Dear Maureen, I’m Pete Baklinski and this is your Canadian Pro-Life News Bits where I let you know what’s happening on our country’s pro-life and pro-family front.

A blessed Holy Thursday to you. Since tomorrow is Good Friday, when Christians around the world commemorate the death of Jesus on the cross that won for us so great a redemption, we’ve decided to send the News Bits one day earlier so that there is nothing to distract you on this most holy day.

The most important news this week is that an Ontario NDP MPP has introduced a Drag Queen protection bill that would make it a criminal activity for parents to protest the grooming of children by Drag Queens in libraries and other locations throughout the entire province. This bill must be strongly opposed.

Are you planning on attending the National March for Life in Ottawa on May 11? I wrote a piece for The Interim about why I’m going. Shockingly, a number of Catholic schools have decided not to send students to this important event, citing safety concerns. The real reason, of course, is because abortion activists have been going after schools to stop sending students so as to decrease the impact of the event on legislators and so that students will no longer be exposed to the powerful pro-life message. Sad.

Don’t miss the story about the Canadian dad known as Billboard Chris who was violently assaulted by a transgender activist during a rally in BC. His story made it all the way to Tucker Carlson, who spoke about it on his Fox show.

CLC comment: As we wrote in our letter to the Halton Catholic District School Board, citing safety as a concern is unfounded. "As organizers of the National March for Life, year after year, we have successfully organized a peaceful demonstration that welcomes thousands of pro-life Canadians, of all ages, including families, children, seniors and school-aged youth, from across the country. We work with both the Ottawa Police and Parliamentary Protective Service to ensure the safety and protection of our demonstrators, and we’ve been successful in avoiding any violence. The March has all the legal permit requirements and licenses. The police are in attendance, and they decide which routes to be taken in order to ensure the safety of all participants. Additionally, paramedics are present on Parliament Hill in the event of injury."

Maureen, the resurrection of Our Lord on Easter Sunday is the greatest pro-life event that ever happened, and will ever happen.

By rising from the dead, Jesus proved that life is more powerful than death. He proved that life wins in the end. It is because of Easter that pro-lifers know, with utter certainty, that abortion will one day be abolished and death will no longer hold mankind captive.

We may be tempted to think at times that the powers of darkness in our culture of death are overwhelming and unstoppable. It must have seemed this way, too, for the followers of Jesus who saw him murdered on a cross. They must have thought that this was the bitter end and all their hopes were dashed out. Even the sun hid its face at Jesus’ death.

Yet, God had a plan throughout all of this. He was entirely in control, even when it seemed most bleak. He knew what he was doing. Through his death, he conquered death – that ancient, terrifying penalty meted out to Adam and Eve for transgressing God’s law.

As St. John Chrysostom wrote in his famous Easter homily: “He has destroyed it by enduring it, He has despoiled Hades by going down into its kingdom, He has angered it by allowing it to taste of his flesh.”

“Hades is angered because frustrated, it is angered because it has been mocked, it is angered because it has been destroyed, it is angered because it has been reduced to naught, it is angered because it is now captive. It seized a body, and, lo! it encountered heaven; it seized the visible, and was overcome by the invisible.”

Jesus beat the devil at his own game by dying and then rising.

Whenever you are tempted to give up and give in, remember that God has already won the battle. Because of Easter, life wins and the devil loses.

St. Chrysostom puts it best: “O death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory? Christ is risen and you are abolished. Christ is risen and the demons are cast down. Christ is risen and the angels rejoice. Christ is risen and life is freed. Christ is risen and the tomb is emptied of the dead: for Christ, being risen from the dead, has become the Leader and Reviver of those who had fallen asleep. To Him be glory and power for ever and ever. Amen.”

Yes, a BIG Amen!
