"Sharing One's Skin"
Jeannette Armstrong
"sharing one's skin" is told by an Okanagan woman who talks about her tribe, and talks about her tribe's cultural practices in full detail. throughout the story, she includes her thoughts on her tradition, what her people's culture is about, and her perspective on the world. where she comes from has a big impact on how she sees life, she believes that native people are the "old earth" and that we are all connected to it in a way. she also explains that in a person there are 4 selves that make up a person. The physical, emotional, spiritual, and thinking-intellectual selves. she touches base on the meaning of "our one skin" in this she says that it is more than sharing a place of residence but also sharing a physical tie with your community and family. Sharing our flesh is more important than sharing the place of residence.

"How place names impact the way we see landscapes"
B. Toastie
"How place names impact the way we see landscapes" article is told from the point of view of a Navajo woman whose name is Laura Tohe, she has two names one Colonial and one Diné. She talks about how in her tradition as well as others you can't take the name of the dead since it's almost like holding them back from their journey to the afterlife but it's different from the way colonizers think because they give the name of the dead to historical places, doing this natives believe that it is just giving power to them although they are gone. The places where native people reside all have a story to tell because we all come from different backgrounds of cultures and all have different traditions, but all have one thing that connects us all; the earth.

"Drugs, Alcohol & Emotional Health"
While reading this article I read about how 1 in 8 American teens experience depression. Depression is a lot higher for the LGBTQ+ youth community amongst these teens 62% of them explained that they had experienced depressive symptoms during the year 2021. Many people that are suffering from depression refuse to seek help, but most people are able to overcome the intrusive thoughts and are able to go on with their lives. Depression involves both your body and your mind. Depression can be caused by the loss of a loved one, school, job, or rejection in life. Many people look for an easy way out of depression which consists of drinking or drugs. When doing drugs you have hopes to end depression but what they do is create more problems. People also turn to drugs to ease the burden of sexual abuse. The quote that I like in this article is “these “solutions'' only deepen their depression.” I like this quote because many people think that using drugs is a way out but in reality, it is just putting you deeper, not many people know this.
I chose this article because I can relate to some of the things that are being said in the article “Drugs, Alcohol & Emotional Health” growing up I had experienced firsthand what alcohol does to an individual and how it changes them, they think that it is a way from reality and believe that it is making them a better person but they don't notice what it is slowly doing to their body, mindset, and physical health. This connects with my SHP by showing the reasons why people choose to take and do drugs and informing others about the after-effects that the drugs could have when they are being used to calm down depressive thoughts. I also chose this article because it gives me as a person more information about prescription depressant pills that are being abused by young people. These pills are given to those who have sleeping, panic, and anxiety disorders.

"Suicide Data & Statistics (CDC)"
The Article that I read gave some important statistics on the suicide rate among teenagers, and adults. The first thing that I read in the Suicide data & Statistics was that bar graphs were shown to represent the suicide rates in 2020, and surprisingly the one that took the lead was the non-Hispanic Indian/ Alaska Native with a percentage of 23.9% out of a 100,000 rate. The number of suicide attempts by young adults came from girls more than boys. Young girls had a percentage of 11% and the boys were standing at 6.6%. Among that group of young girls and boys were non-Hispanic American Indian / Alaska Natives with 25.5%. Young adults account for 14% of all suicide deaths. The people who are most likely to have a higher suicide risk are the individuals that have past trauma and experienced sexual violence. The suicide rate is higher for people that identify as gay, bisexual, and lesbian. These high school students had attempted suicide in the last 12 months. Firearms are the most used weapon in suicide. The article states that “Every 11 minutes 1 person dies from suicide”.
I choose this article because it actually showed me the statistics of how much of a difference the suicide rates are between the other races. It also shows me which age group has the most suicidal thoughts and attempts. Another reason why I chose this topic is that it gave me some information that I didn’t even think about including in the research. This article gave me a deeper understanding of what the different causes are in people. Depression can develop in a child as young as 9 - 10. This surprises me because they have barely even experienced things in the world. Something that could cause a child to have depression is the trauma that is caused between their parents and sometimes the sexual violence that they may experience. As for adults, the article stated that “substance misuse, financial problems, and mental health are all liked to suicide in the individuals.

