At the beginning of the school year, I walked into the art room for the first time and was overwhelmed by all of the new supplies I would be able to use. When I signed up for the class, I had heard from many previous freshmen that foundations of art is one of the hardest classes. I was nervous about how much work I would have a night. I remember my first day of art class and thinking about how much fun it was. I was especially surprised to see a lot of my friends in that class. I immediately fell in love with art class and has been my favorite class all year. I don’t know why I was worried at the beginning of the year because I would gladly take this class again.

I had always known I was good at art but never had been prompted to make anything I liked or was interested in making, so art in middle school for me was a dreaded class. I remember the first big project we did was beautiful oops and I was so surprised with myself because that class really made me take more a creative focus towards that project. Throughout the year I continued to surprise myself in my abilities to progress with materials and mediums I had never used before. I found a lot of fun in the drawing portion of the class but struggled a little with the painting. I liked how I was able to pick up the new things we had to adapt to and apply them while meeting the criteria.

When I look back to where I was in middle school and how limited I was and where I am now, I feel so proud of myself for pushing and always trying my hardest. I am very happy with all of my projects this year. Before taking this class I would never be able to tell, or compare art, let alone talk about it with some sort of knowledge. I think that this class has made me better at analyzing art and comparing multiple things with depth and good reasoning. I like how when I look back on my projects, the ones that I spent the most time on came out exactly how I wanted them to. When I say that I am especially proud of my candy still life drawing. While in art class I would look at the upperclassmen art and wonder why it was so good, little did I know that one of my pieces of art would win in the same categories as the upperclassmen. That was one of the highlights of my year in foundations of art.

I enjoyed learning new techniques this year in art because I feel like they are skills I will be able to use in more than just art class. I am pleased to see my progress over the course of this year, it has changed me as an artist and as a person so much. I am excited to see what next year bring and what I can add to my collection of art knowledge. This year has been so much fun and I’m sad that I’m writing this the day before our last class, but I know that without this class freshman year wouldn’t have been so fun and memorable.

My favorite project that I did this year would be my self-portrait. Our first assignment was to make three time capsule drawings and one of them was a self-portrait. About halfway through the year, we were assigned to do just another self-portrait. I spent so much time matching the shades and shapes of my face and with my end product, you can really tell how much time was put into it. This piece of art alone shows so much growth and progression in half the year it made me excited to think about what it would be like at the end of the year, and now it’s here. Looking back on my first art project, I can’t begin to describe the difference in how much my art skills have advanced. I think it’s safe to say that foundations of art was my favorite class this year.
