Jeanette Armstrong “Sharing One Skin” (Research Log 1)
Emery, Kendra. Sunset. October 05, 2020
In this article “Sharing One Skin”, it talks about Okanagans and how their community, culture, and relationships best describes others through the phrase of “our one skin”. To me, this article seems like people are tied to one another by a bond that is uniquely human. Jeannette Armstrong is a member of the traditional council of the Penticton Indian Band in British Columbia. Around her birth place there were two mountain ranges: the Cascades on one side, and the Selkirks on the other. The main river flows through their lands and has 4 tributaries which are: Kettle, Okanagan/ Smikamean, San Poil, and Methow. She describes the landscapes because it tells people what her responsibilities are and what her primary goal is. She wants to explore the ideas of what it is like as human beings, as individuals have life forces within their skin.

How place names impact the way we see landscape (Research Log 1)
Emery, Kendra. Sunset. October 10, 2022
In this article “How place names impact the way we see landscape” , it talks about the land of many indigenous tribes that have been named with the names of whites which cause the indigenous tribe to see the land differently, When indigenous tribe name a sacred land after a war leader or an ancestral name it then has meaning, which the indigenous tribe will make sure to share the meaning with the younger generation so the land is always respected upon arrivals. Many indigenous tribes struggle to name or to rename sacred land due to the lack of primary source that then usually causes complications. The changing of indigenous lands hurt the people especially because many of these lands have a special meaning of names and the indigenous people only want to give and keep their ancestral name for their lands. With the naming of indigenous lands by the white it impacts the youth and how they see the land, they youth are learning more of the non-ancestral names given to the indigenous tribe sacred lands.

Chemotherapy for Stage II Colon Cancer
Emery, Kendra. Weeds. January 09, 2022
After viewing this second article, “Chemotherapy for Stage 2 Colon Cancer '', states in the article that colon cancer is an area of controversy in medical oncology and is the chemotherapy that aims to eradicate a micrometastatic disease that has been presented at the time of surgery. Colon Cancer is a recommended range of treatment options from observations to chemotherapy with single-agent or combination regimens, depending on the presence or absence of high-risk features but poorly give out the nodes, bowel obstruction, localized perforation, and positive margins. Chemotherapy in stage 2 colon cancer, does develop many people to this stage because therefore people who develop this type of health problem do have a higher risk of being exposed to death and when it's at this stage many people do tend to take that risk in letting themselves go. However, multiple meta-analyses do have a statistically significant benefit in overall survival that was seen for those patients who received adjuvant chemotherapy; however, multiple meta-analyses and retrospective subgroup analyses have turned into questions on chemotherapy. Along with this research, I then discovered that chemotherapy is the best way to find out if you have cancer or not and what the specific treatments are.

Colon cancer
Emery, Kendra. Flower. June 24, 2021
After watching this short video, it expresses things about colon cancer and can start from drinking alcohol or eating red meat and cold meat. Some of the symptoms that can happen when experiencing colon cancer may be diarrhea, pain in your abdomen, blood in stool, and weight loss but these factors don’t go this far. There are some other signs that you can experience when having colon cancer and how to treat it. They talk about Colonoscopy and Sigmoidoscopy to see inside your colon to find colon cancer. If you were to have colon cancer you should take more tests and see how much it has spread. Spotting colon cancer when being over 45 you should perhaps get screened, have physical activity, eat fruits and vegetables daily, avoid processed and charred red meat, not smoke, avoid excess calories, and not drink alcohol. These are the things that were talked about in the short video.

Fit and healthy father diagnosed with stage four cancer reveals first warning signs
Emery, Kendra. Rock Climbing. July 21, 2022
In the first article I read, a parent is informed that he has stage four cancer. With a vaccine, he is attempting to preserve his life. He was identified as having a liver tumor from stage four colorectal cancer. He experienced a negative reaction to his chemotherapy treatment. In order to save his life he has to travel to Germany for dendritic cell therapy, where a vaccine is created for his immune system. The treatment in Germany was not cheap and there was only one injection.

6 Warning Signs of Colon Cancer
Emery, Kendra. Lake. October 02, 2022
In the last article I watched a video and it talks about the most common cancer in persons of all genders is colon cancer. It ranks as the third most common reason for cancer-related deaths in the US. Sometimes colon cancer can exist without any symptoms. Since colorectal cancer risk increases with age, screenings should begin around 45. Colon cancer can affect anyone, and early diagnosis saves lives. The six warning signs are: A change in bowel habits, Bloody stool, Unexplained anemia, Abdominal/pelvic pain or bloating, Unexplained weight loss, and Vomiting.

The first article "Japan's Shimadzu Corp. to commercialize new blood test to detect early-stage colon cancer" describes how Shimadzu Corp plans to sell a new design that makes colon cancer detection simpler. Shimadzu Corp is a Japanese company that will develop and market a new blood test to identify early-stage colon cancer. In 2019, the manufacturer of the equipment begins offering commercial screening services. In Japan, colon cancer is one of the most common causes of death and is diagnosed using a stool test, however the procedure is not highly reliable. By detecting eight different types of biomarkers in blood, it can do so with an accuracy of roughly 96%.

The second article "Community-Based Health Outreach Increases Chinese-American Colon Cancer Screening Rates" talks about the majority of those who speak languages other than English had a higher rate of colorectal cancer screening. Nonetheless, there is a low rate of colorectal cancer screening for Chinese Americans. The experimental group participated in two instructional sessions about colorectal cancer and the value of screening that were led by lay health workers and received two follow-up phone calls. Participants who had ever undergone screening increased by 14.4%, while those who were currently on their screening increased by 18.1%, according to the experimental group. Depending on the resources available, a method could be utilized to enhance cancer screening.

In the third article "Around the World: Important New Research Reveals Insights into Colorectal Cancer in West Africa" , it states that the patients at MSK, who closely resemble patients throughout the United States, were compared to colorectal cancer patients in Nigeria in terms of tumor genomes and other distinguishing characteristics. Significant differences existed. The average age of colorectal patients in Nigeria is lower than it is in America: early 50s as opposed to mid-60s. Furthermore, patients in Nigeria are typically identified at a later stage of the illness. When cancer is diagnosed, most people have stages 3 or 4. In Nigeria, there is also a lack of health insurance, so patients can only receive care that they can afford.