"PBS: Audio & Visual"
During the talk about mental health as featured by PBS Dr. Huey, Tony Card, and Dr. Rahman all talked about the signs of depression and anxiety in individuals, when you are most vulnerable, what to do or where to go when you need help, it was all connected to the Covid Pandemic. The opening topic that started the conversation was the quadruple rise of anxiety and depression in adults during Covid. Covid has created a new wave of loneliness epidemic. Anxiety and depression wasn’t the only thing that increased but also substance abuse, domestic violence, and crisis calls (based in LA). “The crisis calls had increased 8000% during Covid,” said Dr. Huey. The most vulnerable people tend to experience problems such as suddenly feeling depressed, and not enjoying things as before, the most vulnerable are people with pre-existing conditions of anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. The covid pandemic had also impacted children from developing a healthy lifestyle when they experienced depression and anxiety they became angry and irritable with everything happening around them.
My connection to this visual/audio was the way they talked about the drastic rise of depression and anxiety during the pandemic in children and adults, but mostly in adults. Also in this video, they stated that when the pandemic had it and everything was shut down many individuals who were recovering from anxiety and depression experienced relapse when they could not talk to their therapist face-to-face. When therapists saw this happening they recommended they seek treatment in group therapy or a community member health center. I found that the information that was talked about in the video was exactly what I was leaning toward in the example of giving ways to seek treatment, what the signs are, and what the rise of suicide and depression are in individuals during the pandemic.

The audio which I had chosen to write about was based on the stories that Kevin Briggs had told concerning his experiences on the Golden Gate Bridge. The Golden Gate Bridge was the hot spot where many citizens had committed suicide by jumping off the bridge and landing in the water going about 75 mph (miles per hour) “Over 1600 people have lept to their death from the bridge." shattering the bones of an individual, one of which he saved was a citizen of California who was planning to commit suicide on the bridge. He could have easily done this but Kevin Briggs had saved this person by just listening to him as he was about to jump. That individual then stepped away because Kevin had let him speak about his problems while he stood there for an hour and a half just listening. The man then Thanked him for listening since no one else would.
My connection with this Audio is that when Kevin Briggs was talking about how he just listened to the person on the bridge who saved a person's life. The connection that I see with this certain part of the video was that listening to someone can save a life and maybe even more if many people just do that more often without judging others. Listening to someone's problems while they talk can be one of the best solutions that are out there right besides talking to a therapist. When talking to someone whom you trust is one of the best things since you are more comfortable and open with that individual.

"Covid and Anxiety during the Pandemic"
According to the article “COVID Depression and Anxiety” during the pandemic, many were diagnosed with anxiety after being in ICU (Intensive Care Unit) for too long. Vannorsdall, who graduated with a Ph.D. degree also stated that “patients treated for COVID-19 have been living with anxiety and depression since before the pandemic.” This shows that the anxiety rates during the pandemic have risen dramatically whether the patient had anxiety before the pandemic or was admitted to the ICU or just if they have just developed it while being in the ICU.
The Connection that I have with this Article in particular is that during the time that covid was still at a high risk many people had gotten anxiety and depression over the years. This article explains that during the time many were in the hospital they had gotten severe cases of anxiety and depression from the lack of social interaction and may have also gotten PTSD from everything that was going on around them.

"The Importance of Mental Health Awareness"
I researched an article called “The Importance of Mental Health Awareness''. This article focused on the most common mental illnesses. The two biggest ones known are Anxiety Disorder and Mood Disorders these two are the biggest among all different Mental health conditions. Both Illnesses are just the surface of the topic below the surface are smaller illnesses that each hold their own issue. PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), OCD (Obsessive-compulsive Disorder), Panic Attacks, Depression, and Bipolar Depression are all smaller topics that are hidden in one big topic just like Anxiety Disorder and Mood Disorder. This shows that although we only see one topic that doesn't mean that it's a small topic but that it is just the surface of something bigger. This article in particular provides some ways an individual can help a person that is suffering from Mental Health. “Stigma and misinformation can feel like overwhelming obstacles for someone who is struggling with a mental health condition,” says Jean Holthaus as she states a few ways you as an individual can help another overcome a mental health condition.

