Maureen, I’ll keep this one quick. I was recently speaking with a friend who was telling me his secret for keeping sane during these evil times we live in. And, yes, with abortion, euthanasia, transgenderism, homosexuality, the corruption of the young, the breakdown of the family, the times are certainly evil.

“Patient endurance,” my friend said, quoting from a New Testament passage.

With so many evils that abound everywhere, it is all too easy to burn oneself out trying to oppose them all, or, on the other hand, it is all too easy to throw up one’s hands in despair, and simply ignore them.

Both responses are problematic. Each of us must prudently discern which battles the Lord calls us to, and how best to fight them. And, we can’t ignore the evil before us, for, as a wise man once said, “for evil to continue, good people must remain silent.”

Sometimes, we are called to patiently endure the evil before us.

I think about Christ hanging on the cross. He was taunted to come down to prove he was the Son of God. And, he could have come down. But, he patiently endured the evil, knowing that a greater good would come from it, namely our salvation.

Sometimes, we need to hang with Jesus on the cross. Catherine Doherty, foundress of the lay apostolate Madonna House, once pointed out that the cross has two sides: one for Jesus, and the other for each of us.

As Jesus said, “If anyone wants to be my follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me.”

Because of Christ, the cross we carry in his footsteps always leads to resurrection.

As we approach the holiest week of the Christian season, let us remember to patiently endure the cross as we await the resurrection.

Be bold and daring for life!
