Sustained Investigation #2

The idea that I wanted to portray in my work was the effect climate change is having on animals. Because the Ice caps are melting I wanted to use a polar bear and them put in on grass to emphasize that the ice caps are shrinking. And I added a picture frame to show that polar bears may not be around forever and that we need to capture them. This project relates to my life because I've always wanted to see a polar bear and it makes me sad that they may not be alive when I'm older.

First I sketched out the piece of grassland and then I sketched out the polar bear and tried to make it look like it was sitting on the edge. Then I used various colors of watercolor pencil to make the grass the water and the dirt on the side of the grassland. I went back in with felt tip pens to add texture because that is one of the elements I'm focusing on. After that I used white acrylic paint to make the polar bear. I used a light grey colored pencil to add texture to the polar bear.

I was originally going to do the whole thing in acrylic paint but I switched to water color because it dried faster and I was able to get everything on the paper that I wanted. I think that my project evolved when I started going back in and adding texture and darker and lighter colors. My next steps could be pushing the texture in the water and on the dirt to make it look a little bit more realistic.
