The article that we read is “Sharing one Skin” by Jeanette Armstrong. In this article Jeanette talked about her different sides of her family and where she is from, which is Okanagan. One main thing she also says is how she cannot be separated from her land or place.Another thing she mentions is her people and how they pray. She goes on to talk explain that when they pray they say “this is my clan” to identify themselves and where they come from
The second article is How Place Names Impact the Way We See Landscape by B. Toastie. In this article it talks about how many different places have names as the ones that they should have.It talks about how some places in the US are named after colonizers, like former president(s), washington, jackson, and jefferson. Here in the south west we have “san” and “santa” for most of the pueblos located in New Mexico. Laura Tohe grew up knowing the places of names by the colonial names and the dine name that her people had used.
Roosevelt D. Franklin. A dust storm approaching Rolla, Kansas. May 16th,1935.
Drought and dust bowl conditions-The article was about how the dust bowl developed and how it affected everyone. The dust bowl was developed by several economic and agricultural factors, which had included federal land policies, changes in weather and other cultural factors. This time period was also known as the great depression as it drove many farming families and a crash in the economy. This has also driven many families in search of better work and living conditions.
I can connect to this because as native peoples some of us rely on our crops a lot. We use many of the things we plant in traditional uses, corn and chili are one of the main sources of traditional plants that we use. Personally, me and my family plant every summer because it plays an important role in our lives as native people to continue the tradition of agriculture that our people long ago were involved in, and losing our crops would not be a good thing.
