mile or so and challenges you with another slightly deeper water crossing. The road turns back to dirt and winds its way up to Green Valley Road. You will turn right on Green Valley Road and head down to HY18 and back to Big Bear. There are about 30 miles total of dirt roads on this route.

Gorgonio Rim Run:

This ride takes you south over Big Bear Mountain, down along San Gorgonio, and then cuts back northward up the other side of the mountain.

Ride length: 65 miles (hard way option) or 56 miles (easy way option).

Ride Difficulty: Moderate to Hard

Detailed Description: The ride begins on pavement through Big Bear Lake and onto dirt at Mill Creek Road. This road winds over the mountain to Bluff Lake road and continues down off the mountain on the switchbacks of "Clarks Grade". Next it's through Seven Pines and along the Santa Ana River towards Pinezanita. Then the route follows along the Santa Ana River trail up to Angelus Oaks. You may stop here for a great lunch. The next segment of the route is pavement and follows the "Rim of the World Scenic Byway" to the junction with Jenks Lake Road. You may choose to stop and visit Jenks Lake. The route continues around and then rejoins "Rim of the World Scenic Byway". At the 44.3 mile mark the rider has a choice between continuing on an "easy way" or "hard way" route. The easy way route continues up HY 38 for 12.5 miles and arrives back at the BMW Rally. The “hard way” route goes left onto dirt at Wildhorse Meadows Road. This very scenic road cuts back up and over the mountain where it intersects with Sand Canyon Road. A left turn here takes you back down to Big Bear Lake. Finally the route continues eastward through town and back to the BMW Rally.
