Dear Maureen, I’m Pete Baklinski and this is your Canadian Pro-Life News Bits where I let you know what’s happening on our country’s pro-life and pro-family front.

This week’s top news is that a number of prominent psychiatrists are urging the Liberal government to pause its rollout of assisted death for the mentally ill, scheduled to begin this coming March, warning that the current system is ripe for abuse and that many will seek to be killed “under a false pretense.” Will the Trudeau Liberals take heed? Not likely. They seem hellbent on lining up as many people as possible to be medically executed.

In some good news, the city of Calgary has dropped charges against two men over a private conversation they had on public transportation while en route to the '1 Million March 4 Children' in September. While these charges never should have been made in the first place, it’s nice to see some sanity prevail here.

More and more people are beginning to wake up to the looming catastrophe caused by our country’s plummeting birthrate. Canada’s drop has been so sharp that Stats Canada is warning that we will soon have the lowest birth rate in the world. Pro-life parents, please have more babies. In the end, there’s nothing more pro-life than bringing a new life into the world!

Finally, don’t miss my reflection at the end about some good news from our neighbors in the US.

Maureen, earlier this month, a reporter from the New York Sun reached out to CLC asking for comment about an influential association of U.S. medical doctors who were debating whether or not to reverse their long-standing opposition to assisted suicide and euthanasia and take a more neutral stance.

The reporter wondered if the American Medical Association could learn any lessons from what has been happening here in Canada. I responded that there was indeed a lot that could be learned from what has unfolded here in Canada since assisted suicide was legalized in 2016. While part of my answer was published in the New York Sun’s report, below is my full answer to the reporter’s questions.

I said that doctors should never be neutral when it comes to life.

“It wasn’t that long ago that all doctors took the Hippocratic oath where they swore to ‘give no deadly medicine to anyone if asked, nor suggest any such counsel.’ Practicing medicine should always be about healing, not killing. The wise of the past understood that medicine can be abused, which was why this oath was developed and all in the professional healing arts swore to uphold it.”

I said that if the American Medical Association goes down the path that Canada has gone, U.S. doctors, just like our Canadian doctors now, will soon find themselves compelled by law, with no ability to object, to participate, even by means of a referral, in killing their sick and elderly patients who request it.

“I urge the AMA to keep in place its opposition to assisted suicide. Taking a position of neutrality when it comes to killing the sick and elderly is taking a step toward acceptance of this evil practice.  The fact is that once killing becomes an acceptable solution to a problem, such as terminal illness, suffering, etc, there suddenly become many problems where killing becomes a viable solution.”

Yes, we’ve unfortunately experienced the slippery slope here in Canada where first assisted suicide was legalized for extreme cases. It’s now been expanded to such an extent that even those who are mentally ill can now request it (coming in March). And, there is talk in our Parliament of expanding it to children. It has been offered to former military members suffering from PTSD. It’s been offered to even those suffering from social issues, like being homeless.

I told the reporter: “This pandora’s box should never be opened. It has brought in a death regime into our country which is constantly looking for more victims to kill.”

I’m happy to report that the American Medical Association delegates voted to keep their current policy against assisted suicide in place which states that euthanasia is “fundamentally incompatible with the physician’s role as healer.” It also refused to change the accurate term “assisted suicide” to the euphemistic phrase “medical aid in dying,” used in Canada to describe this evil practice. This is great news.

While Canada is leading the world in the nightmare that unfolds when killing people becomes legalized, there is some silver lining in that our country has become a cautionary tale and dire warning for any other country looking to legalize this immoral practice.

Be bold and daring for life!
