What I learned and read about today was the four capacities of life. The understanding of these four capacities are important to everyone because it is the way we function and also the way we experience things and get through them. The first capacity is the physical self, the way a person sees you in their perspective of sight. The second capacity is emotional self and this means to have the ability to understand your emotions and how they affect a person. Another definition of emotional self is the connection to our larger selves ( Mind ) which is constantly with us. The third capacity is the thinking intellectual self. This means to have more thought in problems that require that little more thought. Like a teacher has to think really hard about how they are gonna give and teach the students the knowledge they need. The fourth capacity is the spirit self which is the authenticity of a person and is the purest form of a person.

The article that I am gonna be using for my research log 2 is from New York Times and the title of this article is “Can Students at Your School Talk Openly About Their Mental Health Issues?”
In this article I was able to understand why some students in High School are not as encouraged to openly talk about their mental health with others in school. There were two students who published an Op-Ed essay in the New York Times and this was The ages of the kids in highschool vary from 14 to 18 years old. The article also mentioned in a survey how 11 percent of adolescents are likely to have a depressive disorder by the age of 18. The National Comorbidity survey was how they got that information. The two students were a part of the highschool newspaper and wanted to share it with their peers but were shocked when the school administration would not allow them to publish the articles that tied to mental health.

This is the second article from the news source New York Times titled “Do You Think Anxiety Is A Problem Among Young People?” While reading the article I quickly noticed the title and automatically knew what it was talking about. The article is about anxiety among young people. Ages 13 to 17 and they also mentioned college students as well. They discuss and compare how there is a 38 percent chance that girls have an anxiety disorder. When talking about the college students they explained how depression is not a big deal but when it comes to anxiety there is an obvious sign that the students have more anxiety than depression. I read about a reporter that works with The Wall Street Journal who went to a University in Michigan and asked students about anxiety and one student mentioned how it all started in middle school and how she had to be on top of her class in order to get into the advanced classes which she then had the opportunity to get into college. Also read how technology has an impact on us and why we have anxiety. But in a quote it read “ But if social media can lead to anxiety, it also might help relieve it.” I think that they are talking about how it is a problem with people today with all the tech around us and how we can’t get away from it without feeling anxiety.

For my 3rd article I read “Behavior: Internet Use Tied To Depression in Youth” from the source of New York Times. The main information this article is trying to put out is spreading awareness on the use of the internet amongst youths and the impacts it has on them like the increase in depression. The way they got this information is by studying 1,000 highschoolers in Guangzhou. This study was to find out if internet use led to different moods in the students when exposed to extended time of internet use. Out of the 1,000 students about 94% of students were classified as normal internet users. Then a 6% was classified as moderately pathological or at severe risk for addiction. And after 9 months about 8.4% of those students developed mild to severe depression.

The article I am going to be using is gonna be about the current state of the issue of my topic. It’s titled “Thought Process” and it covers the different ways people process information through their thoughts. Like thinking of the ways they can answer the question they were just asked. One of the thought processes is the visual thinking process and this is where someone has a mind with detailed images. It talks about medicine and how someone can think about what the medicine is doing in their body. It talks about a woman named Temple Grandin and her ability to think in a way where she could picture what animals see in their perspective when she is in presence with the animal. There are 3 types of thinkers they talk about throughout the article and they are verbal thinkers, object thinkers, and spatial thinkers. These are the types of ways a person can think about things in their lives. The most common kind of thinker is the verbal thinker and this is where a person can take images in their head and compare it to other things.
For my second resource I am gonna be reading an article from Vibrant Life about emotions and how they impact your health on certain emotions you feel. The title is “How your emotions impact your health: science reveals that emotions can improve - or impair - your overall health. So how about your emotions: are they making you stronger or sicker?” I read about how being emotional can make you more vulnerable to cardiac disease and cancer. There was a Johns Hopkins study that was given in 2012 and it indicated that people who thought negatively were 2.6 times more likely to develop cancer and 4.5 times to die from injuries that require hospitalization. Seeking forgiveness was one of the things that led people to cancer and an increase of anxiety. Being sad or having emotions that make you feel bad will have an impact on your physical health and the result of this was that 100 million people had to pay for medical care which was 600 billion in sums over the entire year. Also being able to switch around and think positive thoughts will make a difference in avoiding negative emotions. Also creating positive emotions can impact your overall mental and physical health by keeping your mind off the negative thoughts and emotions. Another thing that they found that can improve your happiness is simply interacting with one another and making connections. The connections are important because they help you feel what needs to be felt like happiness and joy.
Action Plan 1
On March 3rd I participated in at the state capital here in Santa fe for the culmination of Mental Health Week and the lend my support for House Bill 112 sponsored by Pamela Herndon. I attended the celebration of this bill and got to witness a press conference where Mrs. Herndon gave testimony about this piece of legislation. The bill is about creating a pilot project to make wellness rooms for students in public high schools throughout New Mexico. While I was there I got to meet Mrs. Herndon and shared that SFIS has a “Heart Room” which is very affective and is something that is encouraged to have throughout schools in New Mexico. I also had the opportunity to hear a testimony from students from Eldorado High School which helped with the writing of the bill and they talked about how they have a room where students can go to a calming environment. The experience was valuable because I got to showcase that SFIS cares for other students in New Mexico needing emotional well being.