Research Log 4
While I was reading the Article on Mental Health in South Korea I noticed that there are some pros and cons to living in the environment they are in. As stated in the article the cons to living in South Korea are the extreme work hours many adults face and also the insane amount of studying that children in high school do to get a higher education. Another con they have to struggle with is the old traditional values that many still live by today such as not being able to talk about their emotional health. The pros to this situation are the amount of support that the government and non-government organizations are trying to give to its citizens by bringing awareness to the problem and giving children a chance to live in a healthy environment mentally and physically. They are working towards solving this problem within the next 5 years.
My connection while reading this made me aware of how well the government in South Korea is trying to control the rates of Mental Health and Suicide. They care about the people so much that they plan to drop the suicide rate within 5 years by using the money, connections, and resources they are providing to individuals who are in need. I connected with this because I think that we need to care more about our Mental Health as Native communities living in today's world struggling with living in traditional and urban settings. I feel that we as a community need to be more aware and expressive of our feelings.

"Catholic Parish Apostolate Paints Bleak Picture Of Mental Health In Southern Africa, Against Victim Stigmatization"
As I was reading the article I learned that there are different rules for each religion. Just as in this article specifically it is a person's mental illness against the religion and the way people think and see the individual. This article made me think about how lucky we are to have to support that we are given because in Africa they are judged for having a mental illness. I enjoyed this article because the government in Africa is trying to have people acknowledge mental illness as a normal thing so that elders and others don't judge an individual by expressing themselves. I also liked that they are trying to make expressing one's emotions in a sense that they are normal to talk about.
My personal connection with this article is that as a Native person, I sort of know what they are going through with not being able to express what they are feeling not because people in my community will judge me but because we are not taught to express our feelings and emotions. Another personal connection that I have with this article is that I know from past experiences that if you don't seek help for your mental health it will only get worse, so it's better to be open rather than cautious about what you are going to say. I also like that they are trying to incorporate it as part of their parish activities.

"'We're in a Crisis': Pandemic puts new strain on Mental Health Services in Hawaii"
The video was mainly talking about how a woman named Eileen Lau-James had taken her husband, Clayton, who suffers from a severe mental illness. He had had a psychotic episode during a family outing. Eileen had taken him to a hospital but there weren’t enough inpatient psychiatric beds to admit him, due to this unfortunate lack of psychiatric beds together they had waited for a total of two days in the emergency room until a bed had opened up.
My personal connection with this is that when they were mentioning that the pandemic was causing many family members from being treated in hospital rooms with bedding. This was a personal connection because just as in Hawaii here in New Mexico the suicide rates had gone up because of the lack of support from hospitals able to give them the help that they need. This video was very informational because if I didn't watch and chosen to study Hawaii as a place that is dealing with mental illness I wouldn’t have found out that they had to wait for days just to get a room at a psychiatric facility. As a native person in New Mexico that is living in both a urban setting and a native setting I find it hard to control mental health on my own since I am constantly on the go leaving me no time to see a therapist or talk about my feelings.

Movie Therapy: How movies can help with Mental Illness
My Action Plan was presented on November 17, 2022. I had 6 dorm students attend my action plan, we watched the movie "Inside out" in the Humanities commons. I had posted my action plan details on social media along with the location so people could come if they wanted to. I chose to watch a movie as my action plan because during the pandemic watching movies was a way that I coped with my Mental Health and stress, so I wanted to see and prove that movies do help increase the stress levels in individuals and should also be seen as a way of coping.

Action Plan 2 - Relieving stress through a movie
My Action Plan was presented on February 28, 2023. I had a total of 10 people that had attended including myself and a chaperone. The individuals that I had taken had signed up because of the limited amount of spaces that I had. This all took place at the Regal Movie theater in Santa Fe, I took them to see the movie Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantamaina. I chose to show another movie for my second Action Plan because the feedback that I had gotten from the first action plan had shown me that watching movies does lower the stress in people that watch movies. Although this action plan was fun it took a lot of preparation with the school. I had to get various signatures, talk to the head person of the dorm, fill out a funding application, and also find a bus driver and a chaperone before the fund and plan could be approved.
