In the first article I chose it talks about how in many cultures, mental illness has been seen as a sort of judgment for sin or as a sign of demonic possession. Hippocrates lived in the fifth century b.c., and was a pioneer in the treatment of mental illness. Instead of using religious methods, he focused on adjusting the patient’s environment or occupation or by giving them medication. The mentally ill were thought to be possessed or in need of religion during the Middle Ages. The stigmatization of mental disease and the unsanitary isolation of mentally ill people resulted from consistently negative attitudes based on mental illness in the United States throughout the 18th century.
A movement towards deinstitutionalization and outpatient care started in several nations by the middle of the 1950s helped along by the introduction of a variety of antipsychotic medications. Based on the idea that mental health patients will receive better care in their communities than in “large, undifferentiated, and solitary mental hospitals''. In the United States, many severely mentally ill patients had been transferred from psych wards to community-based mental health homes or other similar facilities by the middles of the 1960s. There have been other studies showing positive outcomes from community-based mental health care programs. Other studies claim that among mentally ill individuals living in their communities, “loneliness, poverty, poor living conditions and poor physical health” are common. Many experts believe that the United States can improve treatment outcomes, increase access to mental health care, and improve the quality of life for those who are mentally ill by enhancing community-based programs and expanding inpatient care to meet the needs of patients who are severely metally ill.

The second article I chose mentions how the history of mental illness has been well-documented, and both historians and mental health specialists have enough proof of this. These cases deal with a variety of topics, such as alcoholism and anxiety. Before we had names or diagnosis for particular conditions, there were mental illnesses. Hysteria, shell shock, insanity, and in rare cases, demonic possession have all been used as labels for the disorders that we now know as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and bipolar disorder. When the 20th century arrived, society began to accept mental illness as a real disorder, and physicians began to treat these conditions. Patients with mental illnesses were frequently cast out in the middle ages and forced to fend for themselves.
People with mental problems experienced increasing discrimination over the centuries. These bad concepts turned tragic much too often.

The second article I chose mentions the unhealthy ways of coping with your mental health. An unhealthy way is avoiding problems and although it may seem like an easier approach to handle the troubles you are now facing, pushing your problems back will eventually find a way to come to the surface again, perhaps as a result of a trigger. Sleeping constantly can also be unhealthy and it’s similar to avoiding problems, this is another diversion that might seem more pleasant right now. Your body needs sleep, but it also needs to move about.
Over or under eating is one too. Anything either above or below the advised amount can result in serious health problems or illness. And finally the most popular one that people choose to avoid their problems, severe alcohol or drug use. The use of drugs and alcohol can lead to trouble. Although excessive use of stimulants and depressants can result in serious health problems, addiction, overdose, and even death. They can also help to dull feelings of pain and negative thoughts that are being purposefully avoided. Reverting to unhealthy coping techniques is straightforward since we do it automatically. The video mentions how people are processing their emotions. Sometimes emotions can be intense, scary, overwhelming and exhausting. The thinking part of our brains frequently becomes inactive when we are experiencing intense emotions. What binds us to one another is our capacity for joy and sorrow. Emotions can be a strong source of inspiration for taking action and participating in life. A way of processing emotions is by doing a “brain dump” meaning to frequently write down what you are thinking or about what’s going on. Or you could talk to someone who isn’t involved with what’s going on. There is another way where you track your feelings and take time to acknowledge how you’re feeling.
